Rick : I can understand but I have to get out from the shop, Get a taxi, file a police report .. its going to cost me a lot of money . It's a huge gamble
Nothing was worse for rick then to hear that the 2 paintings by Rick Haring were each worth $50,000 AND they were framed already so he couldnt use the framing as an excuse.
That's thing when you work in a pawn shop, you do not need excuses. They come to you. Don't like the price? Go somewhere else for your desperation cash.
Rick cracks me up. When hes buying something of historical significance its "oh not alot of people know what it is so heres my lowball offer" When hes selling something of historical significance its "oh this was literally a sword from the 18th century Im asking $45,000" How so convenient 🙄
That part killed me! Your grandfather specifically said never to sell this coin. It is a family heirloom he passed on to you.... why the f*** would you hock it at some Las Vegas pawn shop?!?
Fun fact about Pawn Stars: Whenever someone comes into the shop with something really cool, Rick will ask them if they wanna be in an episode and give them a date to come back on. This is done so that they can coach the seller into how to act in front of a TV camera and to avoid other issues. When they are filming the shop is closed and the place is flushed of everybody except the extras.
And the guy that comes in to check the authenticity seems to give a lower price then what It's actually worth to make them more money, that coin goes for around 50k
34:33 Rick thinking he was going to attract a young girl by giving her knowledge but you can tell shes just like "idgaf, just give me money for the painting. I have no idea what your talking about."
I'm sure he would have been happy to give a penny. Now a cent he probably wouldn't have. American money is 1 cent. The people across the pond use 1 penny.
I like that they said it's because you're jobless too, like what does that have to do with the wealth/possessions of an aunt. I have an uncle who is a multi millionaire, but my immediate family isn't remotely wealthy.
**Rick on vacation** **waitress walks over** "Sir, would you like a margarita?" "Hold on. I got a guy who knows everything about margaritas. Give me 5 minutes, I'll get him down here and we can go from there."
Rick: Squeezes every dollar he can out of someone on negotiation, but when they come in knowing nothing and low-ball themselves, Rick just HAS to set them straight on how much it is possibly worth, and then low-ball them from there. You wanted 300? Well guess what, it's worth 10k. I'll give you 500 bucks for it.
@@frjcde9392 you missed the point entirely lol. Why get their hopes up just to shatter them a second later so he can pat himself on the back for knowing more than them? ego
@@thelegendaryredx7710 Well, in the Mission Impossible movies, they *do* pull off the "impossible mission," don't they? So it's not literally "impossible" -- it's just really hard, lol. "Impossible" here is just a figure of speech.
Imagine if at 29:20 the dude said it was a Gem Mint Uncirculated, and then Rick grabs it and crumples it up and says "Now it's not, $200, take it or leave it"
I can’t believe he would sell the coin his grandfather gave to him before he DIED, to this person even after he told him to always keep it. He didn’t even need it, it was just for home improvement. Why?
*brings in the Holy Grail* Rick: Well I don't trust you, so let me call in a buddy of mine to give to an auction house value, even though I'll have it sold by the end of the day within our inner circle. *expert arrives: Ah yes, this is a very rare find! You will have no problem finding a buyer, Rick!* Rick: It's going to sit for years, best I can do is this pocket lint and part of what once used to be a button, maybe
In business you do something called risk management. If you risk a lot all the time eventually you're going to get burned or go out of business. Pawn shops can't operate on razor thin margins because any item they buy can sit for years or they may not get as much as they want for the item $$ wise. If it was as simple as oh I bought X item for $5,000 now I'm going to definitely sell it for $6,000 a month later sure they can offer more money. Chances are great that said item will sit for a long while unless it's a really popular item.
This is always a very educational and humorous program. Very impressed with the excellent bargaining that always happens as well as the personalities. Excellent medium for these short meetings.
You know, after watching a fair amount of this show, I’ve learned a surprising thing about people. Family heirlooms don’t stay in the family anymore. There are so many grandsons, granddaughters, great great grandsons, etc. that get rid of very historical/sentimental items just for money. They don’t seem to care, and it’s just sad to see all this. I don’t get it.
It's amazing what a production team researcher can find out about all these items... and pass it on to Rick and the others, so the show can edit it and make it look like the owners are so wise 🤣
It's a pawn shop that deals with historic items that's been open for 20+ years. I would think after that amount of time, the people working there would know a thing or two about the majority of items coming in. Not everybody is as uneducated as you 😂
I would honestly keep that coin, with the fact that they offered about half the value, and the story behind it, I could never get rid of something with a backstory
"This is what happens when you call in an expert, you pay more money." The Experts: Yeah this is an original da Vinci, mint condition, with the secrets to the universe under the tapestry. Retail value is probably about 5k."
Seller: Brings in a meteorite made of diamonds and gold Expert: omg this thing is amazing you literally never see this and it’s in perfect condition.... 5 seconds later.... Expert: I would estimate it’s worth to be around 50¢-$1 Rick: I’ll give you a half eaten bag of Doritos and I won’t go a chip more
pratik Don't forget to do some research about the item that you have, and ( if you have a chance ) consult a legit expert that you trust ( if you know someone ) about it.
Yup cause they all of a sudden come and appraise it at the same price you’re asking for so they can low ball you lower cause they say that’s what they’re trying to make...
@@HandlesL Except these are *REAL* experts. No real expert would discredit themselves on TELEVISION for a few $. Takes seconds to google who these people are, and they have meritorious pedigrees. Fact is, their valuation is the average price. You could sell your own underwear for $1, but if someone who is ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED with you comes along, you could sell it for 1 million dollars. But does that mean that you were scammed if someone told you it was just worth $1? No, they're being realistic.
@frankos rooni People mainly sell at pawn stores for quick easy cash, they havent got time to wait for it to sell or they are in-need of the money urgently.
He did it to himself i would have got a second or more opinion this is what happens when you let pawns shop employees rate your stuff they will low ball you too for the shop to get a good deal 1st rule never sell anything that expensive to a pawn shop
I kinda love that mark won't give a value on anything because he loves history so much! We need more in the world to care about our history before it dies forever
That's not why he won't put a price on items he evaluates. He's said more than once that he doesn't put a price on things because he's from a museum mindset, not an appraiser.
@@scottkendrix6231 Yeah, to actually determine value, you would need to be up to date and familiar with markets, as well being able to appraise the item.
And listen to Cory rationalize giving the guy a mere 800 for it. Hey man you found it. So you didn't buy it. Hey Cory that doesn't change the fact that it's worth is a whole lot more.
@@dianemartin8603 And then Rick further rationalizes it saying "that you found"... because obviously if it had not been discovered by accident it'd be worth more.
@Chris Ruiz It's not just for the viewer, it's also a tactic to distract the owner before asking the money price, customer then gets more nervous to go back to reality and ask for a price that they will normally be more honest and not try to scam Rick, or ask higher numbers, and if they do, it will notice in their behaviour and reactions, it's a tactic, like if he was playing poker. "blablablablablabla, how much you want for it?"
Anyone can be a good negotiator, the most important tool is the ability to walk away. If you're emotionally attached to buying something or desperate to sell for cash that's when you get hosed.
yeah I was very confused by that one. The guy literally just told him that they're worth $100k in New York. The dude couldn't afford a $500 ticket to New York to sell it for $50,000 more?
@@mesofius 80K -100K Estimate is the retail price. The owner would sell them by consignment through a retail studio, with the retailer keeping about 25% of the sale price. Thus netting the owner 60K-75K. Unfortunately this would take months to sell, maybe longer. If the item didn't sell, the owner would have to drop the price. Taking 48K today vs. ~67.5K in a year isn't necessarily a bad decision.
Greetings from all my heart to all the experts in all the specialties that you host. I wish them health, safety, success and progress in their work. With great thanks and respect.
