thanks 4 the video my friend; keres ; the strong player, the genius that along with victor korchnoi 4 some mysterious reasons never became world champions; but whose games along with capablaca's and nimzowitsch are among the most instructives

Keres' book "Road to the Top" is one of the most instructional Chess books you'll ever encounter. I prefer his style to almost anyone because he could do it all. He played positional, he attacked, he defended... he beat everyone! What more can you ask from a player? Other than being crowned World Champion, he did it all.

Yes, the World Champion part of the puzzle. I hope someone takes the time to machine analyze his loosing games against the Soviet champions vs his loosing games against other players. I'm not an expert on best moves, but I saw an online game the other day--I think it was Keres vs Petrosian. I think. But it sure didn't look like a typical Paul Keres game. He may not have held the title, but in my mind, he's every bit as good as the guys that did. I'll continue to hold that view until proven otherwise. And thanks Mato for running this series. It means a lot that there are still people that remember this great chess player. And BTW, Petrosian is also one of my favorite players. His moves are so logical. You can learn a lot about positional chess by studying the Iron Tiger.

Both of these guys are great players. Can't choose between them. Tal so full of energy. Keres so smooth. No crown for Keres? He got the crown of glory. In our hearts, we know he's the champ. And Tal: he's our adventurous little brother, the guy you love even if he loses, the guy that's not afraid of taking chances. Thanks for posting, Mato.

First I was like, Wow Tal is one of my favorite players he is one who risks and wins, but when I saw a game where Keres played:' I'd never saw such forcing defensive moves and strong moves, I was immediately astonished by his precise playing. Tal had no chance because of that. Keres was the perfect opponent for Tal in my opinion (in this game) and for some others too. I am looking forward to see more games from Keres, also I m feeling like I am approving my chess a lot just by watching Keres' games. Thank you Mato

Well played Mato. Well played. Since the last month of being subscribed, everytime the winning player is at the bottom. It is helpful to maybe recognise patterns in your own play, but also detrimental as it's easier to predict who is going to win and thus takes a little bit of the excitement out of it. All the people started complaining about all these Keres games, and I was more confused. I also thought he maybe wasn't as strong as other people thought, and this game vs. Tal, also with Tal's "perspective" I thought to myself: Mhm...so this verifies all the complaints of the viewers? But then: Boom! Caught me off guard. I respect you for that. Excellent game, and I might watch all these Keres videos again to help with my attacking game. Again, well played Mato ^^

I have greatly enjoyed these Keres games. Where I live, in Vancouver, Canada, the Paul Keres Memorial is the biggest tournament of the year, so of course his name is very well known in chess circles here. I knew the story that Keres died just after winning a tournament in Vancouver, which is why we honour his name and memory, but I had never seen many of his games. Thank you for allowing me that pleasure.

You never know what does he think or see...But actually l can't remember him in such a hopless position like this. He threw the towel too soon. He wasn't in mood, maybe. But, don't ever underestimate Keres anyway.

I am joking and being sarcastic and Mato is right Tal is a crappy role model as he does not make true sacrifices , he makes Poker Chess Sacrifices and takes a gamble and prays to father time that his opponent cannot spot the way out and die, Keres wants to play chess not poker and whoever pokes Keres gets crushed.

I think Keres, Tal and Fischer made an awesome trinity during what was the golden age of chess. Keres had a very precise game in complicate positions, thus being able to defeat Tal most of the times. Tal was a master of the I-mindfuck-you chess style, putting Fischer in the only kind of positions he wasn't great in: complicated ones, impossible to predict and not possible to have total control over. Fischer was the best of the three, according to Tal's and Keres opinions. Even tough he had negative score against Tal, he judged Fischer the best genius of chess in history. Keres said that Fischer had noone to fear in the endgame. Personally, Tal might not be the best of all time (Kasparov), or the strongest of his time (Fischer), but while I can admire a perfect play by Capablanca or Karpov, seeing Tal refusing draws while being 3 pawns down and winning by absurd triple sacrifices makes me love him and the game. He makes a game of chess an amazing moment of sport. Finally and just to clarify, Kasparov is the most skilled player in chess history (I don't know about the last years, maybe he might be outdone). But as himself says, making comparison with past GMs is unfair as they had less knowledge since the start. The only true comparison is the distance between the best player and the opposition in a certain period of time, and again as he himself says Fischer is the best ever judging from this point of view. He said this after Fischer insulted him many times calling him a crook winning fixed matches.

Hi Mato. My daughter and I continue to adore your videos. Thank you for doing them! Please keep up the great work you're doing. Keres has become one of our favorites, along with the magnificent Tal. From what I've been reading, it seems the only thing that stopped Keres becoming world champion was World War 2. I feel Keres would have beaten Alekhine at in the late thrities/early forties. Or certainly would have had a great chance. After World War 2, it seems to me that Keres wasn't as strong under Soviet control. Ian and katy

Some excellent players never made it to the ultimate top: Zukertort, Tartakower, Tarrasch, Nimzowitsch, Rubinstein and in later years Keres, Bronstein & Geller but in my view they all could have been champions, if ... They all played amazing chess, much better then Carlsen & Giri, eg as today's play is seemingly by old men shoving for a draw. Hoping for better times & thanking Mato for "keeping the memory Alive"" I reside with kind regards

Tal became a much sounder player as he got older. He had 2 very long undefeated streaks, one I believe in the early 1970s. One of those streaks was over 90 games. It is not possible to remain undefeated for so many games if one is playing unsound chess. Tal took more chances than most other players over the course of his career but Tal was also a very strong player. Wikipedia --- "From July 1972 to April 1973, Tal played a record 86 consecutive games without a loss (47 wins and 39 draws). Between 23 October 1973 and 16 October 1974, he played 95 consecutive games without a loss (46 wins and 49 draws), shattering his previous record. These are the two longest unbeaten streaks in modern chess history"

Judging by a comment Mato made on another video about people complaining about Keres, bear in mind that almost every chess legend would play exclusively against the board, not against the opponent. It is worth mentioning [I believe] that in the incredible Bobby Fischer book, My 60 Memorable Games, Paul Keres was included 4 times [Keres have 3 losses and a draw to Fischer]! What do I think of this game?!? Against accurate defenders Tal's talents could come unstuck, and Keres was one of those good defenders. Tal enjoyed a creative attacking game, in which he was often successful, and played too much sometimes in the fanciful blitz style that would work better against lesser opponents, and for which he was rightfully famous. I think he just loved that style of play. And just couldn't bring himself to be boring!

Another great game & video, though the opening could have used more analysis.

So brilliant ! I am amazed and wondering about Paul Keres ,why his carrier in chess was relatively short without becoming a world champion ?! Did he ever beat Fischer ?! I imagin Keres better than Spasky facing Fischer in that famous championship when Spasky -USSR lost to Fischer-US !
