Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenw...
An American entrepreneur named Bob Imel found the Sterling SMG particularly interesting, and wanted to import them into the United States. He reached out to Sterling in 1967, but was unable to work out a deal before the 1968 Gun Control Act prohibited importation of machine guns. So instead, Imel decided to make them in the US. He tried to arrange a license with Sterling to do this, and finally gave up in the mid 1970s. Instead, he began making his own copy instead, under the company Police Automatic Weapons Systems (PAWS). Imel made a number of simplifications to the design, and also offered it in .45ACP (as the ZX-7, using M3 Grease Gun magazines) as well as 9mm Parabellum ( as the ZX-5, with variations using several different magazines, including Sten and Uzi).
Imel's work was again cut short in 1986, when the Hughes Amendment closed the machine gun registry in the US. He again shifted, this time to closed-bolt semiauto models (the ZX-6 in 9mm and the ZX-8 in .45). In total, he made about 1200 guns; 400 transferrable machine guns, 300 machine guns for export and police sales, and 500 semi autos.
Today, we are looking at the very first ZX-7 made...

The DC-15 versions were based on Star Wars guns from the original trilogy, which in turn had been built from real weapons with T-tracks covering the holes in the barrel shrouds. The DC-15 barrels were based on the Sterling / "E-11 Stormtrooper rifle", but the receiver was based on the MG-34 / "DLT-19 Heavy Blaster Rifle". On the long DC-15 rifle, the "E-11" part is actually upside-down, with the scope as a grip, fire-control group as a scope and folding-stock as front sight ...

A patent lasts 20 years, and the Sterling had been in production since 1953 so the patent was long expired. I assume he wanted the license so it could be stamped Sterling to increase sales and sell at a premium. It's rather like 1911s made by everyone, yet Colt 1911s still sell at a premium. You can probably think of a dozen other gun designs with similar knock offs. Springfield Armory just released a new Browning Hi-Power, but it's not stamped Hi-Power so no copyright infringement.

I wish I was skilled enough to build a Semi-Auto version of one of these in 45ACP or 10mm. I wonder if any of the Semi-Auto carbines are floating around the US used gun market? I have a Semi-Auto Sterling in 7.62x25mm Tokarev that feeds from Pps43 mags.

It shouldn't be overly difficult. Sure making it legal would be harder than making it rock and roll

I thought I was finally vindicated but it seems I'm still wrong and sadly misinformed. I read a book about the raid on St Nazire WW2 (please excuse the spelling, that might also be wrong), more than 30 years ago so I can't say who wrote it. The point that I remember distinctly is that the author claimed the British Commandos had suppressed Sterlings in .45 acp which was either a naturally sub-sonic round or had been produced specially as such. He claimed the most noise from the gun was the rattle of it's mechanism on full auto. I always believed it but it seems they were only ever produced in 9mm parabellum which made sense considering where a lot of them ended up. The gods of google couldn't help, not one reference to Sterlings in .45 acp. So am I delusional? All these years later, Ian references the PAWS ZX-7 and I went 'ah-ha', the book was right but they weren't produced until the late 60's. Please Ian, can you help out an old guy and render a definitive answer. If anybody takes the 'pee' out of me I will send a scud missile back at them (I have several in the garage), which we all know were developed by the Nazis in 1933? Fact that, honest. Pax vobis.

Hello mate I thought I'd already replied to this but it seems to have dissapeared, perhaps because it included a link. The time frame for the St Nazaire raid and the Sterling don't add up. St Nazaire was 42 and the Sterling began it's life in 44. Britain made efforts to suppress the Thompson, the 45 acp calibre was naturally subsonic and the timeline adds up with it being known that the Commando's used such Thompsons in 42 / 43 before abandoning the project and going with the suppressed Sten instead. Could it be that the book actually referenced a suppressed Thompson and you simply got the names mixed up somewhere along the way?

It's possible that either the author's or your brains have mistakenly conflated silenced Stems with the De Lisle Carbine

I recall your pointing out on the Taiwanese mini Sten that the magazine well rotates down under the body of the weapon to make it more convenient to pack for storage or transport; from looking at the ZX-7, it appears that the magazine well is integral to the main tube of the weapon, and can't be rotated. I would have thought that you'd bring it up as another difference between the Sten and the ZX-7, unless this monolithic design is an artifact of the prototype, and the regular production weapons have the same rotating magazine well as the Sten. Which is true? Is this another design difference, or just a quirk of the prototype?
