2 questions. Your reply would be greatly appreciated. 1. I have the winegard xt pro signal meter and really like it, however it will show channels for instance wish-tv 8.1 with an snr of 24db and my tv nor my airtv 2 pick it up on a channel scan. 2. Why do channels have better reception at night? Your channel has been a big help. I install antennas as a side gig in my hometown in Indiana.

I'm a big fan of UHF bow-tie antennas here in terrain challenged NH. Boston stations are about the same distance away from us as your test location 42-ish miles. We upgraded for the DTV transition in 2008. We are using an old-style CM-4228 with a mast mounted CM 7777 preamp that has separate VHF and UHF inputs. The reason we needed the 7777 pre amp is VHF stations are at a different azimuth than UHF so we are using a dedicated VHF-hi antenna and using the preamp to combine them.

Your channel is a valuable resource. I've learned alot about cutting the cord. And after your reviews, I'm getting a Channelmaster Extremenna 80. It arrives tomorrow! I can't wait to try it out. I'm in the shadow of a significant mountain ridge, but I'm hoping to overcome that!
@AntennaMan
@AntennaMan 6 месяцев назад
The EXTREMEtenna is a great antenna. It should work well. The best advice I have is to use a TV tuner/signal meter to fine tune the precise height, direction, and possibly even the location. Moving an antenna as little as a foot or two can have a huge impact on reception. See video below: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1_Cy08x5qeY.html

I used my VNA to do a return loss on some antennas I had, including frequency response flatness. The old log periodic antennas work out to be the best in gain and directivity, no preamp!
@RickPaquin
@RickPaquin 6 месяцев назад
They really do. I have an expensive 8-bay Tyler demonstrated once that I use to deliver reliable reception for a station at a distance of 70 mi. It does the job with no issues. (except solar storms) Tyler also demonstrated and recommended a major suburban brand, log periodic type that claimed 45mi. I bought one and was also amazed at its performance. I learned one day experimenting that it can deliver almost the same signal level as my expensive 8-bay if it's in the exact same location of the signal. As a new ham I've also been looking at those VNA's pretty close and comparing each model. It's another learning curve but you have furthered my interest!

I've got one that looks very similar to that one in my attic. I bought it years (+15) ago to hook up a 'hi-fi' radio receiver and it worked well for that. It even has the VHF extension on it, but no amplifier. I repurposed it by repositioning it and its been working great since I cut the cable TV cord. I'm only 40 miles from the 'antenna farm' on a mountain top with almost nothing in the path. Even rain doesn't affect the signal.
@AntennaMan
@AntennaMan 6 месяцев назад
The design itself is actually pretty good. I've installed 4 bay UHF antennas before and they work extremely well. It's unfortunate the faulty preamp built into the antenna rendered it useless.

I've worked with several antennas over the year, the classic yagi style is the best for most applications. An 8 bay is good if you don't have any VHF stations.

Paired with the Channel Master CM-3424 indoor amplifier, I'm getting an excellent signal to 3 TV sets from U.S. TV stations 75 miles away from Vermont into Canada. Tyler, the next time you throw an "antenna" across the room, please video the damage that occurred. Would make a great ending to your informative videos. Also, I'd enjoy your comparing your latest "test" antenna against the best antenna you've ever tested. A shoot-out would be great. My Antenna Direct 91XG (no booster and a rotor) is still my go-to for fringe reception, but it can't tune RF channel 12. I can get it with my outdoor FM radio antenna from about 60 miles away over flat terrain. Both antennas are about 25' above the ground. My Televes doesn't come close to the 91XG and won't find RF 12. The 91XG survived a 70 mpg microburst during a storm that destroyed the Televes and FM antennas. Too bad the 91XG is so expensive...
@AntennaMan

I don't include the best antenna in the comparison because it dissuades people from watching my other videos to find out which would hurt the reach of my RU-vid channel. If someone wants to find the best antenna, they have to watch my other videos.

@AntennaMan
@AntennaMan 6 месяцев назад
I get trying to salvage an antenna, but in my case the video was a review of the product. It's reviewed as is the same way it would be used if a customer purchased it. If the antenna has to be modified in order to work correctly, it does not deserve credit for how it would perform. The average viewer of my RU-vid channel is the basic non-technical cord cutter who uses an antenna. Videos that are too technical in nature perform poorly so I no longer make them.

Are there very many television antennas that could pick up channels that are 110 miles away? We used to be able on the cable to get television stations that were 50 miles away and 100 or a little more miles away. But the cable provider who took over for our previous company after absorbing us dropped the channels that were of greater distance claiming it would be Network Duplication. We are over 50 miles from that company's Head -in , so by FCC rules the Duplication argument should not be valid. At least that what we were once told. Would this be so Tyler?
@AntennaMan
@AntennaMan 6 месяцев назад
The issue isn't so much that an antenna can't pick up channels that are over 100 miles away but rather the signals are blocked by horizon due to the curvature of the earth. It's possible at that distance if there's a receiving tower on a mountain but most cable companies get out of market TV stations from either fiber or satellite.

This is truth! There was a day when over the air TV was stable and available for just about everyone! With me it was also a hobby experimenting with a portable TV dxing distant stations! Then the government sold their soul to big tech and suddenly you either live in the TV studio to get reception or you guessed it, pay for any TV you receive!

Hi I just found your channel looking for reviews on a antenna called Wave Max. Have you heard of this antenna? Is is good or junk like 80 percent of the ones for sale. Thank You

It's junk. Stick with a reputable US antenna company. You can find a list of recommended antennas or sign up for an antenna recommendation from me below: www.antennamanpa.com/antenna-recommendations.html

What Tyler mentioned about the receiving distance of this antenna is NOT true. You only need to set up four of these antennas in a "stacked array," connecting them together, and then notify the FAA of your intention to install a 2000' tall tower, with an approved navigation aid lighting system package. Oh, don't forget, you'll need a 2000 foot continuous run of RG6 - minimum - cable to connect it to an antenna amplifier at the base of the tower. Oh man, I'm 61 and getting SO forgetful! You also need to get approval from your local board overseeing the plan, in addition to lawyers, and I almost forgot, you'll also need to pay a hefty, monthly electric bill for maintaining the navigation-aid lighting system and so on, and so forth... If you really need to watch an OTA broadcast television station from 150 miles away, using THIS antenna, it would be FAR cheaper just to move within 30 miles of the transmitting tower of this aforementioned station. Then after you've moved in, sit back and enjoy watching the pictures flying through the air, in high definition, courtesy of that cheaply manufactured antenna, that Tyler has just commented on. Once again, just listen to the common sense of what Tyler has mentioned and you'll be fine. As the late, broadcasting legend Paul Harvey would say when signing off, "Good day."

Funny someone else is having this problem. The county where our current Head- in is under different jurisdiction from our location. Let me relate a sad but true story. An area in Eastern Ohio is under the jurisdiction of Pittsburgh Pa- on the surface sounds okay? These people received only Cleveland and Youngstown on their cable. And often one hand doesn't know what's happening on the other side. Pittsburgh attempted to warn them- many lost their lives when the flash flood waters inundated their valleys. Now the Weather Bureas at least speak to each other but it doesn't make up for lives lost. And in my case my responsible Weather Bureau is approximately 100 miles away also.😢 Said Head-in is over 50 miles from my city, so the FCC rule against duplication is rendered invalid. There is small TV station, one county and less than 25 miles away, they would be quite cognizant of ourWeather trends but new Cable provider won't let us have it. So if I want to watch it I almost have to resort to a coat hanger or a rabbit ear?😢

Dude, just remove the pre-amp, can be sufficient as an indoor antenna.

I really wish you would stop comparing the antenna you're testing to "the last 2 antennas" you reviewed. It really gives no gauge as to how well a particular type of antenna SHOULD work. Let's see the results against the 2 top performers in the same category of antenna regardless of which antenna you tested last.

My RU-vid channel is mostly supported by views. I always include the results of the last two antennas in my reviews. If someone wants to find the best performers, they have to watch my other videos. If they do not want to take the time to do the research, my antenna recommendation service is another option.

@@AntennaMan That sucks. A lot of consumer help channels actually want to help people for the sake of helping people rather than click baiting them into wasting their time watching dozens of other monetized videos on their channel. I know. A guy has to make a living. And for some, RU-vid is their major source of income. But it still sucks for someone who just wants to know the limitations, positives/negatives of a particular style of antenna.
