A video of PBA players throwing the ball straight at a full rack, rather than the normal hook ball. Possibly the most pointless video I’ve made… Thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed!
If anyone is curious why this is done, sometimes, if you're required to get lets say 7 pins to win, throwing with hook, sometimes you can pull it (miss left) or drop it (miss right) and not get the required, so its a much safer play (unless you need a strike or 9, to go straight at the pocket, or sometimes just to have fun
also, bowling balls break down every shot, so another point you can think about is that throwing a spare ball doesn’t disrupt the oil on the lane as much as a reactive resin or urethane so that you’re shot can be saved for the next match or keep your bowling ball in max condition (just to save money on either cleaning your ball or buying more bowling balls, if you have the privilege and dedication to the sport to spend)
I'm trying to bowl straight from now on. (Until I get my accuracy back up). When I hit the pocket without hook, the pins explode like anyone hooking into the pocket. I've pondered giving up hooking altogether, as that might make me better ready for all lane conditions. But it won't even matter unless I can get my 220 average back. My average now is 96.
I had a buddy who bowled, with a 16 lb ball, in our league, with his wife. Saw him finish a game once using his wife's 14 lb ball. I don't think the ball hit the lane for like 30 feet. The rack virtually exploded when the ball went in. Took out 9 pins...I think they were afraid to not fall! The 10 pin cowered in fear, but remained.
There’s just something so satisfying about watching these pros who are usually so focused on pinpoint precision and finesse just take the cannon out and start blasting.
I'm terrible at bowling but I once hit 5 strikes in a row while throwing straight. Happened in the last 5 frames of a match that my buddy and I had bet on as well. He was up 30 before I did it and he ended up losing by 20. Couldn't repeat it with a thousand tries, and my friend was absolutely slack jawed.
Had that happen twice when I was in a league. My average stinks (120s), but twice I managed to string a series of strikes together in a game, my highest scores being a 222 then a 223 the following year.
I still remember when he shot 100 exactly in a TV match and cheered sarcastically when he took out half the Big 4 to get it. His opponent meanwhile shot 299, which remains the largest margin of defeat in a televised PBA match.
Was messing around doing this earlier while practicing. It feels like putting every ounce I have into the shot and I can just barely crack 20MPH. Daugherty makes 24.7 look so easy! It's also way more fun than it has the right to be to just rocket a straight ball at the head pin and watch the rack explode.
@@okkumo1476 oooo, i didn't think about that. Makes sense looking now, though. The speed pops up immediately at release. Maybe I do throw it close to 25 o_O
There's an older clip on RU-vid with Pete Webber in a similar situation. I believe he needed 4 pins so he threw it straight..............and he left the 5-7-10!

1:40 looks like one of my signature bowls. though every time I do it the staff threaten to kick me out for some reason, and it never gets that many pins
Two big takeaways from this: 1) All players scream like Pete Weber, he just got famous for "WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE I AM" 2) All players at all levels love the idea of just chucking the ball down the lane as hard as they can sometimes
Man, these are all just playing it safe at the end when they need only 8 or more pins. I was hoping there'd be some where they just abandoned their curve completely mid game because it wasn't working for them. That's my experience with it at least.
I only bowl straight. I grew up bowling duck pin in Baltimore as a kid. When I switched to 10 pin my form carried over. I can’t hook a ball if I try. I do have a 183 average bowling straight though.
i dont know much about bowling but im guessing its hard to get a strike throwing the ball straight at pins? thats why the professionals curve the ball in?
Yes. A straight ball tends to deflect to one side, preventing it from hitting the pocket solidly altho this isn't always the case. A ball thrown well with hook and spin hits the pocket between the 1 and 2 or 1 and 3 pins and drives thru without deflection causing its path to deviate, creating a much bigger chance for a strike.
I like how it's an entire continent (europe) vs one single country (USA) Lol, they do the same thing in golf with the Ryder Cup. Always struck me as odd that Europeans have to lump themselves together in order to compete against the US hahaha
Well I’m not sure what you want to do to make it competitive. If you exclude Russia as Golf and bowling are not sports commonly played there, the USA have a bigger population than Germany, UK, France, Italy and Spain combined.
Press the reset button just before impact. I wonder how many rakes/sweeps can stop the ball. Brunswick A2 rake looks flimsy and would break. Ball would probably concave the deck shield.
i do candlepin bowling up here in massachusetts and most of us throw a straight ball but it comes with a lot of chops and splits. it's hard to throw a consistent hook by the nature of the size of the ball and the hard maple lanes all the way down from approach, foul lind and to the pin deck. the ball skids alot.
if anyone is wondering:"who does this stupid shit" they do it is because they need 4 or 5 pins and because they are professionals they can do it with no effort . also, they may foul making them (sometimes) lose by 1 pin.
Lot of these they already have the game won right? Or don't need a strike to win so they chuck it down the middle to take away any chance of a gutter ball.
1:37 I hope Kevin's thumb is ok from that shot I also have a lightning spare ball so I know when this happens it hurts. The shoulder and the thumb don't like it.
@@monitorscreenbroked Don’t be. It’s a synthetic bowling lane so it can take a beating like that. Something like that won’t break it. Osku Palermaa’s chair shot doesn’t damage the lanes, neither would this
Ngl, I've only ever played ten pin as a social thing once every few years. It is only the expense of bowling that stops me wanting to do it. I'm sure Golf would be cheaper!! In any case, I only know how to bowl 'straight'.
