I think it's awesome that he can still get excited over a stomp box and new fun tones. He still knows how to have fun in the midst of a crazy business. I think that's great and inspirational. Thanks Paul!
I love that glazed look that comes over his face when he goes into rain man mode. It's like watching a complete transformation from normal human to insane guitar god.
It's a fantastic Flanger. My favorite is the A/DA, and this has those sounds plus a bunch more. It sounds great in front of the amp, in fact that's recommended. If it's in the loop and you hit takeoff, your ears will explode. It's got a great chorus too. I have a collection of Flangers, Phasers & Vibes. This is the best Flanger currently for sale that I have found, the price was right too.
It sounds ten times better in person. Trust me. I thought that the final version had a smaller octave range on the take off side when i heard it on this video. But at the sessions in Hollywood, he demoed it for us and it is just amazing. So much range. Sounds just like the old ADA flanger. Maybe even cleaner.
This the best flanger to come out in a long time. It's meant to go in front of the amp. There's a lot of different sounds in it. I have no use for the take off section. I still keep a A/DA Flanger in the effects loop. It's the best one I have ever heard. But for $150, the AF2 is a great box.
@geetahplayer I'm a Vintage Modern owner and those heads definitely are NOT VM's. I believe they are both from the handwired series- the top is a 2061x Head, the bottom is a 1959HW, and the combo underneath them is the Vintage Modern.
Sounsa cool. What I really want to know is how well it works on bass. Seems like it would sound well, but how's the bass response? will I loose all my low end?
I have a probably lame question. I'm a big PG fan, but not so much into pedals. Im a minimalist, and I only buy basic stuff like overdrive and delay. But how does he make that noise at :09? He does it a few times throughout the video as well. Is this the flanger in take off mode?
that cat is the luckiest cat in the universe! when other cats of the world are saying "pat me" or "feed me" to there owners, this cat says to paul "its shred time" and gets treated to a buffet of tasteful arpeggios!
It is A flanger in the equivalent of take off mode. I don't think he had this pedal when making this song. The one he probably used in the song was broken in tour, so this was made. It is pretty much take-off mode.
I really like Paul Gilbert even though I'm not that into shred. It's just his whole attitude. For one thing, he's not one of these guys that has a giant ego. He's very modest in the way talks, looks, and just his whole demeanor. He's also just really passionate about his music and about his sound, which is essential to any great artist I believe. Lastly, he's not a sell out. Every signature item is something he actually treasures. Not like Slash who has just a billion signature everythings.
I'm in Australia, so they jack up the price to like $250. I thought this pedal would have costed like $500 but yeah. I've got it now, it sounds great and I love it. xD
Used to have a Pearl Flanger that made everything from scary monsters to eagle screeches and airplane sounds.... don't believe Pearl pedals are available anymore (?) don't think I would like it if it didn't have the capability of subtle settings as well as intense settings.... love Paul Gilbert's playing here
I have to amend my original comments. I have compared the AF2 with an A/DA. The A/ DA sounds richer, warmer. The odd/even harmonic switch is handy for matching it up to other effects. The AF2 is much brighter (brasher maybe?) They both do a good job.
1:03 Paul's got his shirt on backwards and is probably just waiting for people to notice :D FUN FACT: On the music video of Mr. Big's Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy, Paul put in 6 low E-strings on his guitar. He also played left handed on the official video of Mr. Big's Stay Together. He's a funny fella!
They won't ship it outside America (even though they normally ship to Canada, where I live). For whatever reason we have to wait at least another 6 months for it :(
