This programme, produced in 2003, shows Gazza at the end of his playing career, heading to the Gansu province in China's remote north-west to play for the local team. #gazza
A New Zealander here and someone who has struggled with mental health and alcoholism. Fortunate enough to see Gazza at Ibrox as a kid and still have his signature on the programme. A legend of the game and pleasure to watch on the field. Sorry your dad and “friends” weren’t better for you. Go well. We love ya.
we in SW England had a guest from Whangeri nr Auckland - a crazy biker called Max . I was surprised to discover he supported Man U but having found him in tears on our sofa one August morning in 2003 because the All Blacks had lost a WC semi final , to take his mind off the situation i suggested he come to watch our local Div 3 team AFC Bournemouth at home that afternoon. In 30 years of going to Dean Court ground I’d never had such a Hoot ( as he’d say) as this extremely drunk New Zealander entertained the thousand or so supporters in our stand after his discovering probably the only Australian in the entire place was sitting in the seats in front of us….he topped the game off with an impromptu Hakka upon a gravel mound in the car park to applause from B’mouth & Peterborough Utd supporters alike. Hang in there 😁👍
His manager and his dad are not the pals he thinks. Not sure about some of his mates either. Look like a bunch of freeloaders and not reliable support for Paul.
What type of father knowing his professional athlete son has a drink problem would accompany him on a flight across the world to a new & last professional job would not only drink champagne on the flight in front of him but go missing and turn up two weeks later with a bottle of whiskey!!! The presenter said his father would accompany Gaza anywhere around the world ........ more like sponge off him all oveer the world!!! As a father your job is to "watch and protect" your son from all his demons and vices, not add to them!! This is a man who Gazza idolised - What a total embarrassment of a father!!! Watch this interview with Freguson ru-vid.comz9w3aJawhYw
@@knikolas3145 Thats why his father should have been there to keep him on the straight & narrow - but he obviously choose to be a sell out and accept all his sons antics so he wouldnt get finanaically cut off!! But these are just my thoughts on the matter!!
The guy watched his best friend get knocked over and killed by a car and that had one of the biggest negative impacts on his life. So lucky to have had him play for my club and absolutely prove he was far from finished after his stint in Italy. I hope that one day he can find absolute peace and live as happy as possible. He has done some terrible things but he had obvious problems long before those incidents.
As a teenager who grew up watching Gazza play and someone who understands what it is to live with mental health problems. This documentary perfectly captures the impact of emotional dysregulation or ED which is a typical manifestation of many Mental Disorders. I have always been able to relate to Gazza. But it must have been horrible going through Bipolar Disorder and being hounded and harassed by the worlds and especially the English press 😡 Gazza was a genius with a ball at his feet! It was a privilege watching him take the field! A talent that will never be seen again. Equal to the old stars like Zidane. New players show flashes of Gazza like Bellingham. But there’s only one Paul Gascoigne!
I think the fact he isn't complex is the issue as otherwise he would know how to look after himself. He's just someone who craves fame and wants to go back to 1990 all the time
What a player and the England 🏴 fans love him to bits but clearly Paul has had issues since a child which I can relate and understand I wish him the best there will never be another Gazza
I cant help thinking how different this could of gone if it wasnt for his so called "Agent" his so called "Dad" and his so called "Best Friend". Such a shame. Amazing guy and a legendary figure in football.
We in the two island's love our underdogs and make them our hero's. Gaza and our black pearl Paul McGrath are cut from that cloth. Addiction and poor mental health are two symptoms. I don't know what comes first but I battle both. I know my condition is like their s only difference I wasn't in that kind of spotlight. I'm the same age come from simlar background and I live 15min from where Paul come from in Dublin.✌️☘️
Great, if tough watch. The dinky goal at 16:16 had everyone around beaming. Mad that a fella so sad could bring so much joy to those around him. Also that father's a muppet.
Sad to see what can become of people with their mental health, all you can wish for is they get the help they need and they learn to make the best of life. He is, IMHO, the most naturally talented English-born footballer in history, and would, at his best, have played into any world cup first 11 of any country in any era. That includes Brazil '70. Wish he'd signed for Man U instead of Spurs, he''d have had Sir Alex as a surrogate dad, and Sir Bobby as a surrogate uncle to take him fishing. Man U would've won the league a lot earlier and England might have had a captain they missed out on.
I understand you respect this bloke. Gazza and Diego are not the same thing. Never were, never was and never never. Its called World Class.......Gazza doesnt have that
Ah, panic attacks. Poor lad; I know how scary that shit can be when you don't really understand what's happening to you, when you're afraid that you're experiencing a heart attack or a stroke. I had my first one in my uni's library. I rushed into the shitter to try to gather myself. Then I remembered that Elvis died on the toilet. I didn't want peeps to find me that way so I got up, dried of the sweat as best I could, and went off to class. It was only five years later that I humbled myself enough to accept counselling and find a way to constructively deal with the problem. I didn't have addiction problems. I suspect that made it easier for me to solve my problem, so I have a tonne of sympathy for the lad who was managing a variety issues in addition to the panic and anxiety.
There’s no need to drink alcohol every single day. Stay healthy and restrict yourself to just 6 days a week and no more than 12 pints a day. I know it seems harsh but you will feel so much better !
Ah Gazza you absolute fucking legend ... Mental health and alcohol are right where I am now .... You were/are a unique talent with an amazing , brilliant personality and an honest heart.... If somebody invented a pill that could take the need for booze away I would bite their hand off but of course life aint that easy.... There was not a football fan in England that did not love you Gazza .. I mean "Shit" I even went North of the river to a Spurs game just to see your genius football at a game and it wasnt against "Palace"........ At one time (and probably still) the media enjoyed kicking people like you in the head when you were on your arse regardless of the impact or the outcome .... But hey it sells newspapers but at what cost...? I know you struggle "Sir" Paul but despite your battles and hardships there are a lot of people on your side out there..... Much Love ...G
I don't think the help was widely available in gazzas early years . Wasnt like you could Google stuff . Never heard of things like adhd etc when i was a kid you got labeled good or naughty . Same goes for a lot of things gazza now talks about that affe ts him , it wasnt just drink or drugs this goes way back before that . The only thing that didn't affect him was when he was playing football . I'm sure a lot can relate to that too . I absolutely love Paul ❤️ don't give up gazza keep trying that's all we can do x
An unbelievable player, unfortunately surrounded by freeloaders. A guy that happily spent his money and stayed oissed with him... the same guy that thinks he needs help.
Of course the alcolism caused all the anxiety, ocd, panic attacks, depression etc its what alcoholism does and mostly goes away when in recovery! I was in my teens when became physically dependent on alcohol and ne er knew what the shakes were and actually believed alcohol was stopping me going mad when it was needing alcohol making me shake and feeling full of fear of everything, i used to think god what would i do without this medocation alcohol! I know for a fact and every doctor will tell you that alcohol is the worst drug
He has had a lot of them problems from a kid though asnt he, panic attacks and OCD especially. It leads many to drink because they think it helps but then ends up making them problems worse. I suffer with OCD and heroin was the perfect drug as it turns your mind off or at least slows it down. The drugs and drink do bring these problems but it isn't necessarily the case the drugs or drink are first, it's often the other way around.
@@oddy532most addicts have OCD and anxiety, I definitely did as a kid long before drink and drugs it's the chicken or the egg thing if that's the right phrase that I hate when people say! You can go to deep and think about what caused the them problems in the first place!
@dondamon4669 haha ya know what mate I was going to use that phrase myself in my first reply. It does kind of sum the situation up perfectly though doesn't it, what comes first eh
There are many people, not famous or in any way in the public eye, who through strength of character, have done what is needed to recover and not look back. He plainly feels sorry for himself, none more so illustrated when over the images of his "beaten and battered" wife pictured on the pages with her injuries from his beatings, he says...I was in a bad place...blaming drink...who forced him to knock it all back...disgusting, that he could not admit anything, rather talk about himself...always. No sympathy here...he had it all and disdained all good advice, no doubt including from his previous clubs, who know how much help is needed...but you can take a horse to water...
Yeah that's likely, been there a few times. It takes about 20 years of hard drinking to start having problems withdrawing so that could have been the beginning of it at age 34.
An alcoholic can't go one day without drink, not even four hours without withdrawal, you are just talking about pissheads which is completely different to alcolism
