Such a great song! Paul Simon is such a great singer songwriter. After his success with Simon & Garfunkel in the 60's, Paul Simon went solo in 1970. He has a huge library of songs such as "Mother & Child Reunion", "Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard", "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover", "Still Crazy After All These Years", "Gone At Last", "My Little Town", "Kodachrome", "The Boy In The Bubble" etc.

A love that! “Face melting harmonies.” In the 90’s Paul Simon did a retrospective of his work in the forum above Madison Square Garden and many people he worked with in the past were there: Dixie Hummingbirds, Phoebe Snow, Ladysmith and Art Garfunkel performed.

That's the Carolina gospel of The Dixie Hummingbirds. He wrote it with them in mind. Classic!

Very catchy indeed, Sarah..Number 1 in less than a month after it's release and stayed in the top 40 for almost 5 months afterwards..It's one of those crossover songs that's likeable by everyone: Backwoods bayou folk, country music lovers, kid rockers and church people alike.Props to the Dixie Hummingbirds for the back-up vocals and to you for picking such a killer number!

Hello and love from Ontario, Canada Sara! A dear friend of mine - Howard Carroll - performed on that song. He was the guitar player and baritone vocalist in a gospel band called The Dixie Hummingbirds. The Hummingbirds are singing the "face-melting" gospel background vocals in this song . Brother Howard passed away in October 2017 in a Philadelphia hospital. He was 92 years old. He was my mentor and an absolute genius. If you get the chance, there are a few videos of The Hummingbirds on RU-vid. Howard is the big man holding the guitar ;)

Check out Paul's duet with Phoebe Snow called "Gone at Last." It's another gospel-flavored hit of his from the early '70s. Wonderful.

Paul Simon knew what good music is.....and this is it. A little up beat gospel? Sure. Why not. He and Peter Gabriel liked to promote 'world-beat music'. So they heard a lot of great music to borrow from.
