I'm guessing this guy stored the book in a place that either maintained high humidity, or flat out got flooded. He really "oversold" that maybe it was "weathered" when Rick said "no, it got WET". And when Rebecca said $12,000 and he immediately came down to $8000? No, he knew the book was damaged and needed a quick sale. Afterwards, when he said it was time to "cut his losses" confirms my suspesions, at least in my opinion.

I remember watching the episode when he had the guy come in with an Avengers comic and he said "I am taking a risk on the success of the next movie" like it really takes a genius to figure out that these AAA movie are gonna do well considering Hollywood has been saturated with superhero movies for over 10 years now...doesn't take an expert to connect those dots and he still low balled the price on that comic lol.
