my big trike is an 1100 virago with a nissan differential, chevy ignition coils , a delco alternator ran off of the drive shaft, dodge ballast resistor, ford starter solenoid, honda ignition points, and this monster seats 4 adults, pulls a trailer and will haul a 1 ton payload. im a virago enthusiast. they built one good engine once you overcome the squintyeye technology.. i run a fullsized truck battery also. no need to fuck around. ive drove this machine for 28 years..
Hi there searcymasonry Interested the conversions you have made..very inovative.. I agree those engine designs are absolutely one of the best ever out of Japan.
i install a steel plunger thru the decorative cap of the starter solenoid. its just a brass fitting and a bolt / nut. when i crank the engine i apply lateral foot pressure on the bolt which keeps the solenoid positively engaged. the gears cant walk off each other. for the slipping starter gear i weld the planetary gear ring to its mating keyed hub. just a couple tack welds is all it takes..
You have to turn them upside down on anything but a reliat rear end..That is the beauty of you guys having those available..we do not so they muct be flipped.
i used a 70,s era datsun diff on one trike. the desired ratio was obtained by using tall 15 inch tires. the latest trike i used a 80,s buick diff on. its pretty tall geared but will still be fine when i get a couple inch shorter rear tires.. id advise using rearends from the 70,s because in the 80,s the car mfgrs geared them up tall to get fuel mileage..
I started a project last summer,with a 06 Honda shadow 11,00 drive shaft.half way the project lost my job.sold my project for $1,000 dollars the bike along was $2,500.got me a job 6 months later with less pay.sold the welder to.
Chevette rear end for a trike... Awesome! What gear ratio would you recommend for the Chevette rear end?? The trike will be an around town with some short distance (15 Mile) interstate driving
I know this was a long time ago. I only just came across this . could you or somebody tell me how to go about converting the swing arm like what has been done in this video. Any help would be appreciated .
if you undo the nuts on the diff you can remove the gears they all come out in one lump and refit them the other way round so my axle is the same way up as it was when on the reliant but if you put it back on a reliant it would now go backwards
Hi there They do indeed looke like commercial looking rearends..you muct be in North American. I the uk and other parts of Europe they had a three wheeld vehicle that was registered as a trike..the Reliant...not available here..damn..they are light weight and do not need to be flipped...I myself used a chey chevette rear end and had to flip it as well...we don't have the luxury of those type of rear ends..makes things a whole lot simpler..
you dont have to turn them upside down i opened the diff and turned the gears round the the axle is the right way up but the trike goes forwards i used a reliant rialto axle
id like to know where those commercial looking differentials come from. i use normal automobile differentials but you have to run them upside down or youll have 5 speeds of reverse..
