Welcome back to the PCG Podcast! In this episode, Hollis and Dave bask in the feel-good summer of Daniel Stern's Breaking Away (as we will continue to call it for the rest of our days), a brilliant 1979 film that somehow hasn't aged a day--and will make you feel eternally 19-years-old.

Thanks for getting to this one boys. This is easily one of my top 5 movies of all time. It is simply perfection and it is definitely one of those "comfort movies" that Davey mentioned. Random thoughts @ 2:30 am: - When I was a kid I always loved that Mike had a bike rack on HIS car for Dave. It just spoke volumes about their friendships. - Love the (no dialogue) scene where the dad goes back to his old stone cutting factory, walking the floor and reminiscing with his old coworkers fondly about what was clearly a tough gig. It pops to mind when I go back to visit some of my old bars (not equating stone cutting with slinging drinks, but you get me.) - You blew my freakin' mind with the Hart Bochner trivia! WHAT THE WHAT! Hans! Booby! *stumbles off to bed while singing "Indiana, Indianaaaaaa"

This one was a true labor of love for us. You're so right about this film being perfection. I'm often driven to distraction by "holes in the script," and I feel confident saying there aren't any here. It's so funny you bring up the bike rack on Mike's car, because Dave and I spoke for maybe twenty minutes (off camera) just about that bike rack, what it means and its larger implications: Mike doesn't mind that the bike rack kind of makes his cool car look like a family car because he loves Dave and Dave's his boy. But also Mike might not care because when it comes to sports competition he "gets it" and considers himself part of Dave's team. Perhaps Mike fought it at first? "Not on my cool car!" Then several trophy wins later, competition-hungry Mike is fastening the rack onto the car with a, "Who's ass are we kicking today, Dave?" I cannot believe we forgot the stone-cutting scene! We talked about the soft side of Mr Stohler, and his hidden depth of character, and that scene has it in spades. Such a great scene, and I totally get your bar connection. I occasionally go back to visit my old DJ haunts, and I feel light years away from who I was when I did that gig. As perfect as he is in Breaking Away, Hart Bochner will ALWAYS be Ellis in Die Hard to me. And would you believe Hart actually improvised the word "Bubbe" in his scene with Hans? Genius! Thanks for the comment! So glad you enjoyed the episode, and any friend of Dave's is a good friend of mine.

@@PopCultureGraveyard haha yes on all of that re: the bike rack! I pictured something similar happening off screen as well. Funny how such a small thing really adds to the backstory without saying a word. Great, great stuff. OH! and Dad's line he sits with Dave on the campus' stone bench that he and his crew made. "You're not a Cutter. I'm a Cutter" Ugh! So good. A Dad just doing what he had to do to give his goofball kid a better life. Yeah, that one hits for me. And right backatcha Hollis! Thanks again for a great podcast(s) and hope to talk movies and records (I have 5k+ of 'em 🙃) in person sometime! Cheers!

One of my favorites, thanks for covering it so expertly! I would add Slap Shot to the sports movie list that includes this and Bad News Bears. I was 12 when this came out and probably watched it first a couple of years after that. And it is as accurate a depiction of the late 70s as you can find. At least the US version of that time. Right down to the iron-on letters on their Cutter shirts. Maybe the lack of applause at the Cutter team reflected the crowds concern that they would be humiliated and by association humiliate all the locals in the crowd? Or maybe cutter was a slur, and it took them winning the race to reclaim the term? Great show, thank you.
