In a global economy, the work of protecting investors does not stop at U.S. borders.
Each year, more than $100 trillion is traded on U.S. stock markets, with companies from around the world coming to U.S. markets to list their shares.
No matter where a company is headquartered, if its securities trade on U.S. capital markets - or if it has a reporting obligation with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission - it must follow U.S. laws that protect investors.
And under U.S. law, those companies' financial statements must be audited by an accounting firm registered with the PCAOB.
PCAOB inspectors travel around the world to ensure that PCAOB-registered firms are following PCAOB standards and rules.
Our investigators also work internationally to make sure wrongdoers at PCAOB-registered firms are held accountable for misconduct, no matter where they are from.
