Paul Weller Interview. Paul talks Bands splitting up, reforming or staying together @statusquocom @PaulWellerHQ @thejam3552 #statusquo #thejam #paulweller
He's knows exactly what they're asking him, but he's always going to say no. And I'm gutted that that's the case. Rick and Bruce would say yes in a fucking heartbeat and he knows it.
My tuppence-worth is that Weller got to the point in 1983 that he thought he was bigger than The Jam & didn't want to share the lime-light or the financial rewards with Buckler & Foxton any more, so he ditched the act, & then he found out that actually he wasn't. But he's not going to admit it because it makes him sound like an egotistical idiot at the time
to be fair the Jam's sound evolved a lot over time and the Style Council took this way further. Not saying he was right to ditch Bruce and Rick though..
I’m with Weller on this, that every band as it’s time, moment, peak whatever you want to call it. I’m a massive roses fan but was to young to see them the first time, went to Heaton park and felt totally let down, not that the gig was bad or anything like that, but I was wanting spike island or the empress ballroom and it was never going to top that, I missed the peak of the roses and you just have to accept it. Now luckily I witnessed oasis and the verve and a lot of other great bands from the mid 90s, and this is what I’m trying to get to, I hope to fuck that oasis don’t reform, the younger lads won’t like me for that but trust me, it will never be oasis at their peak from 94-97, you have to let it go, and hope to god you have a great band that’s just around the corner that your gonna catch in the moment, mind you with the state of today’s music I can’t see that happening any time soon
Yes, break up but stay friends. Noddy Holder said that his greatest sadness is that the four members of Slade can't sit 'round a dinner table together.
You could apply the "Triggers Broom" principle to some bands. For example, The Sugababes. Started wit the 3 original members, then one left and replaced. The remaining 2 original members then left and we replaced. So then you have a group that has no original members left but still going by the same name and singing the same songs as the previous line-ups. Thankfully, that particular broom has been sorted and original 3 members got back together and fought to get their name back (they were performing / recording under the name "MKS").
