Pocket 8-10s SUCK... I had to strike out in the 10th frame to beat my previous high game of a 166 on March 7th. Strike on the first ball and left the 8-10 with a solid pocket hit on the second. Only got 1 pin, should go without saying. Got a 165, and I was steamed.
@@NateCraven318 it's caused by the ball more skidding than rolling, causing the ball to bounce off rather than go through the pins. In other words, probably didn't throw it correctly lol
@@sludge4125 I was 12 at the time, and while I was surprised at the "incident", people forget that week after week after week, bowlers were playing the one board repeatedly. What I was surprised at more was the fact that Del lost the grand Prize check with that ball.
I also watched it live as a kid. I remember not liking Del Ballard Jr. for whatever reasons (he was ugly?), and I was *overjoyed* when he guttered that shot and lost.
These videos are not only entertaining, but also well edited and to the point, how actual videos should be. Thank you as I just watched all your videos back to back after discovering your channel.
Yikes…I remember that Holman match-he ended up with like a 137 for the game, which was the lowest score I’d ever seen on TV at the time. It probably stayed that way until the 299-100 match.
Old timer here, the Del Ballard - Pete Weber gutterball possibly was the worst mistake, since that was the final shot for winning the tournament. Ballard was playing his strike line which was swinging outside of 5 board, risky but no gutters until that memorable last shot. He needed just 7 pins, obviously should have moved in with a hard straighter line. Crazy ending!
This is probably the most disappointing video I've ever seen🤣 It made me feel a lot better about my game. Good to know that even the best can seriously fuck up😆
2:25 That was Del Ballard Jr's fill ball in the 10th frame of the tile match. He needed 6 pins to tie 7 to win, so it cost him the match and the title.
The last clip seems strange that he has never seen the 8 10 split. I do feel better that the pros are not perfect and prone to gutterballs. I recall the Marshall Holeman match. He was having a very bad day and you could tell he just wanted it to end
He has seen the 8-10 split before. There’s no doubt a pro has shot at or seen one in his many, many games and years of bowling. The thing is that the 8-10 usually is a product of a light pocket hit by low-speed strokers (recall Walter Ray) whose ball cannot drive through the pins with enough revs and lose all energy and cannot take out either 8 or 10. But he has a high rpm and speed. That shot looked like it would have formed a mixer 7 pin, or almost have a pocket 7-10 with the messenger flying to take out the ten pin. But neither happened, and I’m pretty shocked to see a mixer shot leave a 8-10 split too.
The ball came in at an incorrect angle, I wouldn't say it should be on this video, but if it came at a better angle the 10 wouldn't of been standing, so still preventable.
When I was younger (probably a teenager), I was a league bowler, and would infrequently compete in regional tournaments or some such. One time, I started a game with five straight gutter balls. That's right, _five._ I was into the third frame with no score. It was, hands-down, the most embarrassing day of my life. I blame my nerves and the fact that I was in a different state, around people I didn't know, in an alley I had never been to before, but I wanted so badly to do well in those, and that was, by far, the worst single game I've ever bowled.
In sport shot league one year, I must have put 20 shots in gutter. One game I had front 6 and then gutter. That may have been double gutter. Front 6 and not even 200. Now I dont' need to feel so bad.
The infamous Del Ballard gutter is always harsh to watch. In my gut instinct I would have said throw a straight shot and if you go brooklyn who cares you probably got enough pins
THIS IS JUST PHYSICS, everyone gets gutters, the only way to get a perfect shot is to put the ball into a 16" canon and fire it!! NO ONE is so consistent as to get x's every shot, this is the ABNORMALITY folks :-)
I bet that Weber blamed the camera crew and announcers or his gutter I watched the Ballard shot live I didn't see any 'real' mistakes...leaving an solid corner isn't a mistake
This sort of makes them look much worse than they are. Some short oil patterns force you to play the gutter. I've thrown enough there in sport shot league.
They all think that they are immune to splits, gutter balls, misses, etc. Wake up, boys! Stop blaming the pins and the balls. You all are human! There are some league bowlers who would put you to shame!
There would be a lot more gutter balls, even from the pros, if they oiled the outside of the lane like they used to do in the 1970's. The only way to make it harder to get one wet would be if they used bumpers.
If the bowling rule setters would outlaw these ridiculous balls which allow these crazy hooks then the bowlers would have to go back to creating their own shots.
