What is a peripheral blood smear test?
A peripheral blood smear test is also known as a blood smear test, peripheral blood film, blood smear analysis or smear test. This test checks the size and number of red and white blood cells (RBCs and WBCs) and platelets. It also helps to check other numbers such as the size and number of different types of WBCs or leukocytes. Leukocytes include neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, monocytes and lymphocytes. This test checks the size, structure and number of blood cells.
Different cells play different important roles in the body.
White blood cells fight against infections and are a part of the immune system.
Red blood cells or erythrocytes carry oxygen to different tissues of the body
Platelets are small pieces or fragments of cells that are necessary for clotting
Why is a peripheral blood smear test done?
A peripheral blood smear test is done in people who have the following symptoms:
A low number of erythrocytes
Fatigue and dizziness throughout the day
Persistent or recurrent fever after traveling to a developing country or coming in contact with a tick
Jaundice, yellowing of the skin and eyes
Uncontrolled bleeding
Frequent nosebleeds
Easy bruising
Pale face
Enlarged spleen
Rarely, this test helps to detect exposure to the parasite or its carrier (where there are more parasites). For example, if a person lives in an area with a lot of mosquitoes, he or she will be at a higher risk of getting malaria.
There are many diseases that can affect the appearance of blood cells. That is why this test also helps to diagnose various conditions, such as:
Bone marrow disorders
Blood cancers
Anemia
Myeloproliferative neoplasms
This test also helps to determine blood cell counts after chemotherapy.
