Paul Tracy 2002 Indy Controversy

With Team Green, Tracy returned to the Indianapolis 500 in 2002 for the first time since 1995. A late-race caution flag for a crash appeared at nearly the same time he passed Helio Castroneves for what would have been the race lead. This incident proved controversial due to the lack of evidence from camera angles showing whether or not he was ahead of Castroneves. Debate continued on the issue of whether the caution flag was timed to stop a CART driver beating the regulars of the rival Indy Racing League, which is run by Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Tony George. Perhaps as a result of this, he was voted CART's Most Popular Driver Award.

To be honest, if anybody steps on the brakes as soon as they see a caution light, they are asking for an accident. I do think that the fact Tracy drove for a CART team may have influenced their decision.

If I remember correctly, Tony George's explanation was that the yellow flag became active the moment the decision was made to go "yellow" and not when the track lights and yellow flag were displayed. I personally wrote Tony George a letter saying that by his logic, Greg Moore was officially dead the moment he lost control of his car and not when he impacted the wall or when he was legally declared dead at the hospital.

One of the things that caught my attention is something that nobody has mentioned here: Tracy's interview after the race. He claimed that he passed Helio on the backstretch going into turn three, but that couldn't be further from the truth. The drivers had already started to make the turn, and Tracy was barely, if at all, alongside Helio. He didn't pull ahead of Helio until halfway through the turn. His explanation of what had just taken place wasn't accurate at all. I'm not saying this hurts his point, but it definitely doesn't help it.

Sorry, watching this again since a new article came out. You’re exactly right, they were almost out of turn 3 when the pass was completed. The wreck out of turn two was almost stopped and we all know how quick the caution lights comes on at Indy. There’s no way, in my eyes at least, Tracy completed the pass before the light came on.
@DCTib

That's not exactly what he said...he sort of misspoke and sort of corrected it mid-sentence. I emphasize sort of. He said "I passed him on the backstretch...going into 3 I passed him on the outside." I'd toss it up to heat of the moment and live TV... nothing intentional.

I've read a lot of the transcripts of the appeal and to my understanding it was proven and acknowledged by tony george that the pass had been made. but since there was no other governing body than the irl there was no institution to file the appeal at. at that time the war between the irl and cart was white hot, team green was still a cart team so the irl just went on with the call that the race director made and gave the win to castroneves and poor team green had nobody to take their case to.

And gave Tracy an FU in the interview - ba ha - eat it Paul. It was never clear to me how Indy car made the decision. It certainly appeared Helio lifted - either due to the risk of running side by side with Tracy or because he was told there was a caution. So I find it plausible to say Helio won (he backed off due to the caution) but the video evidence in Helio's favor is pretty weak.

Tony George did not cause the split...A Corporate Attempt for Racing Takeover (CART) caused the split. That was his family's property since 1946...They built it and made it what it was..NOT CART.. Which began threatening the Hulman George family in 1979 the same year it was formed.....Quit believing Corporate Newspapers and Television...The same Corporations that owned CART also owned the media..

@luey Hewis No sir you're wrong. Roger Penske himself says you're wrong..CART wasn't even formed until 1979...That very year they threatened the Speedway and Speedway President Joe Clouteur with a complete boycott all the way up to the time trials that May. Paul Newman and Carl Haas and others said they would stop at nothing to get control of the Speedway...The Hulman George family didn't want to have to create another series but their hand was forced in 1995..If you own your own home and had owned it since 1945 would you allow outsiders come in your home and tell you they were taking over??? If you would, you are a fool..Penske was one of the first to come back and has often said the split was a mistake.... One by one the Cart people came back including Paul Newman...Cart Folded..The Cart people accepted the new IRL rules and they now Love them. The superior racing you see today is because of the IRL rules and car specifications that everyone formerly with Cart has now adopted. There are no plans to change..Many of George's key people are in their same jobs under Penske.
@richarddobson3138
@richarddobson3138 3 года назад
@luey Hewis Another thing...Corporations attempt takeovers all the time..They also own the media. Quit believing everything they say..They want to control, especially control what had become and still is the largest one day paid Spectator sporting event in the world, and had done so long before they arrived..Roger Penske now says the fabled 25/8 rule was correct and George was justified in creating it as he was trying to keep control of the property the Hulman George family had owned since 1945... Did you ever wonder why after the split that suddenly Nascar took off and began gaining so much ground?? Its easy...The Corporations that tried to take over the Speedway and failed decided on a new plan.. They flooded Nascar with Corporate Money along with massive Corporate advertising and much Increased favorable media coverage while at the same time giving the Indy 500 all the bad press they could

Most tend to forget that in 2002 they introduced a new method to communicate to the drivers of yellow flag conditions... With a warning light on the dash. But this wasn't official. The official timing still went by the lights/flag stand warning the drivers. The accident between Redon and Lazier didn't cause the flag to instantly coming out. The lights on the dash came on before the track condition went yellow. The pass was made before the flag stand switched the condition lights to yellow. Helio lifted the moment the lights on the dash came on. BUT THIS WASN'T THE OFFICIAL YELLOW. The declared winner should have Tracy. Why wasn't it? Politics, that's why. Heaven for bid a CART driver won the 500. Penske was back under the IRL banner.

In my opinion, Helio let off when he saw the yellow. Clearly when he lifts, you can see his speed change in comparison to Paul. At that point, Paul was clearly ahead. So Helio's actions, by lifting, indicates when the race went yellow. At 4:01 of this video, watch, as Helio lifts. Tracy was clearly ahead at that point. Also at around 3:41, Tracy clearly completed the pass, indicating he was already ahead prior to that time frame as it took time to complete the pass.

I don't think this was as much about Tracy being cheated as it was about having very bad luck. If the crash had not happened at that moment, he would have passed for the lead because Helio was conserving fuel. But that's racing.

@georgfriedrichhandel4390

It's really too close to call Eric. Helio has insisted that the only reason why Tracy had passed him was because Helio had slowed down because of the caution, something that I find a little hard to swallow because when two drivers are locked in such a close duel, they're going to be too focused on their driving to immediately respond to a caution. The Indy 500 has one bad practice and that is it never changes the official results (the closest it came was in 1981) and that is why Tracy's appeal was ultimately denied.
@georgfriedrichhandel4390

Great question. I think they looked at those cameras also but they decided that they were inconclusive to render any reliable decision. It's what they would say in the NFL as "too close" to overturn a decision.

And the light is NOT on." That's actually not true. If you have a chance to look at a higher resolution version of the same video, you will see the yellow light by Lazier's wrecked car already blinking. But that still doesn't "timestamp" the exact moment the light came on.

Can't believe so many miss the point of this. I am a Paul Tracy fan, but the rule says, "you go back to the scoring of the prior lap" when the yellow comes out so whether he got around him or not doesn't matter. This is Indy car's answer to the stupid "Lucky Dog" rule of Nascar. The point is when the yellow comes out we go back to the prior lap so we don't have guys racing hell bent into trash on the track or into disabled cars.
@mathscripter333
@mathscripter333 6 лет назад
That is patently untrue. Paul Page (the announcer) pulled that false rule out of his ass. There has never been "racing back to the flag" a'la NASCAR. USAC's rule-book from the late 1970s froze the field once the yellow was displayed. The IRL adopted this same rule when it jettisoned USAC after the 1997 Indy 500 debacle.
@cnon.
@cnon. 6 лет назад
+Richard Mourdock Nobody's missing anything, that rule was not in play/irrelevant. Brian Barnhart and Tony George confirm it was their judgement call based on the timing of the yellow, they simply did not recognize the pass being made before caution and stuck to it.
@mikebronicki6978
@mikebronicki6978 6 лет назад
Other than looking at video evidence what do we have? Immediately after Tracy's pass Castroneves is screaming "he passed me under yellow, he passed me under yellow!" Once out of the race car Helio stated that the yellow light came on in his car and he let off the gas, which allowed Tracy to complete his pass. It is clear the crash came before the pass, the controversy is in how long did it take for the yellow to come out. In theory it should be immediately.

We were sitting at the front of T3 grandstands when two men wearing what looked like those Honeywell, cap-mounted dielectric ear muffs and holding hand-held radios walked to the front and one of the guys tossed a large can of Fosters beer onto the track. The other guy radioed something back and they turned and walked back toward the exits. That large can of beer came to a rest at the apex of T3 which caused an extra lap of yellow on lap 180 - might have been a concerted effort to extend the fuel window of #3. It always struck me and my two brothers attending the race as very suspicious.

What exactly did the rules say on the matter? Tony George claims the yellow is deemed thrown when the decision to throw it is made, not when it is actually thrown. If that is true, then PT was indeed behind at that moment. If TG's claim is not true, then we would need to check the rules as to when the yellow is deemed to be thrown. Is it when the flag is a shown at the startline, or when the lights come on? They won't be at precisely the same moment, therefore the fact that the yellow lights were not on when PT had made the pass may not be conclusive, as the flag may have come out first.

Why is that upsetting 2 reasons #1 the green light was still on the track & #2 1981 Bobby Unser broke the rules passed cars illegally out of the pits. So officials ruled after the race he broke the rules & they gave Mario Andretti the win. So Penske appeals & they ruled he violated the rule but they gave Bobby Unser the win back & fined him & Penske 250k. Now how was that appealable #1 & #2 he broke the rule clearly. My 3rd point is then years later how come Tracy his protest wasn’t appealable????? PT argument based on the yellow flag, while race official based on time of accident. If u see the accident in front of you, for sure whether yellow has been raised (there's delay) or not, you won't pass. But this accident happen on the other side of the track so there's no way you can see them, so he purely based on yellow flag which raised late. I don't know what is the rule for this. Based on final decision, it looks this's based on time of the accident....even though it's happen on the other side of the track.

Question: Does the yellow track light flash or is it constant? If it is constant, there is no question whatsoever that Tracy passed Helio before the light came on (ie: full race footage). Yup, he probably got burned. Helio was an IRL driver for Team Penske (also beloved by fans and indy community), whereas Tracy was a Champ driver and a known hothead with a ton of wrecks. This could have and should have been easily resolved by officials before the drivers even reached the pits.

Yes I agree 100% everything you said everybody but everybody keeps arguing that it’s the time of the accident no it’s never been the time of the accident when the yellow comes on is when you slow down I don’t care if somebody in my helmet and says there’s a wreck until that light comes on you do not slow down that’s what I think happened Helio probably slowed down because somebody in his helmet said there’s a wreck and he automatically slowed down you never do that you wait till you see the light

People I feel sometimes forget how great a driver Paul Tracy was. In 1993 with Penske he was mixing it with drivers like Mansell and Fittipaldi was a title contender as a young driver in what was a golden age of CART. Obviously he got cheated of this 500 win in 2002. I wonder how much more successful he would have been had Penske had kept him on board. Either way he had an awesome career.

I've always thought that Tracy shouldve won this race but if they're scoring it from the previous lap then it doesn't matter how many replays we see of the timing of the pass, it means nothing. And i hate it. Is it anything to do with him being a champ car driver - or was this the reason he was in champ car and not irl?

The version I’ve seen of the race, Paul Page almost immediately declares that scoring goes back to the previous lap. If that was the written rule back then. Tracey doesn’t win. I know other racing organizations go back to the drivers position at the exact moment the yellow light comes on. So apparently the rule was the previous laps scoring?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong (goes without saying here in the comments ;) After examination of the relevant facts, I believe it was determined that the disparate nature of the existing system to initiate a yellow indication was the issue that created this mess. This resulted in the cockpit yellow illuminating prior to the catch-fence yellow. 1.) Accident occurs 2.) Local trackside officials observe the accident and call for the caution. 3.) Officials in Race Control concur and initiate the "Indication of Caution". 4.) In-car Yellow indicators illuminate. - - - 4a.) Helio sees his cockpit Yellow and lifts. - - - 4b.) Tracy passes Helio 5.) Fence mounted indicators change status from Green to Yellow. And if I recall correctly Race Control stated that there was a brief physical latency between the two types of indicators due to two separate steps or buttons, mouse clicks, etc. They stated the Delphi In-Car indicators were a separate system than the fence mounted Track Status lights. Anyone know or remember any differently? fwiw; I was seated in 3 row 1 sec 1 when this occurred. I'm a big PT fan as well, and this ordeal sucked. Barry Green took quite the hit, ... however it ultimately created the path into team ownership for Michael. And at the time I clearly remember being so happy about the few Champ Car drivers/teams returning to IMS.

PT won that race. It was the 3rd year that CART teams were allowed to compete and the 3rd time a CART team won the race as sanctioned by the IRL. Little known is that PT was going to decline the milk and have a Big Gulp from his sponsor, Seven Eleven. CART volunteered and provided the attorneys for Team Green. Tony made a deal for Barry to buy his yacht. By Mid-Ohio Andretti-Green was already a part of the IRL. The IRL, a sad day for the IMS and AOW. Tony George's billion dollar blunder.

this is ridiculous, no matter what motorsport it is, you have to back off under yellow flags. A great example of the opposite on top of this is Fernando Alonso at the 2003 Brazilian GP. Ahead of him, Webber had a big crash on the start/finish straight leaving debris across the tracks. yellows had been out for at least 15 seconds, yet Alonso didnt slow down. He hit the debris and crashed out, injuring himself, and forcing himslef to miss the next race

Uncle Bobby handed Mario his ass all day in that race. If Bobby had been penalized in the race he had a fast enough car to run down and pass Mario. It was BS to pull the win when BOTH drivers passed cars under yellow. Bobby passed more but they both did it. No way was that a "valid" protest when the rule was unclear and unenforced during the race.

@@jimbosc No question Uncle Bobby had the car AND maybe one of his all time greatest drives but the thing is, he was so dominant he didn’t need to do it and as far as Mario, you know it was, if he’s doing it I’m doing it.
