Pavel Haas (1899-1944) was born in Brno in 1899. After basic music lessons, he started to study on newly founded Brno conservatoire. In 1920 Haas changed to the masterclass of Leoš Janáček, became his most important pupil. In twenties and thirties, Haas found himself well known in central europan region. Like many other composers of his generation showed a strong interest in the possibilities of the new medium -- jazz. The german occupation of Czechoslovakia on 15 march 1939 spelt the beggining of the end for Pavel Haas. He was deported to the Terezin concentration camp and later to Auschwitz, where he was murdered (Michael Kube).
In the Wind quintet Haas combines the Janáček-derived method of thematic working and of modality on the basis of Moravian folksong with the characteristic elements of the hymnic melodies of synagogue chant and the polyrhythmic structure of European postwar modernism (Michael Kube).

Pavel Haas (1899-1944) se narodil v Brně, kde také studoval na konzervatoři u Viléma Petrželky a v mistrovské třídě Leoše Janáčka. Ve 20. a 30. letech se etabloval ve známého tvůrce. Stejně jako mnoho jeho generačních souputníků se inspiroval jazzem. Válka jeho dalšímu uměleckému vývoji bohužel učinila přítrž, v roce 1940 byl deportován do Terezína a v roce 1944 dále do Osvětimi, kde byl zavražděn.
V dechovém kvintetu Haas kombinuje Janáčkovu metodu tématické práce s modalitou založenou na principech moravské lidové, stejně jako se synagogálním zpěvem a polyrytmickými strukturami evropské moderny (Michael Kube).
