Crit-Air isnt confusing at all all you need is the phone app which will explain what the restrictions are in towns, cities etc. The sticker is around 5 euro's for the life of the vehicle not £12.50 a day as London that's got to be a bargain ? Strangely your vehicle doesn't become non-polluting if you spend £12.50 in London

Spain has a similar sticker (I suspect it'san EU thing) but the cities for non compliant is 50k not 150k. However once they get everyone stickered up they can easily introduce charges. Here in Tenerife we are waiting for the cameras to go up and go live then we shall see what their ultimate aim is/was. As an aside back in the early 2000's I was working on the Congestion charge computer data centre in Woking) and by chance one of my fellow workers wife was fairly high up in City hall. Even then the CC being introduced was just phase 1 and it was expected to enlarge to the M25 so this isn't the Mayors idea it's just he is there when the trigger was pulled.. (and he couldn't stop it even if he wanted too which he doesn't obviously )

Another great and informative video.. On the lock up garages issue, I understand a lot of insurance companies listed conditions are bikes are locked away in a garage.. Which puts people off biking.. It is a increasing problem as lock up garages are increasingly hard to find

@@philliplum3845 My insurance only covers me for theft from my locked garage and not anywhere else. A nightmare when spending 2 months in France. At 26 minutes in or so, Freddie's replying to someone about their concerns of Norton, the bikes not having certain things on them, that seem to be basic things, that way less expensive bikes have. Maybe it's my age, I dunno, but Freddie definitely seems to have an older, wiser heart at such a young age. I agree with him 100%, not only on this specific subject, but damn near every video that I've watched that he gives his opinion on. To the Norton, what he's talking about here, is grabbing your wallet and keys, and even if you forget your wallet, oh well ... The keys to the bike. Hopping on, kick starting in the damn thing, and heading down the road. He is so correct about being one with the machine. I love his honesty, always his honesty and integrity, if he had the money he would grab a Norton. His opinions, and listen up youngsters and old folks as well, his opinions and values are at the top of the scale! Like he says about Royal Enfield or any other company... how he does not accept money from them, this lengthy comment that I did not mean to make, is not because Freddie is my friend, or I know him casually or an acquaintance. I know him as you all know him, through his videos... Heck the BSA I had long ago, it was a '60s bike, and I was a late teen, it didn't have a headlamp, turn signals, any of that. It surely did not have any indicator telling me what gear I was in. No cruise control...(which, that absolutely enjoy on my Rocket!). However as Freddie would say, I am not faulting the person who asks this question, it is absolute common sense to feel this way, and, when spending money, most of us have to look at it as getting the most for our money, so I absolutely get the person asking this question of Freddie.

Freddie, I'm very surprised that Triumph have remained silent over your spare part shortage problem. You can tell a lot about a company when there is a problem by the way they respond and I would of expected a good company to have put their hands up admit there is a problem and put forward a plan to fix it in the future. There is a lot of competition out there and as much as Triumph want to sell new bike's they must not forget about supporting all their customers.

Freddie, I’m glad you said that about storage and not riding because I thought it was me just being lazy, my bikes are in a garage, only about 10 mins walk away but by the time I’ve got my gear and walked down and unlocked this and moved that then locked up again & put this here or that there then have to do it in reverse, I can’t be bothered. If my bikes were at my house I’d be nipping about every spare 5 mins I’ve got if I could just ride off and come home again. I prefer a garage for obvs reasons especially during the bad weather, but it is frustrating, ask my family and friends I tell them about it at least once a day 😂

you could have easily found a head gasket were you prepared to use a pattern part which are not usually rubbish if a reputable brand and often better than the factory part, that was an own goal pretty much, as for living in London get out of the place and save a fortune full stop, and double locking will not stop someone stealing a bike, battery grinders soon take care of those, a good quality Thatcham approved alarm along with the locks, as for inexpensive gear army surplus is a good starting place, RE Norton, they are pretty much a hand made bike and so you pay a premium for that and exclusivity, as for heritage Norton, BSA and Triumph have none as they went broke and the present companies are all new and nothing to do with the old companies, just the same with Indian motorcycles in the US, they are an old brand in name only. The Honda CB500 twin is renowned for high miles, and to add to that I know of a Harley Sportster that has gone way past 200 thousand miles on everything original apart from a clutch upgrade early in it's life

Freddie - There's no denying that biking is a risky pastime; the statistics show that. And no matter how skillful and careful a rider you are, serious accidents can be and are caused by other road users 'not seeing' the biker and pulling out in front of them, turning right across one's path etc. What is your view on this aspect of our chosen interest?
@Rossy167
@Rossy167 Год назад
So I'm not Freddie, but I've ridden for 2 years in SEA, in conditions that are statistically far more dangerous than the USA, UK and Europe. I will say that my #1 piece of advice for riders is to hover over the horn whenever you're around cars/trucks etc, I am so far incident free, but this action alone has saved my life a few times.

A storage solution could be to share a garage. Treat it as any rental, so References essential, copy of passport, home address etc etc and a substantial key deposit, £3-£500 and a months rent in advance, at £10 a week for 4 others in a similar position generates you a 'free' space for yourself. Councils dont much care about sub let garages so long as the rent is paid on time. Lots of people do it, especially for bikes. Shared space on a budget, especially in London, is highly desirable for bikes. Use the free Ad papers and online spaces.

Having seen your difficulties it getting a gasket, I don't think that I would buy another. £1,000 plus servicing costs e.g. current Speedmaster, also puts me off. I rent a brick built garage for my bikes, which is at the back of my house. I have rented it for over 30 years and the cost has never gone up......£25 per year! I'm returning to England again, this time from Portugal, and I'll be looking for something similar but in the north of England. Can't afford London now. Ski thermals: great idea. Bike thermals are a rip-off like everything aimed at bikers. British brand made in Britain apart from Norton? CCM. My first holiday on a bike was as an 18-year-old aboard a Honda CD175. The Harley is sub-6K. But it's 26 years old! Entertaining as ever. Nick J

I would advise Franco to consider moving to a cheaper, more civilised, less crime infested part of the country, where it’s possible to buy or rent a place with somewhere to secure his bike. Alternatively, find another two bikers in his area with whom to share a car lock-up, thus reducing the cost to £10 per week, and £520 per year. But if we all dealt with the thieves in the appropriate way, the problem would not exist. This is where I would normally criticise the police for their ineptitude in dealing with real crimes, but I don’t want to hurt their feelings. I’m sure some are still getting over losing Wayne Cussens. Someone did suggest a health and safety initiative that involves testing ULEZ camera poles for their capacity to withstand the weight of a corrupt public official, or other criminal, suspended by its neck - after conviction by a summary court of course. Freddie, I had a week away on the speedmaster, not camping (I’m 60, so like some basic comfort), that’s for the ABR festival. I went from Bedford to Bournemouth, over to Watchet and Bude, Bude to Lands end via Perranporth and back to St Austell, from St Austell to Andover via Torquay and the Cheddar Gorge, then Andover to Walsall, finally a quick blast on Saturday morning from Walsall to Bedford. I avoid motorways wherever possible, T-shirt weather too. I picked up my Speedmaster Chrome edition on 1st March and have done 8000+ miles on it so far in all weathers (except snow). I have a Frank Thomas all in one which was fine, I had to wash it and now it leaks, especially from the seat of the bike which is like a small bucket lol, however, after listening to some guys at the ABR festival who suggested you don’t need all the clobber for hundreds of pounds a go, wear layers and get a lightweight waterproof jacket that folds up to nothing and waterproof leggings and you are sorted. This has been my style moving forward, they take up next to no room in the panniers and ultra light weight. Keep up the great work

Freddie! 1960s: I had one of the last great Nortons, I.e., with the featherbed frame. It sat by the kerb with cousin Peter's BSA 3. We had no lock up. We were in trouble. Parts were disappearing. Solution: Peter found a clapped out health service ambulance. We stripped the inside. We found some kind of paperwork that made it immune to the ticket people, and parked the thing outside Pete's flat in Hampstead. The bikes stayed snug and safe as they waited for our weekend ride.

How are Norton, an Indian owned company, more British than Triumph, a British owned company? Triumph now turn out more bikes at Hinckley than Norton will ever do on their production lines. Also, the price of the Nortons is worse than you think, as most people would opt for the coach lines, badged seating and cowl etc, and which means that you are moving into 18k for what most reviews consider to be a quite unrefined bike. Freddie, as for winter riding, I have changed my mind and to some disagree with your advice. today, it is easy and not outrageously expensive to purchase jackets, gloves, socks, pants, that are all battery operated and rechargeable. . .The world is changing quickly (maybe too quickly) but I’ve changed my advice about cold weather riding which matched yours for some years, then went to buying plug in heated vests and gloves. ..to now, battery powered gear that is easy to find, and not super expensive. I have heated grips on the T120. . .standard and not an option, and of course, that is also a nice thing.

The old Harley that passes the emissions test has a California cam. The lobes are practically pointed like triangles. Anyone who knows performance cams can tell you this is a low power but clean running cam. Since the certification was only on new bikes most California bikes got the cam changed. I did mine in an afternoon. You don’t even have to pull the heads. Simply a set of bolt cutters to remove the stock pushrods, a new set of adjustable pushrods and some gaskets are all that are needed to replace the cam. To pass the ULEZ test would require the California cam being installed. An afternoon project on an Evolution engine. Old Twin Cams are not worth the bother.

thought id input about the australian roads. entirely depends where you live. if you’re in the country, then yes id certainly go for a cruiser motorcycle. I own one myself but live in the suburbs, and have a few friends on very fast sportsbikes. I have found that the sport bikes are a blast to have for the suburbs, navigating through the lovely streets and onto freeways. However i get the same job done with my classic 350, albeit with more comfort, more style, and a bigger smile.

Bike security in London, yes chain it to a lamp post with an Oxford Beast chain, secured to the bike with a Litelock on the rear wheel. On the front wheel a D lock going through a cover with a chain around the front wheel. I had all this on my bike and the thieves ripped the cover off and on discovering the locks left the bike intact.

I use an airbag vest but only in the winters. It's too hot for summer riding. It is pretty warm so I just look at it as a piece of clothing (albeit a heavier piece of clothing). For running errands where i don't care what I look like or commuting, it gives an extra layer of safety. If i'm going on a date, i'm ditching the airbag.

I am a huge fan of electric heat. A modern jacket liner is about as thick as a shirt. The only downside is a wire between rider and bike. I have walked away from the bike while still plugged in😮. Not a tragedy but that would really be bad with an airbag suit!

Air bag vests are a great idea and especially if you commute or tour, some have sensors so you don't have to be tethered to the bike but i did read that tethered are better, trouble is, if you forget, you'll accidentally inflate if you get off. Also, some can be recharged by yourself after they've gone off,, others you have to send back to get recharged (they use a gas to quickly inflate) the later being more expensive. They are a good idea, i saw a youtube video of a harley rider and a pillion, they got knocked off around 60mph, both walked away thanks to their jackets inflating

Hi Freddie... On the lock-up for the bike in London.. I would imagine you could get 2 or maybe 3 bikes in a lock-up.. so... share the cost and even, if you get enough people, rent a couple and sub let them out.. make money from a tough situation.. maybe it's not doable, but that's what what immediately came to mind. It could be seriously popular, if it's allowed, but I don't see why not.. just an idea. 😊

I'm sorry Freddie but I have to disagree with you about Norton. Whilst they may be trying to sell their Britishness they are owned by an Indian company, with Italian brakes and Swedish suspension they just happen to have chosen to assemble the parts in the UK. We live in a global marketplace and whatever marketing schtick they choose to use they still have to compete for my money. I love the idea of owning a Norton and I'm fortunate enough that I could do so but I currently own a Triumph Bonneville T120 and I cannot see anything in the Norton that would pull me away. Why would I spend more money to own a bike that has less power, less equipment and no more brand recognition than I already have? It is a beautiful bike but an unproven manufacturer with little to no dealer network and as far as i can see it's exclusivity factor is only based on an inflated price rather than any real tangible benefit.
@jfro5867
@jfro5867 Год назад
Like you I am fortunate enough to have the means to buy one but won’t. Look on Norton forum websites and (apart from one or two fanatics who can’t see fault) it’s not been well received. These are people who already own Nortons who’ve test ridden but came away underwhelmed. Norton were outperformed 50 years ago never mind nowadays. I’d go for a Guzzi tbh, similar performance, classy, half the cost, wayyyy more authenticity, built in the same place for 100 years.

Freddie Regarding airbag and hi-viz clothing etc my view simply is, if they see us wearing it , there is a chance they'll make it law to wear it, not so long ago there was a proposal from Brussels for bikers to have fitted flashing beacons on bikes," I'm not making this up" anyway MAG got this stopped , in last years motorcycle news one of these airbag manufacturers was lobbying fema to get this labeled as a must for riders, motorcycling has always been a lifestyle choice to be different in this everyone must conform society that's been created for us, if any of you guys are familiar with back street heroes ,,BSH ,, just have a wee look at what conformity is here, imagine some of these guys wearing this shite, when I was riding around on a 750 chopper my jacket was the riders old favourite the army camouflage jacket, that was a definite pull from the cops , there's not enough of the camouflage jackets type of people anymore, it's all I must conform,,,, I refuse to wear dayglo clothing simply because and I repeat, ,,,,, if they see us wearing it, they'll make it law to wear it, the end ,

Freddie, I am following up with my concern about delay in getting parts for my T120 that “disassembled. A week after I posted (and you read) my post, we heard the bike was fixed and come get it. It was fixed and we can’t find a thing wrong. I remain worried about Triumph’s being caught with their pants down around adequate part production, but at least here in the US, and a modern T120, our wait was three weeks. . .not three months. Good luck with your Triumph, I do believe as a RU-vidr (and one of the best), I think you might need to be a dual bike owner. . .just please don’t follow others into the small (300CC or so) Royal Enfield etc. life style. I think many (or maybe not) of your fans are tired of the time Tubers are spending on these cheap (beautiful) put put bikes. I love Stuart Fillingham, but i don’t watch him much anymore because we has dived too deeply into that world.
