So so true!! Massive respect to PVD for telling it like it is and not adopting the new current fad like other artists such as Armin and Tiesto. This guy is true to his scene and genre and you have to respect him as an artist for that!!
So Paul van Dyk, one of my favorite recording artists, dislike something I dislike? Awesome! We both have something in common, and I respect him for it.
I agree with him. I can't stand dance pop music that usually "made" by some shitty singer who does not write their own songs, has to have their voice altered and 50% is just dance beats where they are not even singing.
Haha I have to admit, I love all music, but Paul really knew what he's talking about when concerning pop music. I'd call him a hipster even, but I mean that in terms of a lovable comment than a dismissal. He's been in the Electronic music scene for as long as I can remember and he has a right to speak against the sort of pop-goes-edm culture
afrikarissa92 It's not about the artists involved, it's about the actual MUSIC. The beauty of remixes is that you can take something that may suck but certain elements, (vocals, drums etc), may have potential. You can then release that potential with better instrumentals, a better beat and synths etc etc. When he says he doesn't want to be associated with the pop culture he means with the SOUND, not the names of the artists like Britney. If the remix he made was his style of true electronic then he is not associating himself with the sound of pop music, if anything he's hopefully introducing good elec/dance to the pop culture who may come across his remix
I like danceable pop, but somebody does need to stick with electronic music and preserve it for future generations. The classic trance style is awesome, I hope it never dies.
he was talking about commercialism. I don't think he wanted to use that word. He is talking about Artists who used to make R'n'B(example) who are now making "Dance" music because it became more popular. The thing about Paul Van Dyk is, he has been making Electronic music for over 2 decades now. He started with electronic music, and he is still continuing his passion with the same type of music. I think a person who created and developed electronic sounds for over 20 years has something to say..
you really touched somes important points, those two genres are totally diferent. there are some tracks which you may sometimes have two listen more than twice in order to capture its soul
I agree!!! Sasha is most definitely GOD! He's one of the originators and innovators of the genre. Everything that is popular now came AFTER Sasha. His new single Cut Me Down (feat Krister Linder) is one of the best pieces of music I have ever EVER heard. In fact, it's probably the best work he's done and I'm shocked he still has it after all these freaking years.
Its more than just what background the artist has, its how broad of a stroke that the music tries to paint. How docile and easily digestible the music tries to be. What is missing is edge, something that takes you out of your comfort zone and shows you something awesome you wouldn't have seen otherwise. Big label trance producers have been trying for years to change trance into a sound that fits the mold of what is socially acceptable to listen to. Every genre of music falls victim to this.
I agree with @K4tic I seen PVD every year in Ibiza anmesia from 87-2003 and his music was inspiring. What a buzz in there listening to him throw out some quality tracks. I would say his first real commercial track was around 2002 called Nothing but you and it was such a good atmospheric track. Since then his sets has changed and his sound became a little harder than normal and his productions have not progressed much. So although i prefer the old pvd i still appreciate his style & quality h
the techno/trance-era from 1992 - 2004 was probably the last youth culture on earth: there was the sense of being together and dancing to spheric and melodic tracks, wearing bootcut trousers and buffalos. this kind of spirit has vanished. even in these days electronic music was "commercial" but still to differentiate from the ordinary pop music as there WAS a strong club & youth culture. nowadays the mainstream-pop has wiped out a lot of good stuff.
Just like in Portugal!!! We don't have a trance scene... Only a few nice summer goa / Psy festival's! PvD came to Portugal i guess in 2006!!! Noboby went to see the leader of the trance nation =/ just like Dj Tatana & Tiesto in 2004 and Scooter in 1998 =/ People don't know what is electronic music nowdays
paying for articels is the normal way it´s done in the whole music scene. I think nearly everyone has done this. I was shocked the first minute when I see the headline... but as I continued the articel it became much much better. :) It´s just the common thing ^^
Just finished downloading it. Not a bad album, yes I support him but I ain't paying $40 for it. He should be happy that people actually want to get it and listen to it.
I think Matt Lange is from Berklee too. He's an amazing producer, but he doesnt do a lot of publicity etc. But tango isnt as mainstream as EDM, and regardless of what happens anymore, PvD has earned a huge fan following that'll stay with him till the day he lives. He was doing well before the Grammy, and he wouldve continued to do well without it, but my reply to beatsanctuary was for the "being able to sustain themselves" part. Your friend, is he only a sound engineer or a Producer/DJ as well?
couldn't agree more with paul on this. electronic music is going mainstream. now every little kid loves "EDM". Ask them who Paul Van Dyk, Sven Vath and Carl Cox are and they have no idea.
if you know PVD, you know there is a ton more coming from this album. His initial releases are never the final product. check re-reflections, in between, etc.
His new album is Trouse which sounds a lot like "danceable pop" to me, I dont know maybe Im missing something. At least when I see him live he still plays good trance(even though he refuses to call it that). Aly and Fila have got it figured out PVD, Its all good go make your trousy money.
You know I'm right, oh and btw I love all kinds of different trance, Psytrance, dark trance, hard trance, I also like House, DNB Breaks and just about anything with integrity. . Basically trance that can put me in a trance and not put me in the mood to go shopping. Trance 2.0 is to trance what Guetta is to house.
nobody is g-d, it was a figure of speech, and i understand what you say, I may not be listening to van dyk these days but from time to time I find he still has the touch and a nice taste. I thought you were one of those MTV zombies loving fake producer Guetta but now i see you know about music.
I totally agree with PVD here. I get so angry inside when people say LMFAO, Rhianna etc are just like the music I listen to (AVB, PVD, Heatbeat, Ferry Cortsen) and I honestly want to punch them in the mouth. But its not their fault really. They just don't understand the genre and they think when they hear an upbeat tempo that its trance music. It makes me want to gag everytime I hear Usher and his new bullshit. But thats really only here in America. Other countries seem to know the difference.
I'd like to know the category he won the award in. My guess is Comedy/Spoken Word/Musical Theater/Crafts. The non-mainstream artists do have to struggle a lot, since everyone with a laptop is a Producer these days. But this year, when they gave the Grammy to Skrillex, it made me doubt the authenticity of this award.
Paul van Dyk one of the gods of trance and hes telling the trough, many of the second grade shit producers like Gueta weren't even born when this guy was playing electronic music and still plays sounds true to its spirit, while others pimp them self for commercial dance crap. I love Tiesto but look at his sets in 2005 and up and then look recently ...and its sad. And bitw the dub step crap in trance sucks hopefully it will die soon.
Please dont compare people like Prydz who understand progressive house to people like Arty. Arty changed his style to sell more and become more popular.. DEAL WITH IT!!
He speaks gospel truth. Dubstep I believe is just an awkward hybrid of Jungle and DnB accept with Dubstep there is no particular fluidity to it. Whenever it comes on at clubs I can't help but scratch my head and wonder "how do you dance to this?" Unless people are slow Matrix dancing the whole time I don't get it. Dubstep fans please if you want true Electro listen to DnB or Jungle. England was successful with the Rock sub-genre Punk, but with this Dubstep...ehhh...not so much.
People don't understand that the evolution of electronic music involves the convergence of styles and the emergence of electronic music in pop which deals with universal cultural evolution like it or not. There is an exclusive vibe that comes out of Paul's sentiment that doesn't make sense.
you know I have to agree with you. I used to listen to hs music.. it was before he got "famous". He used to qualify to good and respected dj's in the world, now he is just a joke. He plays music with Niki Minaj and other singers-rapers who dont have idea about what electronic music is... now these days its all about the $. Its sads to watch how art of electronic music dies :(
Yup, you're missing something. It's not a crime to blend elements of different genres thats how a lot of new EDM genres were born in the first place. New fresh sounds are a good thing not a bad thing. Music should move forward not get stuck in same place.
You have to be joking. He's a legend and has created numerous amounts of songs. His new stuff is called progressive. Something you wouldn't know about. Because your stuck in the past.
Yeah,he is,but he is popular only in the electronic music scene and there is nothing wrong with that!If you ask some common person who just listen to mainstream this person will not know who is Arty!
basically, I would say its not danceable popmusic. there a good popartists who has electronic elements in their songs and kind of influence of that. on the other hand there is just commercial dance music that is now being made, by Guetta, GaGa, Pitbull and the former RnB and Hiphop "stars" like Taio Cruz, Rihanna etc for the huge american area cause actually rnb, hiphop and rap don't function there anymore, it's dead. you can compare it to german dance music culture we had back in the 90s.
I completely agree with PVD, there are so many pop artist( Rihanna, David Guetta, and Nikki Minaj) that all have this electro background music going on, but this is definitely not anything related to electronica music, I hate them, and the reason people only like this is because it is your typical bullshit artist that you hear everywhere, whether it is theatres, streets, radio or work, and people are not unique and just want to "fit in" if that gets across my point.
@K4tic Saw him live a million times prior to 2003, then he became pure fluff, even though his double cd album from 2-3 yrs ago was awesome. PVD had a good sound in the 90s
What defines if a song is commercial or not is the background not how it sounds! Will I am steal Rebound!I know many many underground progressive house that sounds simillar to Avicii bullshit, but it is not commercial!I am not going to listen track if it´s background is commercial!
basically he failed to make it in the 'third genre" of music which he was trashing in this interview calling it "danceable pop music.......when he released the song white lies with Jessica Sutta. It wasnt that big of a hit, so now hes trash talking the genre. Dont get me wrong, i personally cant stand the shit guetta and afrojack put out and most of what avicii puts out but this is PVD being hypocritical. I'm glad he actually decided to make a track like "the ocean" with arty which is trance.
