We need more public accessible ranges. Not just some places where I need to buy $30 ammo for $20 range access to shoot $300 pistol after driving an hour one way with $4/gallon gas.
@@jamescooper2618 I think a more correct phrasing of my above post is that there are some things that we all *know*, but because we are fallable meatsacks we need reminders of every now and then. That's why refresher/recertification training is often a very good idea. For example I track my car, but do it maybe a few times a year. Before going each time I watch a video on track rules/safety as a reminder to myself. At least as a reminder for what all the different flag colors/patterns mean 😂
My top ten are: 1 - the 4 rules of gun safety 2 - zero your gun with the ammo you use 3 - the gun in hand (or pocket) is better than the gun at home 4 - conceal carry with a safe holster 5 - know your local laws and where ever else you bring a gun 6 - learn to shoot your carry gun 7 - rust and politicians are the guns worst enemies 8 - find the gun that works for you. In finland i can buy and keep 32 acp fmj pistol cartridges but not hollowpoint because they are very dangerous by law. For example, the 308win rifle is not subject to the same restrictions because the law makers know that the 308 hollowpoint is not a very dangerous cartridge after al. Gun laws around the world are more or less absurd.

Without that basic legal knowledge your firearms licence ownership will be very short. In the state where I reside, buying an AR consists of: walking into a store, picking one up off the rack, bringing it to the cashier, filling out some paperwork, showing ID, waiting for the clerk to call in the background check, paying for it, and walking out. Just a few miles south in another state, possession of an AR, in any capacity other than military or LE, is a felony.

The laws bit is a very commonly overlooked thing that gets a lot of good people hung up. I drive between Idaho and Oregon quite a bit. Every time I do, I have to stop at the rest stop before the Oregon border, take off my concealed carry rig, and store them appropriately in the trunk. It's saved me from being charged with illegally carrying in Oregon more than once. edit: Get a dash cam that records both the road & the cab. Preferably one with GPS that tracks speed. It will pay for itself on your first traffic stop.

I live in a 2A sanctuary county in the Florida panhandle (where it's traditionally very conservative compared to down south in the peninsula) where the sheriff has gone on record to say he's very 2A. A couple of years ago my friend's elderly 70 year old mother was stopped for speeding. The deputies saw that she had a concealed carry permit--a document from the STATE government authorizing her to carry a firearm, though it was a right that she did not exercise--and they pulled her out of her car, and they proceeded to search her car for a gun she did not carry. A year later a deputy stopped me for a tail light. He saw my concealed carry permit (I wasn't flashing it around; it just happened to be right behind my driver's license), and demanded to see my gun so that he could run the numbers on it. Just because you live in a "2A sanctuary", do NOT assume that the local cops are going to be friendly with you JUST because you have a permit issued by the state government. And don't believe everything a sheriff says. They're basically just politicians with a badge.

I'm glad Paul mentioned knives as well. Laws can and do vary from state to state as to what's legal to carry. Case in point, my ex g/f is from rural Mississippi and she always carried a knife, sometimes a couple different 1s. Where I live, there are several county as well as city laws stating what's legal to carry, and WHERE. ALL of her knives were illegal to carry here. There are rules about blade length, foldable, etc, and all switch blades and butterfly knives are illegal here. Bottom line is Paul gives a great 'food for thought' presentation here! Thx!!

Once during a traffic stop, as the officer handed me my ticket, and as I was just about to pull away, the officer asked me if I had any more questions when I hadn't asked any questions. He kept being overly inquisitive about me having any questions to ask as if he was trying to extend the whole encounter.

Paul is 100% right about his point on police officers. I've been an officer for 5 years and it seems I have to go over using the bolt release instead of the charging handle and what a forward assist is actually for for guys that have been officers since I was in the 1st grade. There is alot of firearms inexperience among the LE community to say the least. There are also plenty who would be plenty happy to lie because you have upset their ego. Some of our stereotypes are indeed well earned.
In your experience how often do cops have to requality with the use of their duty pistol during their career? Many people assume that just because someone got the badge then they're a pro, but from the stories I've read many of our officers from across the country couldn't hit the broad side of a barn 😅
@@AB0BA_69 Once every few months with pistols. Once a year with Ar15s for patrol. We got rid of the 590s because people whined about recoil. Most guys dont even bother to clean their pistols in between. Our average marksmanship score is pretty embarrassing even among our SWAT because it's decided by politics/ who's friends with who as opposed to merit. SWAT trains once a month and it's mostly trying to get people to do cardio and hit something under less than ideal range conditions...its usually even more embarrassing. A big chunk of our team is in big trouble the day we happen Upon someone that actually intends to put up a fight and can run a rifle under stress. Once I sort out some finances, I intend to go county somewhere. The stereotypes of city cops being annoying, cliquey dude bro's is 100% correct if my department is any indication.

I being in Illinois i see a larger majority of police officers that are not so well trained and educated in what our state gun laws actually are. I cant really blame them due to illinois laws, however, I have been hassled on various occasions while concealed carrying. In saying this, I will say that the issues never went beyond the conversational context.
The same in New Jersey, if not worse. In New Jersey, the State Police not only write the regulations that govern the sale of ammunition, but they also instruct gun stores on the law and inspect their records. Until recently, under the clear language of law passed by the Legislature, the *only* form of identification for the purchase of handgun ammunition was a Firearms ID Card (which does not have you picture on it but does have your fingerprint). A couple of years ago I went to buy two boxes of .38 Special at a well established and old dealer, but they refused to make the sale because (although my Firearms ID Card was a valid) that (contrary to the law) . When I showed them my driver's license with photo, they could not make the sale the sale because that the addresses did not match (putting aside that there were 30 years between the issuance of the two IDs, the Firearms ID Card is required to have my street address and my driver's license has my post office box address for the receipt of motor vehicle notices and mail is not delivered to my street address). Yes, the police make up their own laws in New Jersey. Just like when local police arrested a guy carrying Critical Defense and charged him with illegal possession of hollow point ammunition when the State Police had ruled that Critical Defense is *not* hollow point ammunition. Other example of police idiocy in New Jersey about gun laws abound.
This is a good point. Not only in Illinois and not only gun laws. Cops often don't know what the laws are. Given the thousands of convoluted laws in our country, it's kind of understandable that they can't really know them all, but it's something that you have to keep in mind.

There were two public hearings over the past three days regarding clarifications on the ban. THe problem is that the law is almost 100 pages long, contradicts itself in several places, is cripplingly vague and overbroad, uses legally undefined terms and language and fails to define much of it, and is crushingly unclear. Some of the choice examples from the first day of questioning: "The law states that the capacity limit for a shotgun is 5 rounds. @@009013M3 New Jersey is every bit as bad and illogical. For example, until very recently, a .22 caliber rifle with a tubular magazine (think of the ones at carnivals that load through the buttstock) that held more than a certain number of rounds was an illegal "assault weapon." Same issue, while it may be legal if you only consider .22 LR, it would be illegal if you count .22 short, or CB caps. Get it wrong, do 10 years. Ever hear of a Colt Revolving Rifle (from the Civil War era)? Guess what -- they are considered to be destructive devices like a bomb. Remember those air powered BB guns at carnivals that you used to try to shoot out the red star? Guess what. Air guns are considered firearms in NJ and these carnival BB guns are classified as "machine guns" the same as an M240. Do many more than 10 years for that. Oh, and don't get me started on slingshots. Under N.J. law, they are prohibited weapons and you will do 5 years. It is so bad and blatant here that a State Senator publicly stated that they intended to pass laws that the were unconstitutional and went ahead and passed them anyway
I watch everyone on 2X speed, it's the only way I can keep up with all the channels I follow and still have a life. Paul's verbal cadence is perfect because even at 2X I'm hearing everything clearly.
Massad Ayoob told a story about a police detective who was a bit lazy when it came to routine gun maintenance. He would periodically open his revolvers cylinder without removing the ammo and spray the weapon with a cleaner/lubricant product. He responded to an armed robbery in progress call and got on scene just in time to meet the perpetrator coming out of the crime scene. The robber raised his weapon but the detective was quicker, aimed at the suspect and pulled the trigger on his duty weapon which misfired. The bad guy thinking he was shot by the detective dropped in his tracks and upon regaining consciousness found himself unscathed and under arrest. It seems that the cleaner/lubricant the detective used had leeched into the primers of his duty ammo and effectively killed the primers causing the officer to have six duds loaded in his duty weapon. Talk about a lucky one shot stop. Needless to say the detective changed his maintenance protocol after that.😂😂😂
1. In my gun store I have a sign, RULE Zero: What you see in movies or on TV is probably stupid and may get you killed. I should add video games, I guess. 2. The 30 W.C.F. was the first sporting smokeless cartridge. It is still a viable hunting cartridge and very popular here in New Mexico. The 8mm Lebel was the first smokeless cartridge. 3. If he could bring that kind of character to someone I've never seen or met, the old cigar afficionado of federal corruption in the late 20th century is not a surprise. Im glad I found this guy I've been binge watching him for days. I just started iwb carrying everyday since last year but I still am learning all the time and alot of info I've got from this guy even just the last few days. Can't believe I didn't see this guy before the algorithm doesn't show us alot of the best.

“Obsolete” usually means that it is no longer produced or commonly used. 30-30 ammo is still factory produced, available as a chambering in new factory rifles, and still works as effectively in specific environments on intended game as any modern equivalent. The 30-30 provides performance within a set of parameters that include low recoil, long barrel life, high tube magazine capacity, and >1000ftlbs energy @200yds with accuracy over iron sights. To produce a more modern cartridge to those parameters using modern powders will bring you back to near 30-30 ballistics, as evidenced be a number of modern straight-walled attempts in the same caliber. The 30-30 is still here because it might be old, but nowhere close to obsolete. Many hunters still use 30-30 effectively to harvest deer each year in the woods. When coupled with the beautifully balanced and quick aiming Win 94 or the sturdy and reliable Marlin 336 in the hands of a rifleman, that good ol’ 30-30 will put any meat with 200yds in the freezer.
Its funny that 30-30's capabilities was brought up as 7.62x39 is almost a ballistic twin to 30-30 (within similar bullet weighs). Not that 7.62 makes it obsolete but more the russkies basically just made a rimless 30-30.
@@slimjim2584 Yes, and there is also the .30 Remington as a rimless equivalent, but the Rem model 8 that introduced this cartridge was not as well received by hunters. The 5 shot capacity is not bad, but is less, and there is no option for tube magazines. Box magazines were seen as a disadvantage to load and unload in the field by the grumpy old timers. The big advantage of .30Rem, like the 7.62x39, was that you can use the pointed bullets, so the ballistics could have been better in practice if it could take advantage of a better BC. However, at about 100yards, the deer did not seem to know the difference. The .308 Savage and the .308 Win gave better performance and found adoption in the military, which led to the obsoletion of the .30Rem. As far as I know, they stopped making factory .30Rem over 30 years ago. That the 30-30 is still alive and the .30Rem is quickly becoming history shows a bit of the difference between active and obsolete. Of course echoes of the .30Rem can be heard in the 6.8SPC that was developed from the .30Rem case.

Thanks Paul, I was also born in Portland and lived in Bend since Grandpa and Dad are gone I like to check in with you for my safety meetings over the last few years. Grandpa was 10th Mtn and Dad was a SeaBee, Im a plankowner of the USS Ranger. I was a member of the NRA when I was 6 and got my hunter's safety license when I was 10. Got my first Shotgun and Rifle that Christmas. Savage 110 30-06 left-handed from Dad and Harrington Richardson breach barrel 20 guage from Grandpa. Which I still have and Im 53. I never forgot a single word they ever said I shot 100,000 rounds at least and never had an accidental discharge in my life. I took on their role and I always make everyone repeat the rules of gun safety before we shoot but sometimes I want to be the student and I am still a good student and you always are the closest thing to reminding me of them. Might just be an Oregonian thing but when I want to get good advice or learn something new over several years I come to you. I just wanted to say thanks for that. Warriors and Shellbacks always get a seat at the table so Ill see you there if I don't see you before which I hope I do and God hears me. I like to see you win this one, I lost this year already to it the best of us too. You made a difference and so did she. Thanks for the informative video, I am in Canada and many of your points are on point regardless. One of our club members was charged with transporting a loaded firearm, in Canada you cannot have a loaded firearm in your vehicle even on the way to a range. You can have a Loaded magazine, as long as it is not Touching, inserted or tethered or otherwise attached to a firearm. The member had decided to go home and had a magazine still full but decided he would deal with it at home and threw it in with the rifle rather than in a separate bag, He got pulled over for speeding and the cop noticed the rifle bag and ask to look, the gun bag was in plain view and not locked so he could not really refuse, as soon as the officer saw the mag was in with the gun and had ammo in it, the firearm was seized and charges laid. By the way, the speeding charge was never laid and he claims he was not speeding... But he was on the road from a rifle/pistol range... The club recommends that all members lock cases and say no when asked if an officer can "Have a look" as a locked case would require a warrant and there would be no probable cause to get one.
I once knew a teenager who trained in our gym. He went on and on one night about how the SIG P226 was his absolute favorite pistol. Well that was my duty pistol at the time so I brought mine in to show him. He got really weird then, almost wouldn't touch it. Then he admitted that he only knew about the gun from a video game and he actually passed on some real-world experience because he liked the video version better. He was (is) actually very smart but ... wow. Strangely, I knew his family and he had a highly accomplished shooter/gunsmith in his family I knew well but he preferred games to reality. I mean _I_ like the games too but c'mon.
@@richardgallagher4880 They can be a training tool but not a substitute for real gun handling and live fire. About the only video "game" that is a serious trainer is a FATS simulator and they just don't make that for Xbox.
@@CeltKnight I always think of a police lieutenant? who got shot in a robbery at a gas station. He walked around a petrol pump without checking his angles and got shot. This always reminds me of that incident.

To Point #4, that particular type of cop is made up of a staggering amount of ex-military personnel. It strikes me as anachronistic for veterans, particularly combat veterans, who are under the belief that the Second Amendment only applies to the creating and supply of the National Guard or law enforcement agencies, not to the average civilian. Unfortunately, these people do exist, and are often also law enforcement officers.
If I had to guess, if you were deployed during a war, anyone with a gun was treated as a bad guy. You may even have had ROE that stated anyone with a weapon was considered a combatant and was to be treated as such. It certainly doesn't make that kind of behavior acceptable in any way, but it might explain the warped mindset when it comes to civilians having guns.

There are a bunch I've met personally who were mechanics or other non-combat personnel who hold this view, in addition to some who never left the States. It doesn't make a lick of sense, but it's far more common than it has any right to be.

I can attest to the fact that lint is indeed a problem with pocket carry. After I experienced the problem I now have a schedule for cleaning my pocket carry gun.
My biggest problem is the debris that collects while mowing or running a chainsaw or shredding with a tractor. It's a given to disassemble and clean afterwards
Point One: I LOVE that version of the safety rules - took me overseas many times and works at home and the range. Point Six: When I was old enough, corresponded with the Dirty Harry series of movies. I met a policeman in a parking lot doing some business on the side, and purchased an 8-⅜” barrel, nickel-plated Model 29. I fired it a few times, with no instruction, developed a life-long flinch (that’s another story for another day) and set it aside. Many years later I pulled it out to show someone, and HORROR - I had cleaned it inappropriately when last put away, and the chemical had attacked the metal under the nickel plating and ruined the one side of the revolver in contact with the felt. Sold it for little money as a shooter. Where is that time machine ? EXCELLENT VIDEO !
I would pay money for a still functional gun like that. Would be an interesting talking piece. "Yeah got it from a guy who stored it wrong unknowingly but it looks neat and shoots straight" Had a cool old .22 like that for YEARS with really bad rust on the non bolt side and light rust in on the R side. I blew it up with double charged .22 after I shot the barrel smooth..wasn't a safe queen at all.
This is not super related but it is interesting. I once had a friend that had so little exposure with firearms (not none but she had only rarely even seen guns on tv) that she had to ask me how many guns I keep concealed in my jacket. I told her "only one...?" and she seemed somewhat relieved. Long story short, she didn't know you could reload a gun in the field when you ran out of bullets. This must have come from seeing so many tv characters throw their guns down when they ran empty. I suspect, based on many other interactions with people, there are also a number of people that believe that bullets explode like RPGs and various other misunderstandings. I put no judgement on these people. I just think it is interesting.

Additional note on point 3. Different laws in different jurisdictions can use the same words but define them very differently. Washington and California both have "Assault Weapons Ban" laws but what counts as restricted or banned in each state is very different. Also, there are at least 26 states with some form of permitless carry law BUT many of them have restrictions such as it only applies to residents or doesn't apply to individuals under age 21. Read enough to be sure you know what they mean.
My favorite shotgun is a Browning Auto 5 that's been in my family for decades and owned by 3 generations. I have put a newer barrel with choke tubes in it. I use it for everything. Certainly not obsolete. Not to mention my 1894 30-30 that's 120 years old that I deer hunt with. Just proves your point. Keep it up. Love your content.

I remember in 2011 Taurus had a new Judge they were unveiling at SHOT show that was in 28 gauge. And of course ATF put the brakes on that. Gun laws are just ridiculous.
One thing about movies that cracks me up (besides guns with unlimited ammo) is total lack of recoil. IIRC, Clint Eastwood DID mimic recoil with his 44 magnum. Credit where due.

With practice and good ammunition ( special pointy ammo not necessary) you can cleanly make a shot out past 170-180 yards with a 30/30. I'm guessing the gun magazines put forth the myth that a 30/30 is only effective out to 100 yards.
@@maxpinson5002 - it doesn't much matter. I can't see past 100 yards anymore. Shooting iron sights at paper target at 100 yards, I pointed to the center of the white spot as there was no way I could see the black crosshairs. The spread was 9"x8" on 15 shots. It sucks getting old.
Yessir, it does suck to get old especially on days like today with the weather transitioning from fall/winter-like temperatures back to spring/summer mode. Extremely tough and painful this AM to get up and try to make it to avoid soiling myself and bedding. Still . . . There's only 2 choices. Either you get old or you don't
Paul, thanks very much for an entertaining and educational presentation. From a European perspective, I'd say the 8mmx50R Lebel cartridge from 1886 was the first smokeless powder rifle cartridge. However I am also certain that you already know this and - for the short version - it went without saying that you were talking about hunting ammunition used in the USA. It was also great to see you start off with a nice simple version of the four basic safety rules. Here in the UK I was taught to always check whether or not a firearm was loaded, before handing it to someone else, or when picking one up or receiving one form someone else. I can remember at least two events when that rule helped to prevent a negligent discharge, by discovering live rounds that should not have been present. I think the four basic rules should ensure that any such discharges can only go safely downrange.
