Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward were that rarity: a happily-married Hollywood couple. But the story of their life together was partly myth, as explored in the new HBO Max docuseries, "The Last Movie Stars." Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz talks with actor Ethan Hawke, the series' director, and with Paul and Joanne's daughter, Clea Newman, about how the couple's seemingly perfect life had its share of turbulence off-screen, and what made the couple's stardom and marriage unique.
"CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

Paul and Joanne remind us of something that I have always intuited: the best relationships require a lot of work, but the work feels worthwhile. It isn’t a chore. It isn’t tedious. Rather, it is in service of a larger goal.

I buy the Newman products because they are good quality and actually less expensive than other products of the same quality. It's a wonder how they are able to give away a decent amount of profits to charity. I love their organic black and green teas. $4.39 for a box of 100 tea bags.

She was so right when she said that no one knows what really goes on between two people in a marriage, only the two people really know. Even when you are Paul & Joanne Newman...I always buy their Newman's Own products whenever I can. Because 100% of the profits go to the charity. They never took a dime of that money. Which tells me all I need to know about them. But they were human beings with faults and feelings just like all of us, their celebrity status was just what they did for a living...

I worked with an obnoxious, older lady at the MIA airport in the 1970s. She would run after celebrities to get their autographs. I once witnessed her jumping into Barbara Eden's limo to get hers. Thank god, Ms. Eden was gracious and laughed it off. When she ambushed Paul Newman for his autograph, he politely and kindly declined her request and walked away. I could tell that he wasn't thrilled about his celebrity, and was perhaps shy. I met many celebrities who were entitled jerks, he was not one of them. I can't wait to see this documentary!

They were both extraordinary actors, and he was a very inspired director. I always knew that the “storybook” description of their marriage couldn’t be entirely true but, hey, they were human. Woodward’s performance in “Marigolds,” directed by Newman, was one of the fiercest poignant portrayals I’ve ever seen. After Streisand’s Oscar win, she admitted that she didn’t expect that she or Hepburn would win; she said, “I was sure that Joanne Woodward was gonna win!”

for those of us that grew up with Joanne Woodward and (especially) Paul Newman as the example of "movie stars" this is so poignant on so many levels.... including the simple passing of an era, of our generation. As my life and others enter further into the 4th quarter... I still can't imagine what it would be like to be told within a week, one partner will disappearing into the sad darkness of dementia while the other is told he will be dying shortly from terminal cancer. The curtain was coming down on two extraordinary lives... and what a run it must have been.

It was Katherine Hepburn and Bette Davis referred to actresses having children as very hard- mostly for the children. Kate said it’s a very self-obsessed profession and she had seen too many kids deal with a mother for whom acting comes first. Her audio book went into detail, appreciated her honesty. I saw Newman in an airport once - was shocked how small he was! They can look so different onscreen!!

#LynnRozakis: If that Hollywood story really grabs you, try looking up the life and times of Patricia Neal when you have a chance. Has her film debut, THE FOUNTAINHEAD. become the beginning of her affair with then-married Gary Cooper. Goes through a second marriage with famed author Roald Dahl, whose granddaughter would become an actress herself, Sophie Dahl. Bookends the 1960's with TWO HEART ATTACKS! Relearning how to walk and talk essentially 3 times in her life. Knowing this, having her introduce the 1966 Academy Award for Best Foreign Film was a major triumph considering she was nearly dead 2 years earlier. RU-vid has that Oscar footage, in case your curious. Her life even inspired a 1981 Made-for-TV movie about her film career and struggles!

If you watch the docuseries, you’ll see Stephanie Newman, the daughter in the clip shown from the first marriage has only beautiful things to say about her stepmother,Joanne. However difficult it was, in the documentary it’s clear there is no bitterness about the divorce. They tried to make a wonderful blended family although things weren’t perfect. There was never an absence of love. That’s something worth mentioning. The series is entertaining, engrossing and revealing. Ethan Hawke deserves all the accolades he’s getting.

It's a shame that Newman and Redford didn't get to make a 3rd film together. Redford had the perfect project in mind, though, and he did end up getting it made. However, since Paul was too ill to co-star along side him, Nick Nolte ended up with the role. The film was A Walk in the Woods. Always loved Paul Newman especially as an film actor with Robert Redford in ‘The Sting’ and ‘ Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid ‘ which came out and I saw in my first years at University. Never realised Paul had left his first wife and 3 kids to marry Joanne Woodward but she was then in conflict as the mother herself of 3 children who despite being the better actor felt she had to stay at home to bring up children and certainly early on almost regretted having children for causing her to lose her career. Their marriage worked cos they worked together on their individual and joint egos and his excessive drinking.They gave vast amounts to charity but even in death ‘ the last person he wanted to connect with was her ‘ according to their daughter. And I ALWAYS found both Paul Newman and Robert Redford VERY sexy, not just for their looks, but for the rather ‘ off the wall ‘ characters they played and their ridiculous sense of humour !

I'll pass on watching the documentary. It should be called "Typical Movie Star Couples." Nothing new then and now about celebrity couples- Infidelity, the envy of a spouse's success, and a father neglecting the children from a prior relationship.

I agree. You get away with a lot when you're a movie star with great looks.

0:40 "He's Paul Newman. With those fierce blue eyes and that flawless face." Yeah... you could say that again. He was one extraordinary specimen of a human being. With enough self-deprecation that he would laughed the loudest if he read this comment.

I’m not one to power watch anything. I watched this series beginning to end over two nights. It is an exceptional story of two people who at certain points have every reason to call it quits and don’t. The best thing I’ve seen in a long time.

Struggling with alcohol rn. I’m not a kid anymore and it’s not ok to drink this much. I saw someone today for help. But denied in patient care so I could have a couple more days of fun. I hope that’s all it is and I can stop being so weak and go through with help. Getting to the point that it can get to is starting to be scary

I hope you will pray to Jesus, asking for His help. Believe that He died on the cross (and rose from the dead) to pay the penalty for your sins so that someday you can be with Him forever in heaven. If you repent of your sins and turn your life over to Jesus, asking Him to be your Lord and Savior, He will give you eternal life. And with the help of the Holy Spirit, I pray you will be set free from the bondage of alcoholism. Very few people can overcome an addiction in their own strength. But with God's help, all things are possible. "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; to appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified." (Isaiah 61:1‭-‬3 KJV) Jesus fulfilled the above verses in Luke 4:18-21.

I always felt for the first wife. It wasn't like she was a bad wife or bad mother , from the stories I know of, and she wasn't ugly. how it must have felt to look up and see your former husband who vowed to honor , cherish and obey you, with another woman, with other children, with an acting career, and charities, and a big name, and racing cars, just living his best life...without you. my goodness I'd go insane and probably would sincerely think about whooping Woodward's behind every time I saw her just so Newman knew it was his fault. She must have had way more class than I could ever wish to have.

The fact that he got what she always dreamed of: stardom and success. Must've created tension between the two, her words about motherhood are telling a lot. She was having a hard time & her ego was hurt. I think Paul had to work hard to keep her happy with everything, hope he never made her feel inferior to him. Poor Jo.

There is your ego and there is my ego and there is our ego. Never heard it said that way before but now this is one of my favorite statements. I definitely believe a marriage definitely works better when both parties work on our ego, lifting both people up to form a stronger unit.

If only people (women _and_ men) were free to speak truthfully about being a parent. All you ever hear is that being a parent is hard but it's the most rewarding thing you could ever do in your life. The truth is, it's not for everyone, and not everyone is cut out to be a good parent. If that were common knowledge, we might have a healthier society.

I don't know anyone private or public that would want to show that their marriage was not perfect and delve into their personal issues I've been married and I know for a fact there's some things that we fought about were totally stupid and embarrassing but something's were really legitimate but it's really Nobody's Business
@cheri7054
@cheri7054 2 года назад
@@gigid9606 I agree with you but seriously as a public figure dirt comes out and it's better to hear it from the source rather then tabloids. People looked up to this couple and thought they were perfect. Nobodies perfect and that's his point. We must not idolize famous people.
