I definitely agree that Luka is definitely Top 3. Without question. He just needs to remain in shape the whole season and playoffs. Dude looked healthy and strong at the start of the season, but didn't keep that up throughout the season. But Jokic is a better defender at his position than Luka. He isn't an athletic center, but has quick hands and can compete physically. Luka is just slow and lazy on defense. He could be solid if he was more consistent.
Jokic substantially better than Luka defensively. Jokic never lacks effort or commitment on that end, rarely sleeps on assignments. He’s just a poor shot blocker. Luka legitimately doesn’t even try on defense at times, and falls asleep all the time.

Dude, JRUE holiday is a 4th option on the celtics, his load is miniscule, which is why he's able to put all the effort on defense. Luka is the #1 option, guarded tight every single possession, has 3-4 guys watching him like a hawk, and to top it all off, he's injured. Switch Luka Doncic and Jrue Holiday and Jrue holiday wouldn't even make the playoffs with the mavs team.

I’d agree but Curry really stepped up his defense as his career went on, he put on a lot of muscle and was always in great cardio shape. Obviously he benefited from having Dray and Klay (pre-injury) but calling Steph a bad defender became a bad take by ~2017.

Luka is definitely in the top 10, actually, he's in the top 5! I believe Luka can play good defense when he puts in the effort, but if he had more consistent help on the offensive end, it would definitely benefit him so he can put more effort on the defensive end. Also, in terms of conditioning, his fitness has been good throughout the whole season. This being his first time in the Finals, he's basically guarding Tatum and Brown for 40 minutes, and he has to score 30-40 points every game just to give his team a chance. That's tough for any star player. Can Luka be better? Of course! I just don't like everyone blaming him for the Mavericks losing when he was by far the most consistent and the best player in the Finals.

Listen to the podcast. To win you need defense (Celtics & last 2 champions were defense heavy teams). Dallas’ point was that even if ur literally #1 offensively, you can’t rank top 10 if you’re a traffic cone on the other side of the ball. That’s how important defense has become. Otherwise the other team will just spam the weakest matchup.

Luka is a very good defender when he actually plays defense and we’ve seen that in spurts. The problem is the Mavs’ offense is basically just giving him the ball and expecting him to create everything for everyone. There isn’t a player in the league who can do both for 44 minutes per game in a deep playoff run.
