ERIC HEROD It's in my top five. The other openers are the following: 4) Michael Jackson--1993 3) M.C. Hammer--1991, 1992 2) Bruno Mars--2016 1) Lionel Richie--1984, 1985
@@jamesdavidkmoss Jlo, Beyonce, Rihanna, and more are crap in comparison. In the last 15 years or so, female dancers all they do is shake and hump and fondle themselves and their fans call it "talent." They are pieces of crap. In this video you can see the difference between those of 2000's+ crap dancing and Paula's actual amazing talented dancing. They should learn from both Paula and Janet's dancing: they would learn A LOT.
I was a seat filler for the AMAs that year. Just being in the same building as her! I wanted to be her so badly. Three years after this, I took my first dance class and performed on stage. 16 years later, I performed my first halftime show at a Lakers game. Dreams. I had them.
What!?? ❤❤ dang I still remember Janet Jackson on there even when the new kids on the block who I was obsessed with that year one of those two awards and got booed by the guys up on in the balcony. That’s very cool. You got to see that performance in person too bad no smart phones back then.
This performance is epic! No over the top fancy stage props, no booty shakin' or grinding legs ... but in fact, pure artistry as it's finest. Simply flawless!!!!!!!
@@edphil6073 I think everybody gets your unnecessary point. But the point that a lot of us are trying to make is on her dance performance and in my honest opinion, she did a dynamite job.
I could watch this over and over again. The creativity in that choreography and the dancers are amazing. Paula was on top of her game. She won an Emmy for this with Michael Darrin who choreographed it with her.
@@edphil6073 that's a lie. She did sing live on multiple occasions. But you can't find but a handful of artists who are true dance artists singing completely live when they're dancing hard. To downplay her as an artist because she does not have as much talent on the vocal side as she does the dance side is trivial and intellectually dishonest. This comment thread was about her choreography, so your insecurities jumped into a comment section to point out something that was not even of subject in this comment section. To try to find something of weakness in someone you see with so much talent and ability is just some weak way to try to make yourself feel better. Most artists again who focus on the dance side sing completely track free, but she spent her entire tour singing live.
@@ayanp353right! That person keeps complaining about her vocals in yet this performance is 33 years ago and second of all yes Paula was a better dancer than singer, but she still put on a great performance
her along with a couple co-choreographers one of the guys that pull her up at on the platform at around 0.58 is one of them (dominic lucero) when her and 2 others accepted the award for this they shouted a couple people out for helping
Honestly in my opinion, no other female artists can dance and choreograph better than her yet. She is truly a role model for the new coming young female artist. Brilliant and amazing performance !
Oh there are a SLEW nowadays who are right up there with Paula. She ruled in the late 80's and 90's. These new ones though are a whole different caliber.
Incorrect , today's dancers dont have half the skill that previous dancers have, dancing has changed and gotten lazy artists and people alike do not exude the quality, technique, skills and passion that previous performers displayed, today it's all about tic tock and shaking booty, I'm not old or young I miss watching people like Fred Astaire the Nicholas Brothers Janet Jackson Michael Jackson Bruno Mars Bruno Mars Ciara Chris Brown 2 hottest dances on the planet is the Les Twins now these are dancers and entertainers that can actually dance it's very few and far in between watching Paula Abdul made me miss my teenage years and watching the best performers on stage because we don't get performances like we did back in the seventies eighties and nineties
@@moniquemitchell5092 Amen to that sister. She is bad and very underrated. Her choreography is amazing and a form of art. Nasty is one of Janet's best choreographed videos
Her best live performance!!! Amazing!!! In all her choreographys she was always telling little storys using the whole stage. Compare with her stage choreography for Janet Jackson in 1987 and her performances at the AMA and Grammys. Simply breathtaking. Paula truely set new standards in the 80s!
@@edphil6073for her it does not matter she is a breath taker when it comes to entertaining, and actually she can sing, but back then it was common to lip sing , alot of artists did
this was wen people had the attention spans to watch such a long opening number.. these days they don't have that long and good of openers.... this production number is excellent, fun, and should be re aired..... from back when television is where we got all our music videos
@@justjarod7440 girl please Madonna don't even belong in the same sentence as Paula & Janet there's a big difference between them and Madonna they are queens and Madonna is controversy they hold your attention with their performances Madonna hold your attention with controversy and is extra and overdose stuff and Paula and Janet have 2 do is put out songs &videos and go on tour and show true talent to hold your attention while madonna on the other hand (even though she is legendary and iconic) chooses 2 do stuff like kiss drake Gettin him disgusted
@@tredezclayton3900oh please. madonna is amazing and literally got to start her career and skyrocketed to fame without her first big controversy in 1984 and she did it all with the power of her dancing.
Paula does it old school and serves it up BIG TIME!! All you wanna be's get in line CAUSE MISS PAULA IS IN TOWN. This was when talent was REQUIRED to be in the music biz. My hat is off to you Miss Paula you were a force to be recconned with and left big shoes to fill when you WERE sidelined. GOD BLESS YOU And best of luck on your 2017 tour!
Anthony, I agree! Everything about this live performance is Amazing! From Paula making her entrance in a bubble and her flawless choreography in being in sync with the dancers behind her. I love that Paula is not afraid of heights and still jumps into her dancer's arms today. Even hearing the audience cheer for Paula gives me goosebumps. I Love This Performance! 💙
shes just the very best she did it all janet jackson all dance coreography her own and so many others really i dont even begin to know how she did it and still do after the horrible accident and the horrible pain she is really one and only i hope she is getting all the credits she deserves, being in the hall of fame if you put there kylie minogue who compared to this woman is 0000000 then theres a lot to do for paula abdul her movesare still here and will stay forever look at the snake move , even in movies is being done today shes up there with all of the great ones if not the very first!!!!!!
I have to give Paula so much credit! How did she come up with all these dance moves? Those of us who were alive back then we’re really in for a great treat watching her perform.
Paula Abdul is such an Inspiration! For Her to Choreograph all of that performance right to the Entrance of Anita Baker ... Wow! Truly Amazing! much love Paula, from NZ!
Yes, the whole entire opening of the American Music Awards. Every opening back then was extensive and big till the host comes to the stage. Paula's opening is still my most favorite of all time. And at the Amas... Incredible!! ❤️
And Paula was asked to do so.. choreograph the entire set for that show. Her set was bigger because she choreographed straight thru the whole opening names of artists included. Which makes her's the best. I loved it then, I still love it now!!
...THANKS SOOOOOOO MUCH, for uploading the whole number!!...BEYOND TIMELESS!!....Paula is a SUPER-GODDESS-DELUXE!!...Hey, Millenials, SCHOOL IS IN SESSION!!....
I love some Paula!! Everything on here is on point!!! Paula Abdul knew what she was doing on here. I was born in the '80's around this era of music. I was born in 1986 when music really meant something. I love the women in 80's because they were trailblazers with class. They really inspired me to me create my own choreography when I'm at the club dancing people always compliment me saying that I'm one of the best dancers on the club, I create my own dance moves with the right timing. I pay homage to 80's trailblazers of women that inspired me to do so!! Paula Abdul is on the top of the list along with my girl Janet Jackson!!! I love them JJ & PA along with some other women in this era of class!! Yeahh!!!
Back when real music & artists reigned supreme as did celebrities on shows like these. Oh man the 90s was a time for some good music & shows they need to bring all of this back
My favorite Paula Abdul song, I am still bumping this song in August 2022. The choreography is off the chain!!!!! Paula and her dancers did a phenomenal job in this performance.
omg I remember videotaping this and watching it over and over again to try to teach myself. I was around 7 yrs old and loved her! This is definitely my all time favorite awards show performance. so happy to find it. you just don't see stuff like this anymore.
Anybody complaining that she didn’t sing live on this performance u all need to cut her some slack! First of all this is 33 years ago in 1990 & how do you expect her to sing live and do a high-performance dance sequence like this? This was a phenomenal performance, and she did an outstanding job is the choreographer.
I was ten. Man. No words can describe how hype me and my late cuz was to see this. The award shows were epic!!! Paula Abul I still dance like her. Try too anyway..
I may have commented b4 but she killed it look at the dancers trained professional dancers on point hit every mark spins flips in sync with one another not the continued hip hop moves done in videos today I have nothing but respect for Paula and her talents pure perfection
Thank you for posting the complete opening. I had my mom tape this very show for me and loved rewinding it to see Paulas dancers. They were always the stars of the performance for me.
And Paula was still kicking butt at the Billboard Awards in *2019*. This is not to lay shade on today's choreographers. But back in the 1980-1990 choreographers like Paula (and Toni Bassel and Debbie Allen) had something to work with musically. Not only was the music fun but they had funk and off beats. They also had mentors like Gene Kelly and the Nicolas Brothers and practically all singers had to be able to dance. No one note.By the time Mille Vanilli came into the picture things were already starting to falter.
she did,and because she was paula abdul, she got the best dancers. Everyone wanted to work for her as she was a real dancer, meaning she was a jobing dancer, like the rest
My brother and I we would spend days practices her dancing we would tape on the old VHS recorder play back I think we distroyed the tape playing it so many times. Dancing was everything so my brother and myself.
I love Paula Abdul, and I'm 12 years old. She's an amazing role model (for singers and dancers) and she's an amazing singer and choreographer! I think more people my age should listen to and watch her performances instead of twerking and singing Miley Cyrus pretty much all the time. Also, my favorite dancer of hers is Dominic Lucero! (He's wearing a suit top and grey pants, black hair and is usually beside Paula.)
I am 100% sure that her stage performance at the MTV award show in September 1989 and her various performances of "Straight up" brought her the AMA dance artist award in this show very easily.
