I'm seriously reminiscent of my youth in Japan,,,,(I grew up there, but moved to the USA decades ago ),,,Longing for those foods, especially those breads, in particular, Anpan, the one w/ the sweet crashed beans inside, is the most popular in Japan!! I used to have eaten it a lot btw meals in my childhood as well as my young adulthood, but it is unavailable here in the USA. This food doc. also makes me feel so ravenously hungry that my mouth is now inundated w/ the surge of my copious saliva plunging straight down into my stomach like that of the Niagara Falls!?. Gotta visit Tokyo before getting too old again!!!,,,, Enjoyed & appreciated it to the core of my bone & my soul!!,,,,Thanks to all concerned ( Btw, now I'm aware of who Paul Hollywood is,,,didn't know who he was until now,,,visited London about 2 decades ago & I loved it.),,,,From the USA,,,,,(12/08/22)

Just a note: It's Edokko (child of Edo, the old name for Tokyo) not Eddoku. And it does not mean Tokyoite. It's not the same as a New Yorker, you're not an Eddoko just because you moved to Tokyo from LA. It's actually very specific. Traditionally, to be an Edokko a person has to be at least 3rd generation on both sides. The term comes from 18th-century Edo-period Japan and nowadays no one takes it that seriously. However, there is still talk about "kissui (real, authentic, pure) no Edokko". Generally, today, if your parents were both born and raised in Tokyo then some Japanese might call you an Edokko. Nevertheless, a "kissui no Edokko" person might have a harsh word or two with you if you start calling everyone in Tokyo an Edokko ;-) There are actually several characteristics associated with Edokko such as they are prideful, quick to anger, lone wolf characters, but on the other hand, are generous with their money, witty but not argumentative, and passionate and easily moved to tears. Of course, these are generalizations and are more literary than literal. They probably come from colorful descriptions of the economically less advantaged common working-class people of Edo (old Tokyo under the Shogunate government). P.S. Started watching and saw the mistake and couldn't resist. Please forgive me for being nitpicky. I live in Tokyo (not an Edokko) and speak Japanese so it kind of stood out to me. Gonna watch the rest as I'm a sucker for food shows on Japan (even though I live here) hosted by non-Japanese. And Paul Hollywood seems like a load of fun. Though I've only ever seen a bit of the Great British Bake Off.

This is a great video. Because it introduces the stores in the department store. Many foreigners who come to Japan are introduced to sweets and bento boxes from convenience stores, but the truly delicious foods are the sweets, bento boxes, and foods from long-established stores in Japanese department stores. Yes, they are expensive, like wagyu beef and melons, but they are grown and bred by top farmers and are very elaborate. In addition, Japanese department store buyers are connoisseurs, and they source the best ingredients and products from all 47 prefectures of Japan, although they can get the best products from anywhere in the world. We encourage top-notch foreigners to experience the best of Japan's finest at these slightly higher prices. In fact, for as little as 2,000 yen, you can have a boxed lunch from a great restaurant, and there are also great confections sold in bulk for about 200 yen each. In addition to Japanese confectionaries, there are many products that are originally Western, such as Western-style confectionaries and breads, that are much tastier with Japanese-style innovations.

I am sorry, but Paul trying to peek around the booths at Ichiran like he was on an alien planet was a bit rude. I mean, clearly the point is that people (not just women as he seemed to suggest) can want a little privacy to enjoy their bowl. Taking a break from work, quiet time. I am all for social family style dining, but clearly the Ichiran concept allows people to have a bit of a moment alone with their meal during a hectic day. They do have other tables if you are with others, and the booths can separate if you with a partner. He also missed out on the ramen egg, oh dear.

@mikaneko1
@mikaneko1 Год назад
