I was handed down a really nice rifle from my father and I sold it when I was really strapped for money and about to be evicted. It’s pretty easy to make rash decisions when you need to eat lol I’d literally give my left testicle to get that rifle back
People are welcome to sell their stuff on the secondary market on their own. Rick is buying stuff to make money, so of course he’s going to try and get something as cheap as possible.
@@adambill8706 Those millions came from being on one of the most successful TV shows ever thats ran for 20 seasons. Pawn shops go out of business all the time, and regular pawn shops offer less than what pawn stars does. Typically only 1/4 market value.
Seriously that confused me I ended up selling a load of my comics before I started to travel vlog here in Thailand and I SPENT that time finding an average value. Glad I did too, I had an XO gold comic in there that I got 4k off of alone that I KNOW a fool like this guy would have offered me 5 bucks
And that's if it's expensive and fairly easy to sell. The cheaper and harder it is to sell, the lower percentage you're going to get. So many people are like "I bought this guitar for 700 bucks, man!!!" You're going to get 50 bucks for it unless it's a very specific guitar.
I have bargained at a pawn shop where the salesman actually said “well, I won’t get my double on it, but whatever”. They want to at least double what they paid for it. Use that as you may for negotiating.
@@ScottSery they have experts on retainer, prime location and lots of staff. If they gave you $95k for your $100k item they would go out of business pretty quick.
Grandpa: I'm gonna keep the comics for 1000s of years so my children would know the cool stuff. Grandchild : Wow, I'm gonna sell it to go on a vacation
"I'm at the pawn shop because where else ya gonna sell a bunch of comic books?" Oh, I dunno, maybe the comic book store? I could see this being an issue in Marathon TX where the closest comic store is likely 250 miles away in El Paso, but she's already dragged these to a major city that Google shows more than a dozen comic shops in. Even if a comic store can't buy the whole collection outright, they have the connections to at least find buyers for the best stuff and maybe sell the rest on consignment.
I think the pawn stars pitch it as if you auction it, most auction houses take a 25-30% cut... So even if you're lucky and get 75k at auction, it immediately drops to 52k in your pocket... Makes their offers in general seem a bit more reasonable
It is called pawn stars ,folks are taking there stuff there for a reason ,I have to tell you this show is accommodating to the masses cause nobody buys junk like them
$35k really isn’t that bad for starting a offer… You have to think your gonna have $35k wrapped up into an item for a long time to hopefully get $75k in which you will probably pay $20k in auction fees. Also he went up to $43k so
sure but 43 was a decent offer. You don't go to a pawn shop to make a good deal, you go there because you want fast money and you're willing to sacrifice profits for that.
Yeah that one was just outright disrespectful, however rick also knows that it might sit for years and years, and take a lot of effort to get rid of. Like, they say this about anything but this one i can actually understand why rick would say its gonna be a lot of effort to get rid of it.
“This is my uncle’s comic book collection, it was handed down to me. My brother got the other half. I hope to sell it at a pawn shop and take my kids on a vacation” I sure hope her brother got all the best comics!!!
I’d love to see a follow up episode for what items actually sold for in the pawnshop, and also follow up with customers that couldn’t make a deal and whether they’ve since sold the item.
They are a real pawn shop been there and bought confederate money for triple what they said and 7x what they paid, I watched the episode and wanted the item, the ink color from signing states real or fake and buying online you can't verify that. If they buy it then 3-5x cost, account were famous.
For reference, "Hirsch" is a deer or stag in German. The term translates directly as "deer catcher," but they're used to hunt deer and boars (Wildschwein).
I think Chum Lee was totally right about putting the comics out with a $1 a piece sticker. Lots of people go to the store to see the cool stuff, but tourists obviously don't have 30k to drop on a Beatles guitar or something. So, they can easily get a neat old comic for $1.
If I went in and saw the Howard the Duck, I would pay a buck without thinking, just for the trip down memory lane. I feel like what happens is the expert just skips any book worth zero to 3-5 bucks. So those books he says are worth no more than a nickel a piece, probably have quite a few that are worth some small value. Most times when there is a bulk collection, the appraiser doesn't give a realistic value IMO.
Same. regardless my measure of disinterest, if it’s something I can easily fit into a drawer or a safe.. some of these are virtually 1 of a kind items, too. Wild to watch sometimes
Better than throwing it in the trash. You're just prolonging the inevitable, somewhere down the line the sentiment won't carry. You held onto it for nothing.
Not all families unfortunately have true family morals is why. Other times some family members do and others do not. I can't stand my own sister for not having the morals that we both were raised to have towards other family members.
She's super lucky she got 500 for them I've volunteered at a thrift store and they throw away boxes of comics they don't even sell at 5 cents on the floor.
With some comic collections the best thing you can do is get it stolen so your insurance pays the estimate value and not the proper value anyone would pay
Never mind any of the cheap comics she had judging by the age of the comics i`d say its almost certain she had early 80s X-Men there ...if she did 5/6 of them on their own would be more than $500,if she had some of the special X-Men comics in VG condition your talking a lot more... Nearly all the comics i own are from the late 70s to early 80s and i can tell you dealers are only really interested in anything X-Man related but they ARE interested...
My great aunt was a huge baseball fan! She absolutely loved the Toledo Mudhens! And she chewed tobacco! She was a character, but I loved her! Miss you Aunt Sally!
But you could also tell some people exaggerate their price. Notice the first dude wanted 20k but as soon as the expert said 12k he went to 12k. Most others who truly believe their perceived price start at their original asking price.
He's not taking advantage of anyone. It's the sellers choice if they want to sell to him or not. He's a middleman. How much do you expect he should pay?
I love that lame “brother” joke Rick did at 2:56…nobody else laughed and then he just kept going as he got quieter while walking away lmao .. I can just smell the awkward
I think we’ve all had moments like that 🤣 you make a joke and nobody laughs so you try to salvage it by going on with it only to dig yourself a deeper hole
I'm not even Catholic yet the idea of selling not only a gift but an outright commendation from none other than THE POPE seems incredibly insolent to me. I'm glad it wasn't worth a lot of money; the man should be embarrassed.
I mean, Pope Francis himself gave it to the man, as a gesture of respect to the man's father and his body of work. There is undoubtedly a photograph of the medallion being presented. So why not prepare a collage of the father's most outstanding photos, and include the papal medallion and the photo of it being presented? That's what I would do.
I'm glad that guy who brought in that tiara walked away, the guy said if he sold that tiara in his shop he would sell it for $ 75,000 and he o ly offered him $ 30,000, screw you Rick, if I was that guy, I would sell it to that guy who owned that jewelry store
to be fair, they would probably give you a poor deal too. They pay you pennies compared to their value just to help you get rid of the entire collection then sell the good ones for 10 times what they gave you for it to compensate for the ones with little to no value.
I read that the tiara were bouight by pawn stars, they sold it to a museum for 43K, and Rick donated 40 to the Epilepsy Foundation and Epilepsy Foundation of Nevada. So, hats off to Rick for that.
Okay, this is the first time I've ever heard him say "no the offer doesn't stand when you come back". For what I've seen, he's always said "hey if you change your mind, the offer stands! You can always come back"
Yeah I was surprised there tbh. It is a lot of money but that episode with the rare guitars indicated clearly they could always come back. Maybe it's cause there's more people willing to buy guitars than tiaras?
Love how many people go to a middle man and expect him to give them full value. And then these people go on to something like an auction and realize how much they actually cost the sellers, and realize that they could've taken the offer from here and had less stress.
Less stress is the key....pawn shops buy your things right away but at their price. So you can have a few bucks on you really fast.... Then they have the stress, trouble and work of the item. You just get your money and go home happy
If these people had the means or know how to sell it for what its worth they wouldn't be bringing it to a pawn shop in the first place, The shop still has to make money after all and that might mean sitting on it for months or years before they get someone to buy it or they might decide to auction it and that means they may end up losing money anyway,
It is a great hobby, little pricey at times but also a lot of good cheap stuff. The post crisis Captain Atom run is solid and pretty much the most expensive book is #42 for like 30 bucks
As someone who collects comics. hearing them called "recycleable paper" just made me want to cry a little bit. I can't tell you how hard it can be trying to track down issues missing from my collections because so many people think they're just junk and trash them. :( I mean. I know comparatively they aren't worth much. But I love my New Teen Titans from the 80s. They're kind of like time capsuls. There are certain issues I would LOVE to find. And I've got certain issues you'll have to pry from my corpse.
@@vintagethrifter2114 I mean. I guess you could say that? But I wouldn't. It's not like I collect them because they're rare. I just love the stories. I get joy in having the art and the stories. I mean. I collect modern issues too as they come out. I get plenty of joy from them even though they're 'dime a dozen'. There's just something about flipping through soft faded pages and looking over old advertisements that makes holding and reading old comic books a really different experience than just reading the digital copies. And like I said--I don't really have any high value issues. Just what I've found at the local comic shops and some old antique stores. I'll admit, I'm a really big nerd though. So maybe that's just a me thing. Not sure how it works for other comic collectors.
Really cheesy of that guy trying to pawn off that medal that honored HIS OWN FATHER by none other than the pope. People see dollar signs in everything.
Most of the time Rick is saying that there's not much of a market for it to get it cheaper but this time he was absolutely right. Maybe someone Rich might wonder along and buy it but I think Rick would have it on his shelf a very long time.
yeah he brought a high value item to a pawn shop expecting top dollar 😂😂... he sure did get the "best" of rick tho. 43k$ was more then a fair price for that...
@@whoswho7815 Where do you see that? They had an expert go through them all, and found a few that were OK, but the 'majority' were absolute crap... 1. The Gold & Silver Pawn Shop is not a comic book shop, so they are not going to display comics that are worth only a couple of hundred bucks. 2. Most of the books weren't even in plastic... Do you really think that any of them were in "mint" condition? 3. There were no "gems in the rough" in the entire collection... Nothing worthy of the Pawn Shop putting out on display
