I always wanted an open reel tape drive to play around with and now have this Control Data drive connected to my PDP-11/23 via an Emulex controller. The system also has a RL removable disk pack (DL0:) along with the Tape Transport (MS0:)
Uhh - I just love the PDP equipment. Being an application engineer with Berlingske Media PrePress dept. (1985-2000) in Denmark and the quite large installation of editorial and advertersing systems from the (at that time) largest IT supplier of systems for the newspaper industries: Atex inc., and their PDP-11 / J11 Unibus systems heavely modified both hardware and OS wise.
We had an 11/23 at college in the 80s then later on we had an 11/73 both with RSTS. I've always dreamed of my own PDP-11 but never got beyond emulation.
Hi Ray. I worked at DEC as a tech on the floor. I am curious what controller is used on your 1123 to run the CDC tape drive. I remember RH11 controllers on 11/34s to run TE16s, however that was unibus. 11/23 is Q bus.
love the video. I have most of those parts except the 34. I just need an os. do you have spare rx02 or rl02 with rt11 or rsx11. if not I could send you some if you could make me a copy
That's a lovely system! My VAX-11/730's TU80 tape drive has the same mechanism, but it's mounted horizontally instead of vertically. The control panel is moved from the drive chassis to the front of the short rack, and the tape access door is hinged differently. It has the same screw lock for maintenance, but the drive pivots differently. I should make a video of my system one of these days.
