As the 1960s came to a close, The Beatles, the biggest band in the world, were nearing their breakup. Their rising fame led to fractures in their internal relationships. Paul McCartney sought more creative control, John Lennon became increasingly focused on his partnership with Yoko Ono, and all the members were affected by the loss of their manager, Brian Epstein. These issues eventually became too great to overcome.
In the spring of 1970, The Beatles released their final studio album, *Let It Be*, a last collection of their classics before parting ways. Despite their disbandment, the band’s influence on music continued, as each member released a solo album in the same year as *Let It Be*.
Paul McCartney released his self-titled album McCartney nearly a month before Let It Be*. Ringo Starr followed with his second solo album, *Beaucoups of Blues*, in the autumn of 1970. George Harrison's *All Things Must Pass debuted in November, and John Lennon concluded the year with his first Plastic Ono Band release.
Although the Beatles were no longer working together, underlying tensions still existed. In 1971, McCartney acknowledged the ongoing rivalry among the former bandmates as they embarked on their solo careers. He saw this competition as a motivating factor, suggesting that it encouraged each Beatle to produce better music and affirming that they were all individually talented.
Harrison's All Things Must Pass demonstrated his songwriting prowess, which had often been overshadowed by Lennon and McCartney during his time with the Beatles. The album allowed him to showcase his abilities more fully.
Similarly, Lennon immersed himself in collaborations with Yoko Ono and a rotating lineup of the Plastic Ono Band, while McCartney worked solo and with Wings on songs like “Silly Love Songs” and “Band on the Run.” Starr’s solo efforts were less remarkable but continued nonetheless.
While the Beatles' solo projects did not match their collective success, their separation allowed each member to explore and develop their distinct musical styles. Harrison revealed his songwriting talent, and Lennon and McCartney flourished with new collaborators. The competitive edge from their previous tensions continued to drive them to produce their best work.
