I just want to take a moment and say thank you . I am currently looking around for a 986 and you have given me a few more thing to look out for when checking out a possible car .

Out of all the porsches I've own I hate to admit that the 986 was my favorite. The handling was so satisfying and the old power steering felt better than electric power steering in newer porsches. They're slow but it felt so good to drive.

Thank you for that honest and well informed review. I have the chance to buy a 1999 Boxster with just 13000 km. That's not a misprint. It's been in storage and they want $13000. Just trying to see if that's a good deal.

How is the maintenance on the 1999 model? High cost or low cost? And what are your thoughts on 1999 with 44k miles

Nice to see a lot of love for the 2.5s. I've owned a 2.5 and now a 3.2, my girlfriend now owns a 2.5. There is definitely a value to the experience of the 2.5 in some areas!

at last an "old Boxster" review talking about the real wear and tear. Others mostly talk about tyre thread and take it to a PPI ...

Just bought my first Porsche, a ‘99 Boxster - 5 speed - with 64K miles for $8K. It’s in great shape with some minor exterior imperfections. Been a BMW guy for over 20 years and decided to go for the Porsche experience. Thanks for this video! It helped with my decision.

Good work. You might want to mention that pre-2003 Boxsters had plastic rear windows and more amber on the headlights and taillights.

Great video, looking at a 1999 986 with tiptronic and low kilometers. I'd prefer a manual, but the price and colour are very appealing.

I've had both and they are way above a 914. That was just a dumb comparison. One was a $6500 VW/Porcshe and the Boxster was a $45,000 Porsche. Big difference. Go back to reviewing honda;s.

I've been searching for a 4 wheel therapist. I started with the MX5 then the Z4 e86 now i'm stuck on Porsche. I've seen alot of comments say these are actually practical and reliable? Affordability?

I've had many Porsches since 1984 944.purchased in '83. Bought used after that - 928 and 911. Just bought my 7th - 1999 986. Reliable - yes! Cost of ownership no more than a "regular" car. Parts are expensive but last longer & Porsches have less depreciation.

Hi Jake Thanks for your review. I owned this original now for 3 years and 10000 miles and loved every single moment. Its minimalism, simpleness and built quality must be of the best. Value for money; richness never came so cheap!

I think the 2nd gear issue is predominantly in the 6-speed manual found in the 996 and Boxster S. I prefer the feel of the 2.5 and 2.7 Boxster 5-speed over the 3.6 996 6-speed.

I sourced a 986 S from a gentlemen that purchased it off an auction due to it “over heating”. Apparently, a Porsche mechanic has since fixed it (coolent temp sensor, serpentine belt, water pump, thermostat, with new coolant) and it’s running great again. 2001 with 131xxx miles for about $6k-$7k. Would you stay away or go for it? No previous service records available (aside from mentioned repairs). Really tempted.

I am in the market for one of the earlies Boxster S 1999 -2004 and ask you maybe already know the big question I ask the dealers is about the IMS bearing and they tell me they don't know if the IMS bearing have been fix. Also I understand the Boxster build until the year 2000 don't have the IMS bearing problem? What is you opinion ?

How important is the mileage to these cars? Better looking for low-milage cars or it doesn't really matter?
@roger9280
@roger9280 7 лет назад
Konstantin better have a high mileage car with good maintenance than a low mileage one with poor one
@bionictulip
@bionictulip 7 лет назад
Extremely low mileage is a red flag, because it means the car hasn't been driven enough. Porsche recommends at least 6000 miles per year, to keep all the fluids moving, parts lubricated, and seals from drying out. Aside from a few known issues (IMS bearing on 986, water pump, rear main seal, and coil packs in some cases), mileage isn't as important as maintenance and current condition of the car. If the car's interior looks trashed, there's a better-than-average chance the mechanicals have been neglected, too.
@lifehackertips
@lifehackertips 6 лет назад
Low mileage on any car could mean it sat for years which is damaging to any vehicle.

I was searching for a 99 because of this video, but my Porsche dealer had a gorgeous 2004 Boxster in Carmona red metallic, manual with a tan interior. It was love at first sight. These are great cars, buy one while they are still affordable.

What do you think about the Boxster S in Automatic?
@RickyG225
@RickyG225 5 лет назад
What about the Front crankshaft oil seal needing to be replaced @ approx 30,000 mls? Is this something that is considered an issue with the engine in this car? Or perhaps year 2000 to 2003. Not really sure.

I've owned a 1999 Boxster Base for a year now and just love it. I know it as a 986 v1, Flat 6, 5-speed manual, water cooled, Normally-aspirated, Port injection, Double overhead camshafts with 201 hsp @6000 rpm. I am confused that Jake referred to his test car as a "996", as I thought we have the same car?
@thomaspowell3739

I think he is promoting the earlier model because it brings more work to him...IMS bearing failure, weak expansion tanks, window regulators, just to name few😉
@bigmacdaddy1234
@bigmacdaddy1234 6 лет назад
He wasn't promoting anything you dope.
@choomickle623
@choomickle623 6 лет назад
Thomas Powell IMS failure on pre 1999 is 1% whereas after 2000 it’s 8% failure rate. The more you drive at higher revs the less likely it is to fail due to ‘self’ lubricant. All cars have weak points.
@5pecialFX
@5pecialFX 5 лет назад
The 97-2000 boxters have less IMS issues than the 2000- 2004 models.
