Thats the sad part in the end - Made in China - its a simple piece of steel and some hinged parts - why cant it be made in America? Thats a world wide problem - everything we use is made in China, we have lost so much manufacturing capacity, not to mention jobs that goes with it.
Ok, pawpaw, I'm going to share something with you and all who will listen. Look for dealers who sell those big Grasshopper mowers, and such machines. Many of them are shipped in crates that are mostly stapled together. The stores have to pay to have them hauled to the dump, and it breaks my heart every time I see a load heading that way. These crates are made of 1x3; 1x6; untreated deck planks; 2x3; 2x6; 2x8; and sometimes, even 2x10x7' lumber. The place I go to will even load the wood on my truck, and has told me that if I want to park a trailer there, they'd just stack the lumber straight onto it. Most of it you can pull apart with your bare hands. For a woodworker it's like Christmas every week.
Over my lifetime, between driving and factory work, I have seen and used many thousands of pallets. I have yet to see a perfect one. Looks to me like you are correct, another product made to sell, and not so much to use, at least the way it was advertised .
Amazon's famous for refunding and letting you keep the item, I've heard. I tried to buy an item 3 times, everytime they said it was delivered. It might have been, but it wasn't delivered to ME! They would send another one no charge, same thing happened. Finally I said just refund it, and they did with no problem. I always had a person call me, not a computer. But that was a while ago. Jayman...
You can also buy a 3/8 plug cutter, and cut around the nail head. You'll have 3/8 inch holes in you boards. But if you're using the boards for a garden it shouldn't be a problem, if so nail the lid from a tin can over the nail holes. Blessings to you and your family
Thank you for your review, I almost picked one up. I will just keep doing what been doing to break pallets down. It takes a little more time but I do not break as many boards.
the best way I found to remove boards is using a hatchet as a wedge under the edge of the board...you were luckier than me at returning....I had a 2# $30 item to return, but closest return station was 60 miles away....would cost more in gasoline to return than item cost...
I also use the Skilsaw method. The ends are usually beat up and at best full of nail holes. When I'm cutting them to burn, I use my electric chainsaw and go down the middle. Do you use a metal detector before you run the boards through the planer? Would probably pay for itself the first time it found a hidden nail. I just bought one for finding the nails in the studs behind tile. Some people use them to check wood. I think there are also specialized metal detectors for woodworkers. The one I have is the Zircon M40. Preliminary testing finding nails in drywall is good. I'm going to try it on the tile today. Might make a video.
Yep, getting the wood off the pallets is very challenging for sure. I don't see how that thing would help much and it sounds like it doesn't. Thank goodness you got your money back for a defective item.
Great review. Yeah allot of these pallets use glue with the spiral nail....in combination with cheap pallet wood and some thin pallet wood they split on me all the time. Best and fastest way for me us cut them off and use a punch to push the nail out the rest of the way.
Paw Paw, thanks for the belly laugh. You almost calling them folks a rooster sucker made me spit my coffee! I appreciate your time to share your thoughts and experiences with us.
@@DoingItCheap I am pretty quick witted if I don't say so myself. Do NOT edit that out. You are just being your honest self. If it cost you momentarily then that is a different story. Thanks
Im really late to the video, but if you use a saw with a metal blade to cut the nails, flip the boards over on a table and use another nail and hammer to drive the nail heads out of the boards. Has worked great for me.
My thoughts exactly, those things are crap. They use heat activated glue nails that just won't let go. You know that I use the recip saw, but if I plan on using the lumber though a planer the head of the nail simply pops out with a nail punch.
I was talking about the 2x4's.... I did cut some like you but if I sacrifice the inch and a half, it is easy to bust the strip of wood free from the nails.
Paw paw no disrespect I tried to make pallet buster and I was no good I bought pallet buster from local welding shop it looks like yours and I love it,you have to use it a few times to get use to it,like riding bike not a lot can jump on two wheeled bike the first time ride it ,I split the first couple boards but after two pallets I can do a pallet in less than five minutes,as I say no disrespect in tended, from Aussie cousin terry
Pretty cool that they issued you a refund and let you keep the tool too. I bet you are right that they didnt want to pay return shipping. Just wondering if it would work any better if the pallets were left out in the rain or something where they were real wet and use the tool on the wet pallet? Have a good one!
