Do psychologists know anything? Psychologist Paul Bloom says yes-but not the things that you might think. Bloom discusses his book Psych with EconTalk’s Russ Roberts and what the field of psychology can teach us about human intelligence, consciousness, and unhelpful instincts. They also discuss just how far psychology is from a true understanding of the human mind, and why, according to Bloom, that might not be such a bad thing.

Regarding if psychologists are any happier, have better relationships, etc.. I wonder if psychology is the sciency/secular way of introspection similar to how mindfulness and psychedelics promise a secular way to transcend. Regarding how you wear different masks depending on the context, and therefore who is the real authentic you.. I like Slavoj Zizek and Sam Harris' on authentic subjectivity that there is no self, or authentic core to your being. Similar to Lacan's fundamental fantasy, which suggests there is no "you" that is detached from the world of appearances and performances and that the only mask is the story you try to convince yourself of, in order to rationalize the things you do in the world.
