Paul very recently wrote a two book set that is very revealing of his upbringing and his nature. It is the only book he has written, and well worth reading.

Paul is one of the finest men alive. His modesty is not at all false. His genius is revealed forever in Get Back. I love Paul, as, do people all throughout the world.

I really hope the interviewer asks Paul how he wrote Yesterday. I mean, I've SCOURED the internet and Paul's interviews......and I just cannot for the life of me find anything on how he wrote that. It's such a great song........but what was the process that lead to it's creation? Will Paul EVER finally tell us how it came to be? ;P

Paul is by far the best celebrity out there. He’s so real. No false humility, but truly humble at the same time. A great storyteller. So many interesting insights. Bob Costas does a superb job. I thoroughly enjoyed this interview. Paul McCartney is so special. I am a songwriter and watch every interview with him I can find. He shares so much interesting information about his process which is genius. I learn so much.. So glad I found this one. What a gift to this world he is. Just the best.

What makes this the best McCartney interview ever is the fact that the interviewer has done his research and he is asking some very good questions. McCartney responds to this and the two of them are then having a very intelligent conversation which is fascinating to listen to.
Agree! Loved it near the end, Costas asking him for the everlasting message of The Beatles. Quickly Paul nods and answers, "All you need is love." *pause* "Shall I elaborate?"
Costas doesn't get enough credit for this show. He really excelled with one guest and no audience, which can be very difficult to pull off. I saw an interview and he said that he found making the guests as comfortable as possible was just as important, if not more, than being prepared with good questions. They'd share things that they wouldn't with other interviewers.
November 5-7, 1991 (the week was filmed in course of one day). It was one of only two times (the other being for Milton Berle) that a guest got 3 successive nights.

This is the best McCartney interview I've ever heard. Credit to the interviewee and the interviewer. Paul is an inspirational individual. Such an optimist and SO talented!
Costas always did a good job. Yes, this interview with Paul is impressive. Only, Paul should've corrected Bob, on who wrote Day Tripper. It was John, not Paul. But, I digress, as Costas point about song genre labeling, was on point.
"I could be performing when I'm 90." I hope so! He's still a got a few more years till then, but Paul McCartney is one of the best, well-spoken rock-musicians ever. He nailed it when he said he had a good childhood. It shows! I fell in love with Sir Paul in 1964 because he was so darn cute and had "bedroom eyes". And he hasn't disappointed since then. Wonderful interview with Bob Costa.

My first immediate thought during this IW: Damn he has gorgeous eyes. What follows is a profound respect for Paul's intellect, musical genius, candor, charm, and gentle humor. To say "Abbey Road was a nice album" is perhaps the greatest of understatements. :-) We are all fortunate to have lived in the same time as this man.
I think what makes Paul so beloved is that he is so smart that he could really make a lot more money, and screw people over if he wanted to, but all that brilliance in a benevolent kind smart and loving guy ... pure family values, real family values. I admire the hell out of that guy.
Paul really is such a thoughtful person!! Not just my teenage dream!! We are all older now and can appreciate their humanity!! Paul is so awe inspiring, his ability to write so many adored songs. Paul is a poet extradinaire, I will always love him!! I'm 70 but was 13 the first time I heard him on the radio!!!
Many comments talk about how great "the interviewer" is. It's Bob Costas and he always was and still is a great interviewer. And Paul is great as both a talent and as a human being.
I saw him in Toronto 1992 or 1993 when he performed several Beatles songs live for the first time in concert. I was about 20 feet from the stage, almost dead centre in an aisle seat and remember getting goosebumps when he launched into Sgt Pepper, Penny Lane etc. It was a magical concert.

Actually he's 80 this year. Billy Shepherd was born in 1937. He makes mention of his actual age in the movie Magical Mystery Tour. The same movie that shows the beheaded body of JPM.
A fascinating interview, I could have listened to Paul for hours..... It is sad though to hear him talking about writing songs without John by his side. We can only wonder what the two of them could have created if John was still around today.......
Great interview.mi live just a few mile from all the Beatle homes, and go to them often, it is so magical when you stand there and see where they came from.
Wayne Dent. I'm British, but not from Liverpool & certainly not old enough haha!! BUT, because of it being a Port, lot's of American music (vinyl records) arrived there in the 1950's, Elvis, Blues, Soul etc which the Beatles generation grew up with. Similarly with the Stones in the London scene! btw Liverpool has a history going back to the 12th Century so there's plenty of history for you to explore!!
Of course they were aware of it. i think the thing WE are not aware of is what the Beatles decides to hide or keep for themselves - because they cannot be an open book with the public knowing everything about them. They were excellent and managing their image and presenting a message of positivity ... eschewing political sides. Who would have known that "stupid" John Lennon like Ronald Reagan so much, probably for tax cuts.
Somehow, Paul saw John as some kind of big brother figure and wanted/needed his respect and approval. I don't think John saw Paul in the same light. When Yoko came along John had little further use for Paul or the Beatles. Paul couldn't handle that rejection.

He did silly political things earlier in his life ,but liking Reagan near the end of his life,just showed me that he was "GETTING BETTER ALL THE TIME" up until he was assassinated . So glad to have happened upon this interview, in all my 50 odd years as a Beatles fan it's the best interview with Paul I've ever seen. Even after all these years I've learnt a lot from it that I hadn't heard before. Thanks so much for posting.
The right questions respectfully asked, let him finish always. Mr. McCartney sure has something to say, and the host knew that well. Thanks to both of them, really good. What he says about commercialising the songs makes 101 % sense.
Listening to Paul talk about Sgt. Pepper now during it's 50th anniversary makes me smile. That album revolutionized music and is still regarded as the greatest album of all time!
My favorite has always been Abbey Road but music, like wine, is about what stirs your soul, and what stirs me may not be what stirs you. I respect your opinion.

Why have the Beatles persisted? Loads of talent and great music, sure, but I think when Paul speaks of their artistry and, at the end of the interview, their integrity to their music and the need to connect with their fans, that really nails it. I mean, he doesn't need the money, yet he still performs to crowds of all ages. Good for him (and us)!!!

Paul once said, “There’s always the guy in the bowler hat who hates what you’re doing. We always knew that there’s the establishment, then there’s the working people,” Paul added. “And we were the working people. Working people tended to get us, and understand what we were doing. And occasionally, you would get the kind of snob who would get angry. In a way, that was part of the fun.”
A truly well done interview by Bob Costas with Paul and Paul is very forthcoming. Excellent. I've always liked Bob Costas as an interviewer. He allows time for answers from his guest without interrupting.
Paul is so tongue-in-cheek here with his use of language. Listen to how he hides titles of John Lennon songs in his descriptions of him. "If you can IMAGINE" - " Well, you know John was a JEALOUS GUY". The reason this interview is amazing is because Paul is remembering John by engaging in wordplay as though John were alive, in the way that they maybe did together when writing songs. And in a subliminal way he's telling you that a songwriter lives on in an active way through their songs. Whether he means to or not. Perhaps Paul is more responsible for the subliminal/weird content of Beatles records. The kind of content that you might ascribe to John...but I do not know any of this.
It's a very interesting and deep point, I didn't realize he had done that before reading your comment. Over the past couple of days I've watched quite a few of Pauls interviews, he says himself that some of the songs came to him subliminally, like Yesterday he dreamt it, Paul didn't realize till afterwards when somebody said to him "that songs your mum" and he said, "Ah yes, it probably is". Also, Eleanor Rigby, he had the name, Eleanor but he couldn't think of a fitting surname which would fit the melody of the song, that's when he saw Rigby on a shop front signpost. Later it was discovered that Eleanor Rigby was engraved on a gravestone quite close to his and Johns house. He said himself he'd probably seen that gravestone and the name might have stayed with him subliminally. I think Pauls obviously a very talented and intelligent man and retains a lot of information in his brain and maybe songwriting so many songs have encouraged growth in the particular areas responsible, so much so that it's natural and flows out of him without him even thinking about it. Or maybe it's just fate and everything is meant to be the way it is.
I really love what he had to say about songs being used in commercials. Any time I hear a song in a commercial I don't like it as much. This has even happened to me with Beatles songs. But I still love the songs because they're The Beatles.

I was at that concert "New World Tour" 1993 at New Jersey Meadowlands. Paul did most of his own songs and in doing so, I said to myself "He is The Beatles" But I have to say, there was multiple jumbotron screens behind him. There was one scene when part of a face appeared until all the screens appeared John Lennon's face. Paul got down on one knee with both hands together held up high Paul Said "I miss you, buddy, I love You" Not a dry eye in the stadium, people of all ages broke out into tears, including me.
@@UncompressedWAVmusic Some things that move us to tears we never forget. If I'm still around when or if Paul passes on I'm not sure I can handle it. I was in the 6th grade in '64 and literally grew up with the Beatles and their music. I bought my first guitar in the mid-'60s, along with the 2 Beatles music books "Beatles Complete" I had a field day playing song after song. To this day, when I pick up a guitar, my go-to song The Beatles. .

Thanks for the upload! What a great interview, so raw, so genuine, so open. At 49 Paul looks great!! (as I type this, Paul is now 75 years old!!! wow!! lol). Through the interview, I loved Paul's reflection on John especially.
I love when Paul says that even if George didn't get a reconciling conversation with John before he died, it wouldn't matter because they all loved each other and they all knew they loved each other. I believe it is true. I admire them as the most decent of humans! I appreciate and enjoy all the great art and talent. Ah, when they was fab!

This is an outstanding interview. The candour and flow is amazing. McCartney has enough distance from the heady years to be clear and have perspective, but is still young enough to recall that energy for what it was. And the interviewer lets him talk.
When Paul was honored with the Gershin award at the White House, Obama said something like Paul was part of just shy of 200 chart hits, and 32 years of accumulated time on the radio! WOW!!!!
The nice thing about watching Bob Costas interview a musician, is that he (Bob) clearly knows music. It matters when the interviewer knows the subject area.
I saw a Beatles interview from the early sixties and the interviewer asked John if the Beatles ever considered adding harmonies to their music. Idiot had obviously never listened to a single Beatles song.

Sorry but Paul McCartney was never in wings it was this man Billy shears , look up Graham nash of the hollies , then of nash stills and young who knew Paul very well this Billy replaced Paul in 1967,, RIP PAUL 1966..
I had the privilege of seeing this interview when it originally aired on Later in either '92 or '93. So many things Mr. McCartney said have stuck with me ever since. It was wonderful to see this again. Thank you for posting this!
A great interview in no small part because of the intelligence and articulation of Mr. Bob Kostis... and Paul was at his best, very relaxed, feeling very much in the flow. Bob is a fantastic resource in the world of broadcast TV
All you need is love! I love the Beatles' message :) So true, if you receive healthy love in childhood, you are very likely to grow up to a secure adult.
7:06 - Here is an interesting moment where Paul reflects on the fact that he probably had the best childhood and family life of any of the Beatles. He had a huge family, both parents, a lot of relatives, etc, and Ringo was in hospital with tuberculosis as a kid. John lived with his aunt? I think it was. George had a more normal family, but still you can really see the security and confidence Paul derived from his family in his behavior, but also in his pictures and lifestyle, etc. So interesting.
Other than the songwriting dynamics of Paul and John, I have always looked at their lives like how you described it. I have a cousin I grew up with. He had a great upbringing with loving parents and relatives similar to Paul's. He's charming, sociable, very successful. I was an abandoned child and acted like John did for a long time. We are formed by our childhood. Parents' upbringing of their kids is really a game changer. However, I did become a Paul in mindset in adulthood, after realizing I needed direction.
It wasn't perfect. He lost his mother when he was only 14. That's one of things he and John had in common, moms dying young. It was a strong bond, esp in those early years.

Yes great interview. Every Beatle fan knows, or at least liked to believe no matter what they all loved each other, but it's nice to hear it from them. Another interview somewhere (forget which Beatle said) " First and foremost we were mates". Only 4 people on earth experienced what they went through, and that has bonded them for ever.
I really enjoyed this; Paul was far more lucid and revealing than ever before. Which has to be due to the quality of the interviewer's questions, and pacing of the whole 30 minutes.

Yes, excellent interview. Costas did his homework, asked great questions, was respectful and appreciative of McCartney. McCartney was relaxed and comfortable, said many wise and clever things.
