It's May 22nd 2024! Who is still listening? I am that's who! Kossoff was an excellent guitar player! In fact the whole band was excellent! 👌👍❤️🙏❤️🎶🌎✌️🌹💫❤️❤️❤️
MrSmokeydog yes I just wrote a comment similar his vibrato wow. That’s what I love about the idea of band with instruments and not just some guy recording mumbling with brain fried tempos.
That`s what I keep saying for 50 years now: there may be better guitar players out there, but nobody touches my soul so gently like Koss with his tunes.
lucky enough to have a copy of back street crawler signed and presented to me by pauls dad david, after helping him with his one man show "the late great paul" the most soulful guitarist in the world,RIP paul and david
Great singer, great guitarist, two pauls ... so many emotions, I know and love them for more than 40 years. They are part of me, of my life, I can't help, heroes of my youth ... and still there at the same level: pure gold ... I'm melting away, flying high and feeling desperately FREE ... being your friend forever !!!! Lionheart ;)))
Used to spend every weekend, fridays & saturdays listening to bands like this. Every weekend there would be a couple of quality bands playing in town that you could go see for 50-75p!!! Honest. God how lucky we were without ever realising it to witness real music being made and played. How great was that atmosphere in the dark, smoky clubs and pubs where we watched in awe some of the greatest musicians of their time. You really couldn't explain to anyone today just how great it was back then.
Paul had the best vibrato of all time. He REALLY knew how to express himself on that beautiful sounding Les Paul! He wasn't the fastest soloist, nor the most technical, but his feel and sometimes aggression on guitar are unmatched! One of the best of all time and I salute thee! Thank You for the memories and Rest in Peace Paul! Still missing you!
Just brilliant totally BRILLIANT! I saw Free play in Sunderland & Newcastle City Hall (which has great accoustics) people 4get how amazing kossoff was his sound was unique, so so sorrowful he died so young, think what he wud have been like now. Also R.I.P. to th great Andy Frazer who died last yr or 2018, an Ace of Bass was andy, it was his bass that made Free instantly recognisable. Gone to jam wth Kossoff in that great superband in th sky
Paul was a classicaly trained guitarist, dont think he couldnt play! he chose to play the way he did not through lack of technical ability, it was his MUSICAL choice
A grey day turns my mind away To places past and gone Broken hearted dreams I’ve seen Broken hearted dreams I’ve dreamed But there’s a big low song Keeps a pushing me along Day by day On and on And there’s a sound like molten gold Keeps a burning to my soul To my soul A grey day thoughts of yesterday To faces past and gone Sounds to me like I should be Oh I should be on my way... Lyrics by Paul Kossoff
Its bull shit that without dope musicians arent as effective or artistic or expressive as they would be if they were loaded....BULL SHIT!!.... Koss is a perfect example. His playing withered away as his addiction took over his humanity.... You could actually see it in his eyes...Its heartbreaking..RIP...Tommy Bolin was another perfect example... RIP... Its the big lie of artists that their expressiveness and creativity are sooooooo much more "in tune" when high.... pppffffff..... Drugs have killed so many people....Its a cryin shame...
Never saw Koss...saw Tommy twice...the 1st time he was high...the 2nd time he was not (but gone a month later)...you don't need to guess which show was better (tho' he was - like many players could be - quite good stoned out of his head...you could not take all of it away).
so tastefull, so sweet, this was a really great group trough the many I've heard in my life, they have a special place in my hart. they sounded really FREE!!!!!!! claudio
I think that Jess Roden sung on most of that album (back Street), but Rodgers sung on this one particular track. I will pull out my copy of the album and report a complete picture when I get the time. The attic is full~!!
thanks for uploading this. For Andy Fraser fans , please note he is playing at The Annual Free Convention on 2,.8.2013 please contact freeconvention@aol.com for details. also playing on stage at the Convention we have the nearest you will find to a modern day 'Koss' who plays all the original chord and vibrato of many Free songs as near perfect as you can witness . The question is which of Free Tracks will Andy be playing live on stage ? Thank you for allowing me to post this here
I saw them at Wellington College..with High Tide, and East of Eden, and Hawkwind;it does not come much better,I can assure you! Oh yes, there was Edgar Broughton, too! Pots.
there's another version of this with Terry Slesser(I think?) on vocals I think which is much better, there's an amazing bit of feedback sustain just after the middle section. it's on the 'koss' compilation...
Cool I know the gig you are on about. Simon Kirke has a Wellington College connection. SHorty after that gig they (Back Street Crawler) the band were due to play in Hyde Park with the likes of Broughton,Kevin Ayers, and a bunch of other greats, sadley Paul died on the plane back from the states. I remember "OUT DEMONS OUT" though. Edgar Broughton our Welsh cousins were magic.

it doesn't matter how old you are my friend.i love seeing young people that like this music.paul kossoff is a favorite of mine as well.have you checked out mike bloomfield ???
The name is Molten Gold. # Paul Kossoff (guitar) # Paul Rodgers (lead vocals) # Jess Roden (harmony vocals) # Andy Fraser (bass guitar) # Simon Kirke (drums) # Rabbit (organ, chimes, piano)
This song is originally on Paul Kossoff's solo album named Backstreet Crawler not to be confused with the band Backstreet Crawler (Kossoff was a member). It is frequently confused as Free because it is on some Free anthologies and because Paul Rodgers is the lead vocalist on this track. I'm not sure but I do not think that Andy Fraser or Simon Kirke play on the track. I could be mistake though.
This was originally recorded for Free At Last , then shelved. So it’s essentially Free with the Jess Roden backing vocals recorded later whilst Kossoff was making his solo album Back Street Crawler.
Let me just put on my kevlar vest and say I like the BSC version over this one The solo is so much better Don‘t get me wrong, I love this album but that solo just gets me every time
@Ishbell1 i to have the back street crawler album and i would never part with it great album never be the likes of koss again pure genius on guitar r. i. p his music will live on
The world's most soulful notes, and vibrato. It was all about soul with Koss. He was so real, and dealing with a fake superficial business that he imploded. Sad, but inevitable. No offence to JR, but this mix would have been better without Jess Roden singing the low parts.
Free are my all time favourite band of all time. Koss' guitar work, although not as technical as some, is pure emotion, and indeed molton gold. i wish i was born earlier so i could have seen the original free, instead of being doomed to be tormented with generic 'sing in a regional accent' indie bands. this band will never be topped
Bullshit. Paul Kossoff was a natural, gifted talent. Every bit of live concert footage out there, at least from Free's early performances, shows Paul in a completely lucid state, with full control of his faculties, feeling every note he played. If they were on anything for these shows, I would guess maybe a bit of weed is all, which lots of us did back then. To attribute any of his ability on the guitar to drugs is just crap. It breaks my heart that drugs destroyed his ability to play, then ultimately took his life. Nothing to joke about. :'(
@@thirdday07 Yes he was very talented & was trained in classical guitar. Unfortunately drugs were part of his life (pills) from a very early age. His father talks about it in the tour that he did called 'The late great Paul'. It is now on youtube & very interesting & also very sad. The book Heavy load is also a good read for Free fans.
