I remember reading a Charlie Hayden interview in Downbeat. He talked about seeing Chambers live, talked to him after the show, and said he always looked like he was in tears. Chambers replied that he did cry during performing because the art form/music was so beautiful to him.

If you ask me, the thing that sets apart a player like Chambers is feel. No matter how fast or busy he is playing, each phrase or note has got incredible, swingin feel.

This is the first time I've ever seen a jazz bassist play an upright with a bow, fascinating!

Jimmy Garrison, Oscar Pettiford both did it a lot. Ron Carter and Mingus did it occasionally also.

It's so great to see a bassist use the full length of the fingerboard instead of heading straight for "thumb position".

Second-greatest. Jimmy Blanton is ahead of him. Not to slight Chambers at all, though. He's a legend for sure!

Interesting to think of PC’s arco playing as part of the Slam Stewart/Major Holley tradition - a kind of bop extension of that school (without the singing, of course).

On some live recordings, you actually DO hear chambers singing along with his solos!

Performers: Miles Davis leader trumpet, Bill Evans Piano, Paul Chambers double bass, Jimmy Cobb drums, John Coltrane t sax "School"/ style of Jazz: Modal Jazz Form: 32 bar Reason for Inclusion: Honestly, I don't like any of Miles Davis's music I've listened to so far. But that's not to say he isn't talented. If I had to pick something I like, I guess I could say I enjoy the dissonance on the Piano.

Piano player is Wynton Kelly. No sign of Miles.

What Paul Chambers, Cannonball and Miles did on Kind of Blue was amazing modal jazz. I don't see how it can't be appreciated. Although, don't get me wrong there's a lot Miles work that I don't like very much at all, but man, that album!!

I'm confused about the point of this comment. I guess it was to be of assistance, which is nice, but this isn't the album version (with Evans). Instead, it's Wynton Kelly on piano. Bill came in to do the recording session, but had been out of the band for a little while and replaced by Kelly (Bill was tired of touring). Both Kelly and Evans are on the Kind of Blue album.
