Barbara Frum was the kind of conservative Canadian woman who always rubbed me the wrong way. Her children are no better. David Frum, Republican writing hack for George W. and now desperately trying to save his sickening party from a bigger evil, namely Drumpf. Her daughter wrote very catty annual articles about universities in Canada. She was widely disliked because of that. Trying to be controversial in a 1980's way.

And she interrupted him at least once, but I believe a couple of times. I find it annoying not because it's considered rude, but because at one point he was going on about something I found really interesting, and she stopped him in his tracks and we never heard the rest.

Fully agree with you. Paui's contribution to the Beatles was MONUMENTAL, as was John's. Lennon was more insecure, given his tough childhood and was always more likely to criticize the other Beatles to show he was assertive. Paul was, according to most girls, the cutest. Good to know that Yoko told him how much John admired him. We are all very lucky that they were able to collaborate for a decade.

I don't think being pleasant is necessarily a trait of a nice guy. John was more genuine, you just see more of the 'bad' traits because he didn't cover it up.

+whiteshadow59 Paul was and is a nice guy. But Paul was/is not a pushover just because he's polite and has manners. Paul has a spine of steel that he aquired early in his childhood after his mother died. He was only 14. John appeared to be and extrovert, devil may care, tough guy, but it was just an act to hide his insecurities. John seem to latch on to all the father figure types until they died or let him down by not being whatever he thought they needed to be for him. Like Brian Epstein, Magic Alex, Maharishi, Allen Klein and finally Yoko as Mother, hoping to cede responsibility of his life to them. Confused frightened "inner child" was more the real John Lennon. All consuming fame and adulation of Beatlemania, could threaten the sanity of anybody and it took it's toll on the Fab Four. They all came to hate it but Paul and Ringo were the ones who managed live with it better than John and George. Paul learned to deal with it by keeping his core self retained, somewhat at a distance. That helped him keep his sanity. John who already had emotional issues, who always felt that he needed to be "real" and "on" voicing his opinions on everything let fan adulation rush over and nearly drown him. He hated it and the expectations that came with it, but didn't know how to shield himself from it because the rebellious tough guy was an act. That's why Yoko became his shield to hide behind. Lennon lost his creative and artistic muse for 5 years. Paul never did.

+Water Falls I like your psychological interpretation of John and Paul. Wish there were more comments with the analytical insight of yours. However, I think that to some extent Paul also lost creativity from 1970 - 1973 after the Beatles breakup. Partly because he was trying to move away from Beatles material, creating, shaping up, and leading a new band (Wings). Partly because he was dealing with the business side of a new band (and the fact that Beatles assets had been put in receivership, so none of the 4 could get access to them until they - the assets - were legally released). Partly because of fame and celebrity stuff (including the attacks from John). And last but not least, marriage and children (which Paul put first). Just my 2 cents. Thank you.

John Miller I bumped into Paul McCartney 2 weeks ago on Penny Lane.He was filming a carpool episode with a English comedian James corden.That's twice I've bumped into him now..

Count Wolfula but John's attacks, constant malicious attacks, fed media, critics, and a.c.t.u.a.l.l.y hurt Paul in people's minds. That's wicked. He could have retracted and apologized biblically, but he never did. John was just a weaker talent and man than Paul and the other lads.

@@laco4275 some of what you say may have been true, but I was there living through it, and we never saw the intensity of the feud. The Allen Klein and Phil Spector and all the attorneys representing everyone made it a circus. I never felt that in Paul's music. He turned to Linda and his growing family....she was a tough woman and he knew it. But she was kind. Think of "Maybe I'm Amazed" was written during all that. John was hurt too....and there was not a contest in that department. He just showed it differently....as he always did.

La Co it hurt paul’s feelings yes i actually think john was annoying at that (and my fav is john) but have you seen that paul interview where he said sometimes he questioned his relationship with john just because hes been seeing so many articles and tv stuff and so many people criticizing the realness of their relationship without actually knowing the truth? paul said he had to sit back and think about him and john only to realize that YES, no matter how many fights they had and no matter what anyone says about what happened, they were best friends and will always be each other’s bestest mates. And youre like those people you know, how can you say john never apologized? We will never know. And to be honest i think he did because paul always said they reconciled before his death. Also there are quite a few evident songs that i think john wrote with paul definitely in mind. Example is one his last songs, Just Like Starting Over....looking at the lyrics i really believed he was talking about paul at that, especially he even referenced Wings and paul’s songs like Oh! Darling, Another Day, and My Love

All four of The Beatles did some great work in their solo years. Wings was a good experience for Paul. His status as a former Beatle got him nothing in Wings' early days. They literally had to start at the bottom and work their way up, often offering to play for free at various universities. This made them hungry for success, which made them work harder, which increased the quality of the music. Adversity helps make for good art.

She meant now that John is dead. The idea being that Yoko knew John so well as to see past his habitual bluster. McCartney often says that he and Lennon were talking regularly on the phone just before he died. Well, maybe. But if you read Lennon's 'Playboy' interview given just a couple of months before his death you see that there's still quite a bit of hostility there.

When John was with her, he had to constantly slag Paul publicly. Yoko required it to prove that John loved no one more than her. When he was away from Yoko's sphere of influence, he openly loved and admired Paul again, and even wanted to work with Paul again during the so-called Long Weekend. Back with Yoko, back to knocking Paul. The Playboy interview shows that within earshot of Yoko, he slagged Paul...again. But rebuked her when SHE tried to do it by mocking her saying, "You're still carrying that cross? That was years ago!" In other words, "STFU about Paul! Only I can slag him!"

+Bill Bass exactly. there is that legendary story was that paul and linda visited john and yoko at the dakota in 1976 where they were just being cool and later that night was that famous episode of "saturday night live" where lorne michaels offered the band $5000 to reunite and sing five songs. john and paul were watching and almost went to snl studios but they were too tired.

There's an interview with John when he was in L.A. during his separation from Yoko. He was asked if The Beatles would get back together. John said (paraphrasing), "If I think of it tomorrow, yes." I think John sunk so much of his identity into Yoko, that he didn't know what to do with himself at that time. He needed to feel like he belonged somewhere. My take is that he had insecurities he struggled with and wasn't sure how to deal with them. Yoko made him feel needed. John and the rest of The Beatles had been like brothers, from their teen years through their late twenties. They had been of one mind in the early days. As they became men, their interests changed. There's nothing wrong with that; that is how life is. I think they didn't realize it was happening, though. If they did realize it, they weren't sure what to do about it. They had fewer and fewer shared experiences. Yoko accelerated the process. It didn't have to go the way that it did; they could have figured out how to endure. However, while they all enjoyed the absurd, and the random, John almost made a religion out of it in his relationship with Yoko. Bringing Yoko into their inner sanctum, which had only included George Martin, Geoff Emerick, Mal Evans, Neil Aspinall, and a few others, was an affront to the others. Notice that these were all men. This isn't sexism. The guys felt comfortable to be creative, open, and themselves. Now add a girlfriend...amidst a divorce...and a young son. That makes things awkward very quickly. Add to that, Yoko would sometimes give creative suggestions. If life-long trusted friends Mal or Neil made a suggestion, they would have found it easy to listen. Now, add Yoko, who was uninvited. This explanation is getting complicated rather quickly. I think growing up, growing apart, drugs, bad business, etc., certainly contributed to the breakup. Yoko was the catalyst that lit the fuse. Like you said, though, at least Paul and John had worked things out before John was murdered. Let that be a lesson to everyone to reconcile with their loved ones now. Tomorrow isn't guaranteed.

I read that the first one Yoko called the day after John died was Paul. This was exactly when she told him that John had loved him, so I think it meant so much more to him as John had just been shot the night before...
