For anybody wondering here are some truck wheelbase specs for the top four truck brands. Widest to Narrowest: Venture Thunder Indy Ace There is about a half an inch from venture to ace with roughly one eighth between each brand. For example thunder and Indy are only about an eighth inch apart. Not as much as people think. Small measurements make big differences. My preference is 14.25WB with indys. Second favourite is 14”WB with venture highs. Once you start changing deck steepness, truck weight, truck height, wheel size wheel weight you get into a mind melting range of infinite possibilities. This is called “the madness”. My advice is, DONT GO THERE! Find what works and stick with it. Only make small changes once in a while. Sometimes it’s better to focus on your skateboarding instead of your skateboard. That’s my two cents.
This shit is history. People will come back to this episode in years to come for reference and the rest. Paul Schmitt is a living legend and his contribution to literally every single facet of the the action and motion of skateboarding is undeniable. Best dude. Skateboarding.
The way rog puts so much thought into landing a trick at almost 50 years old!! Love hearing his thoughts and feeling his dedication. Health and Happiness everyone!
Literally was just talking about the professor and how crucial and awesome he is to skateboarding and how he is probably the last of his breed since big corporations are now going to have their money and interest in the sport. 3 HOURS!!!!! HOOO HEEE!
@@jakeambrosia5126 exactly my point. any new tech will be a guarded secret with restrictions on reproducing it and owned by the corporation instead of the engineer.
Paul needs to speak with the bones bushing people, their instructions explicitly say you don't need the washer at the bottom throwing off countless people's truck geometry.
YES!! Bones bushings do not work with indy trucks. If you put the stock indy bushings beside the bones you’ll see the bones are taller and changes the angle of hanger. If you want different bushings for your Indys get some of the Indy bushings. I ride the Indy blues on 159 and blacks on a 169. 👍🍻
Met him once with his daughter and he was so cool to us. His knee was hurting like hell and he was still insisting on answering any questions my pals had.
Ride the best fuck the rest idk what these guys are thinking lol jk. I have had every truck other then royal's and Indy to me is the best to each there own tho.
Professor S almost validated Roger’s lust for bearing spacers but stopped short or mentioning that manufacturing tolerances for wheels can be off enough that the spacers don’t fit perfectly causing unbalanced pressure on the bearings.
I've been eagerly anticipating Paul's return to the Nine Club. Absolutely fascinating stuff, even though it can get very difficult to follow at times due to the archaic US measurement system. It's hard to overstate this man's importance in the world of skateboarding.
Listening to Roger engineer his boards is like seeing Formula 1 teams engineer their car setups constantly with little winglets and reshaping the wings stuff
If only Professor would validate roger’s love for bearing spacers even if the manufacturing tolerances of wheels, could mean spacers make things worse by putting pressure in the wrong way.
@@AnttiBrax you typed a useless comment and don’t even understand that for spacers to work they need to fit absolutely perfectly. Given wheels aren’t always exactly the same inner dimensions for those spacers, and spacers themselves can be off in size and even different sizes across brands the fundamental benefit Roger talks about doesn’t always work because each part needs to fit exactly correct down to the tenth of a mm. You’re welcome for the education.
I removed my hangers, and put two drops of sewing machine oil in the pivot cups to get rid of that annoying truck squeak. I thought I'd only watch a few minutes, and was captivated for the whole thing. The Professor is epic!
Best guest ever. Professor Schmitt is so intriguing. I love all the science conversations. Y’all should do one with him and the neuroscientist together!
WTF is that deck with Jesus smoking a J and a black dude eating a watermelon in the background ? It's offensive AF and IT's everything that is right with skateboarding !
Anyone remember New Wave decks??? I had a couple of Baker and Flip decks with it back in 02! When new they slid so F’ing Noice! The waves would chip funny and the ones i had didnt last long but they were interesting. 🤘👽
Paul Schmitt along with the 1985 -86 Schmitt Stix Skate Team( Lucero, Joe Lopes, Monty Nolder) are like family members to me. Xmas of 1986 _ Santa Claus left me Schmitt Stix "Lets Go Skate" VHS tape. This video may not be praised like the Powell vids from the 80s or the classic Santa Cruz vids or the vids that came out 4/5 yrs after these and in my opinion changed Skating overnight : Both H Street vids ( Hocus Pocus and Shackle Me Not) but to me this 30min video was everything to me. If a friend came over back then to my house they would always want to watch it. Always good to see Paul talking boards and to be honest is the guy to go to when. It comes to skateboard decks.. . Oh shit!!! Paul brings up the video in the beginning of the show!!!!
ive recently got my first twin tail deck, while it was good for nollie and fakie flip tricks, it completely eliminated my hardflips out of existence lmao. I learned hardflips on the nose back when a bigger nose than tail was the standard, could never do them on my tail. Brings me to the part where he talked about the meter while the shape can be good or enhance one thing it might take away from another. So the search continues for a deck that I can do all my tricks on.
any curious about the board racks the insta is @nocomplyatx its hard to find, but its in the background of a pic of a little girl in a cowboy hat holding up a spitfire support your skateshop wheel. wouldnt of imagined it the way it is by the way they described it on the show.
I’ve always loved the ‘board setup’ part of the stop and chat but this is taking it to the next level. I feel like I’ve learnt so much about materials, measurements, dimensions, trucks, bushings etc. It’s fascinating and also cool to see Crobs set up and Jerons.
I'd love to see a limited reissue of the Turbine wheels. If for nothing else than to hear what they sound like but I think they'd sell quick especially w/ the way collectors are at this point. I'd love a reissue of those rails too. Nine Club special edition.
I never had skateboard madness just whatever feels good but after this I'm defs gonna be analyzing everything on my board. Thank you professor, this is always such fascinating stuff!!
This actually answered a few of the questions I have searched high and low ex. Grip tape under trucks…thank you guys so much for getting this man on the show!
It's like a billion years later but as somebody who rode those t-lock rails way back in the day ... they didn't work well. They'd slide off boardsliding a gritty curb. That's why they never caught on. They came out a good year to 18 months before rails really went away. That said, those type 2 (the shape he's showing) Schmitt Stix rails with sex bolts (not the t-locks) were the best ever made - to date. The plastic was awesome.
I have a question for Paul. Would it be possible to have decks notched so they mate up to an indexer on the baseplate of a truck so they are always properly aligned with each other? Is the manufacturing precise enough for that to even work?
I'm having a hard time with skaters being surprised by what difference 1/8 (0.125) of an inch makes, since we all can tell immediately if we stand on an 8.0, 8.125 or 8.25 deck. 8.0 feels like a toothpick to me. While on 8.125 I can immediately tell this is great for flips at the park, a 8.25 - 8.5 makes me want to go cruising and just do Ollies, Half Cabs and Rock'n Rolls all day long
At 1:06:31 The Professor mentions a pod cast about a neurosurgeon. Does anyone know the name of the podcast? I couldn’t catch the names. Thanks Sk8 community, I appreciate your help.
What I have to say personally is I feel like back in the day skaters choose boards mostly based off of width. I know I did and that's important but not alone. Wheelbase, length and nose/tail length/shapes kinda in that order. I never used to think about wheelbase until recently and it's amazing how much a quarter inch difference will make. I'm now running the fattest board ever for me a 8.5x31.6 14 wheelbase I forgot the nose tail specs but I like them close if not exact amd they are pretty close. My last board was an 8.25 by 32 14.25 WB and the nose is more larger than tail than my new board. I got new trucks at the exact width also and the new board feels AMAZING in comparison. I liked my last board too but now hate it😂😂 so I ordered 3 more of the same exact deck I'm not messing around hahaha I like the graphic too so that's a bonus. I'm disappointed that santa cruz is made in China tho I thought they where a USA made brand. Also so are independent trucks. That one hurt a bit, too.😢 but the setup is legit. Also with my aging body at 36 as much as I love bones STF wheels, they hurt to ride rough pavement. I always hated soft wheels but decided to give the new bones formula X 99a a shot and I'm glad I did cause damn are they awesome!!! They slide great still, yet have more grip and much MUCH less vibration so I can skate longer and better!!! They're also v6 cut which is unlike me I usually get skinnier wheels but with the 8.5 I figured it wouldn't hurt. It would keep my board a bit more centered by half a cm on a grind and with the 8.5 width I suppose that may help. Anyways, just figured I'd share my recent experiences with set up experimentations!!! I'm so happy with it! Of course bones super 6 ball bearings too! Gotta be fast!!!🔥🤙🤙😜
