Phillip Adams interviews Paul Keating for half an hour in 1999, on the ABC TV show “2-Shot”, three years after Keating’s 1996 defeat by John Howard. This is a reflective discussion on a range of topics, including the rewards and price of public life, putting political power to use, “Fixers, Straight Men or Maddies”, intellectualism vs action, the treatment of former PMs, family, life after politics, Catholicism, taste, beauty, Aboriginal Australia (Mabo), “Lovers and Others”, detail vs big picture, music (Mahler)… This is seemingly previously lost footage, recently digitised from an old VHS recording, which reminds us of the changed direction of Australian politics since the election of John Howard in 1996.

Thanks. We certainly have less politicians capable of engaging in in-depth conversations these days... let alone crap media.

What's not to love.."I don't believe in pathetic little badges". How did we get from Keating to Morrison? The people have no imagination, and the average voter is ...well average and mediocre. Morrison is a reflection of who we REALLY are. Not, 'fair go' or 'mate ship', but selfishness, small-mindedness, cruelty and meanness.

Morrison and the political will that got him and on down to Abbott elected perfectly fits the bill for what Donald Horne was lamenting in The Lucky Country in the '60s, Wikipedia: Horne's intent in writing the book was to portray Australia's climb to power and wealth based almost entirely on luck rather than the strength of its political or economic system, which Horne believed was "second rate". In addition to political and economic weaknesses, he also lamented on the lack of innovation and ambition, as well as a philistinism in the absence of art, among the Australian population, viewed by Horne as being complacent and indifferent to intellectual matters. He also commented on matters relating to Australian puritanism, as well as conservatism...

Adams' prediction about Keating's legacy was spot-on. I was going through high school almost 20 years after Keating left office, and his name was barely spoken of outside of a section on Mabo. Same deal with Whitlam and Wave Hill, Hawke and Tiananmen Square, Rudd and the Apology.

Nonsense. Whitlam just known for Wave Hill? Hawke just known for Tiananmen Square. Keating legacy was niche so Adams May be right on that but anyone who knows history won’t sell short Labor’s upper echelon PMs.

Legacies aren't always restricted to the things that are actually talked about regularly, are they? The main legacy of Hawke/Keating are surely the economic reforms. It's a bit like how the majority of people probably can't name the inventors of various things we use in our everyday lives. That doesn't subtract from their practical legacy.

We haven’t had a leader since Keating. Just a series of managers. Or dodgy stepfathers. Nothing replaces the real thing.

I love paul keating i so wish he was re elected in 1996 but even if he didn't won another term he should've stay on as opposition leader he probably would have beaten john howard in the 1998 election

If only he'd left Downer standing in opposition, instead of excoriating him and having Howard sleaze in instead, he could've played Toltoy with Downer for years...
