People dont seem to get the point of Scaled and Icy, it was meant to be less lyrically, but it's the hints in between the lyrics that set the narrative. Tyler is just good like that
@@CJPapan Paul only helped with Redecorate, which is, instrumentally, my favorite on the album. I think Tyler and Paul are a dream team... at least whatever they had going on with Trench was a masterpiece. I hope we get another Trench-like era because SAI wasn't really doing it for me... I mean aesthetically it was nice, but the music not so much.. 😔
Please do more of these. Trench is the greatest album of all time, and I want to be a producer myself, so I love watching stuff like this. Every single song on trench deserves a breakdown lasting 5 hours each.
I have no words for how much this delights and fascinates me. Thank you for using your talents to create such greatness and then taking us along for the ride. You and Tyler are both just SO talented and I hope you never stop collaborating. ❤️
Ok can I just say... Can we get Paul & Tyler in this room!! Id love to see them hang out talk about the album.. Go over certain conversations they had discussing songs... 🙏😭 stories ect. Like how Paul does he.. But also with Tyler.... Damn!!!
That would be cool, huh?! I wish there was a Criterion Collection for music. I’m a big fan of Criterion , and they tend to offer up all kinds of behind the scenes , outtakes , etc.
Brilliant. Had NO idea Paul worked on this record. But it makes perfect sense! MUTEMATH is one of my favorite bands and am so happy that Paul's genius is reaching even more ears :)
Im a massive Paul Meany fan, and I just absolutely love how he is praising Tyler the whole time for his amazing lyrical talent, instead of making it all about himself. Hes such a humble guy. Love 21 Pilots, I Miss Mutemath 🥲
This is what happens when two creatively genius, absolutely visionary artists and musicians come together. These two created this Trench utopia in which music, story, and emotion are being expressed like they never have before. Two of the most talented musicians and producers of our time in a room... get's us songs like Chlorine, Morph, Cut My Lip, Bandito, and Pet Cheetah. If we got Paul on the next TOP album, we're gonna have another album that leaves so many speechless.
a video like this, breaking down their songs, is something ive been wanting to see really badly since the making of vessel, when tyler quickly showed some demos. and to see it happening now ESPECIALLY with the making of trench, which is such an amazingly constructed album, just makes me so so so happy. this is like winning the lottery for my clikkie musician brain
ONCE YOU WATCH ANY BREAKDOWN OF A SONG AND THE PRODUCER PLAYED EVERY SINGLE AUDIO IN IT. YOU'LL HEAR THEM WHEN LISTENING TO THE ORIGINAL AGUDIO AND IT IS THE MOST MAGICAL THING❤️
Trench is my favorite album of all time. I'm old and music is my life. Musically, lyrically, sonically, tone and vibe. Nothing compares to it to me. I have all the vinyl variants, signed CD's (would be cool to have your signature next to Tyler and Josh), the cassette...I'm legit with my love for Trench. I hope you are involved with whatever is next. I have a question Paul, are you still in Louisiana like me? I'd love to meet you, you made something that really impacted my life.
Please work on their next project closing out the DEMA storyline. We need your fingerprints all over it! Edit: I KNEW those piano texture effects at 5:10 were your doing! That makes the song.
Paul Meany is a phenomenal musician, vocalist, writer and producer and as soon as I heard this song I spotted his signature. At first I thought that someone who is a Mutemath fan "borrowed" a little bit for this song. This video finally revealed who is behind this production and I am very pleased!
Me, too. I’m a photographer, and now a first time filmmaker. I LOVE the production of Trench and now Clancy is INCREDIBLE. I’m a big fan of SAI, too, although I know Paul isn’t on that album. These videos are awesome
I would absolutely love to know what the FX behind the piano are in the intro for Bandito. They just tickle my ears in the exact right way. The creaky-crinkly sounds are what I'm talking about.
WOW! Love this breakdown of the production process on Chlorine, Paul! Had no idea. My fav song on Trench and that’s largely due to the Outro which still makes me cry. 🥹The honesty of Tyler talking directly to us (I believe) after the 1 year hiatus that followed the huge commercial success of Stressed Out catapulted TØP into the limelight. One of my fav all-time TØP lyrics: “I’ve been tested like the end of a weathered flag that’s by the sea” followed by the deep “can you build my house…” Just brilliant. Great production job, guys. I love it even more, knowing all that went into it 👏
Trench is an amazing album, and this is coming from an old guy whose musical wheelhouse is solidly early 1980s. I don’t know what you call it, but that “piano breakdown” chord sequence in Bandito just grabs me by the throat every time.
That was phenomenal! This not only makes me appreciate all the incredible work you, Tyler, and Josh are doing, but it also shows the world how much goes into making music. I don't think it gets recognized enough for the beautiful art you all create. Thank you!
So I take it Tyler send you his demo, along with the flat stems, and his notes on what he wants. With stuff like the pitched-down robotic vox, is that just written in a note to do it like that, or is it your input?
This was amazing man. Thank you for sharing this. Absolutely loved Trench. You're right about Tyler.... God given artist. God gave him his talent....and gave us him.
How cool to see and hear some of the pieces and parts that made up this song. I loved hearing all the layers broken down and then put back together. Absolute Audible Masterpiece!!
Seeing this is wonderful given that Trench in my favorite record ever, and I listened to a bunch of records. Great inspiration for young artists! Thanks Paul, you’re amazing!! ❤
Yes very much so. For creating drums on the track within the DAW, it’s much easier to program pre-recorded drum sounds that sound very close to what they want Josh to play and how they want it to sound. Prior to final mixes and mastering, drummers then record themselves playing with each drum part mic’d up. Often times they’ll use the recorded drums the drummer plays along with some of the pre-programmed elements. Hence why it always sounds different in a live setting than on audio.
Plus I’m more than sure they do a lot of consulting and get a lot feedback from Josh directly on how the drums should sound prior to programming. And he makes edits when recording
God created us. We came from Adam and Eve. They were given choice and decided to ignore God's warning. They disobeyed. They were removed from paradise and were fallen. We have the same nature as them when we are born as humans. Unless we are born again. The only way to be born again is to trust in what Jesus did on our behalf, facing God's wrath which we deserved to face even though He lived a sinless life, even to death. Forgiveness of sins is only found in Jesus's name. He then rose again from the grave and is seated at the right hand of the Father until He returns. He was born of a Virgin and fulfilled prophecies about the Messiah handed and conveyed to us by prophets and those influenced by the Holy Spirit. If we are born again, we are sealed by the Holy Spirit and being sanctified until Jesus returns. The Holy Spirit gives us a desire to honor God, He convicts us of sin and helps us to become more like Jesus. Works are evidence of the state of our faith and whether or not our faith is in the right thing. (For example... our works will show when we trust in our own works/obedience rather than trusting in Jesus and our faith leading to delighting in obedience. For example... believing we are set free to sin will lead to no fruit being produced. Both of these things are going to show fruit of dead faith.) Good works are not our response to God's grace. They are what God's grace causes in us when He gives us a new heart and the Holy Spirit.
I don't know if you worked on the production of Earth Suit but growing up, I loved it! I felt the musicality and sound was ahead of its time. Felt the genius.
I could listen to this stuff all day long!! Absolutely fascinating to hear the intricate layers pulled apart and describe their origin and purpose 🙌. Thank you so much for this 🙏 You guys are incredible together and I hope you guys continue to collaborate for decades to come 👌 Can’t wait for your solo 1PM project to get going too 🔥
Paul, this is fascinating. Trench is my all time favorite album, and I love learning about all the production that went into it. Please keep making these! I would love to have a series with every song getting its' own video.
