I want to live in the timeline where Paul is a household name, widely respected for his songwriting skills, and put on the pedestal that pop stars are.
i listened to this when youtube first started gaining popularity in college and acoustic sets were just getting added to the medium. Things like MTV unplugged AiC etc....only people that really wanted to share something beautiful put forth the effort because there was no money in it...kind of like the internet was in 93-95. The people that matter live in the timeline you describe. It isn't indie, it is pop culture but it is the popular culture that values heart and not dollars.
I never appreciated this song back when I first heard it. Since then I've listened to an enormous amount of music, only to find that... Yes, Paul was and is the best there is and this song is golden.
Not only is this a great song that never gets any credit...This Jools Holland TV show was the best music show around, and it got cancelled. What an odd world we live in.
Only if one is as cool as Paul and as capable of writing so much great music can you sabotage your career and still be one of the most influential songwriters of your generation. They don’t have a word for that kind of thing.
Not only a great version, but a rare perfect live version from Paul. He actually looks like he is interested in nailing it. Would love to know the open tuning and chords he is using on this.
I'm almost positive Jools made a mistake with his introduction. Paul came on the show right after he released 14 Songs in 1993; however, as far as I know, The Replacements were never featured.
Yeah it seems he forgot that awesome 1993 appearance but technically the members of that band were replacements to The Replacements. Maybe ol Jools was being cheeky
@leminyelloblak Very true.If the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame had any sense, they'd put The Replacements,Husker Du and The Pixies in there.Just to name a few..
He loves the word Misanthropes ! mis·an·thropeˈmis(ə)nˌTHrōp,ˈmiz(ə)nˌTHrōp/nounnoun: misanthrope; plural noun: misanthropes; noun: misanthropist; plural noun: misanthropistsa person who dislikes humankind and avoids human society.
The Mats were on Old Grey Whistle Test which was the precursor to Jools' show but I think he was being cheeky in that the guys in Paul's band were replacements to The Replacements in their 1993 performance
I like the studio version better. This one is faster and loses some of the feeling. Sometimes slower is more powerful. Still an amazing song either way.
Paul Westerberg’s contribution to musical lyricism and sound could never be over-estimated. His place as an inspiration to other artists will always be underestimated and should be considered an icon to musicians everywhere. Unfortunately he ruined it and could have been in the rock n roll hall of fame if he really gave himself a shot back in his prime.
A lot of his songs sound the same structure and tone wise but each has it's own story, they're all good stories with mostly sad characters but that's what draws us Paul fans in so tight. He tugs on those heartstrings just right
