This video demonstrates some of the planning principles for VFR cross-country flights that were discussed in the PilotEdge VFR Workshop 3, along with the actual flight on the PE Network. The flight is a short one, from KMYF (Montgomery Field) to KRNM (Ramona Airport).

Over the past few months, I've been watching (and rewatching) the PilotEdge workshops. I recently checked the forums and discovered that you created these videos. I immediately recognized your voice from the recordings, as you consistently asked relevant questions and made insightful comments to Keith. Thank you for making these videos; your explanations are easy to follow and I find your videos calming to watch. Thanks!

I'm just getting into PilotEdge and understanding the charts. This is superbly and straightforwardly explained (without confusing things with rare exceptions) and I feel I'm quickly climbing the steep learning curve, which is great fun!

Mark, I love what you are doing here. I 'Grew up' as a pilot at Montgomery, Gillespie and Ramona. This would have made my flight training, and Instructors job, and my checkride(s), much easier! More importantly, I would have simply learned it better. Keep it up!

I appreciate the upload, noticed the PE workshop for this one was missing. Thanks for your contribution. :)

Great video. Really great demo of the value of skyvector for planning. Minor critique: You were too close on downwind which is why you were too high on turning final (and overshot final). Also after landing , I was taught dont raise the flaps on the runway, clean up after you have cleared the runway.. One day you might reach for the gear lever instead of flaps after landing..

Not sure if you are still monitoring these comments, but would it be possible to circle Montgomery or the surrounding area until you reached greater than 2400 ft so that you could then fly over Gillespie airspace? I know that wouldn't be efficient, but could it be done?
@markhargrove
@markhargrove 7 лет назад
The airspace around Montgomery is pretty complicated and there is almost literally no place to circle that isn't controlled airspace. You've got Class B airspace all around you (including SFC to 10K for SAN to the south and SFC to 3200 for Miramar to the north), KMYF's control zone extends up to 2900' for five miles around the airport. I suppose you could fly out towards Mt. Soledad (VPSMS), carefully staying in the 100/48 shelf and circle/climb there, then head back -- but you'd have to climb above 2900 to avoid the KMYF Class D, or call them and ask for transit. If I doubted my ability to climb to 2400 before reaching the Gillespie control zone, I think I'd just ask Montgomery tower if they would coordinate a transit of the KSEE airspace with Gillespie tower. If they're not super-busy, I suspect they'd help out (or at least release you in plenty of time to call KSEE to coordinate your own transit).

Didn't tower inform you to depart on the right downwind departure?? Not left.
@markhargrove
@markhargrove 10 лет назад
Yep, he did. I didn't even realize I'd made that mistake until I reviewed the video. Left hand departure is more normal for that airport and that's what I was expecting -- which shows how easy it is to get into trouble! Usually, you'll get called out on things like that on PE, which may mean the controller also thought he'd give me a left downwind, and so wasn't surprised to see me fly that departure. Definitely a mistake though. Good catch!
@Timmish2
@Timmish2 10 лет назад
Yeah, I'm sure he meant to give you the left downwind departure as you were departing a left runway. He spoke rather quickly as well. Really nice videos!

+Mark Hargrove Everytime I depart eastbound, ATC give me 28R and a right downwind departure. I use to ask "Eastbound departure, rightdownwind if possible".

There are too many links to possibly list. A great place to start, though, is the avsim forum.

Thanks, and extremely helpful. Any good links or resources for setting up FSX so I can practice evenings at home?

Hi Mark, great video! On the part where you discuss the DME distances for the various critical points, it doesn't seem like you're taking into account slant range (the most direct, diagonal distance from the base of the VOR to the plane). If we simply chose to ignore the error for slant range, would it still be pretty close to the actual lateral DME distance? I'm also guessing that since we're at low altitudes, that the slant range "error" would be pretty minimal?
@markhargrove
@markhargrove 7 лет назад
I did deliberately ignore slant range -- it takes a bit of explanation, and at low altitude it's really not much of a factor. It's a real "thing" to be conscious of, though. At a fairly common VFR cruise altitude of 5500' you'll notice your DME distance as you cross over a VOR to still be about 1 mile because you actually are a mile away from it -- straight overhead! Instrument procedures that use DME distances account for slant range.

hey btw there is a mini route above miramar that real life pilots use might want to look it up

yep it all depends on if they are "active" or igf they have any plane on the area

Thanks Mark! Great planning work and flight. However, it sounded like KMYF Tower gave you a RIGHT downwind departure, but you flew out on a LEFT downwind... or did I hear it wrong (at 31:20) ?

Mark Hargrove Thanks Mark, it's definitely on my "to get" list. I'm saving to build a new FSX computer. If I may put in a request, I'd love to see a few tutorials on flying the Mustang and using the G1000. Anyway, keep the videos coming! I've learn a lot from you!

Does pilot edge only hire real life or retired controllers? I know that the founder of the company was a vatsim controller for many years, I wonder if the company hires vatsim controllers? Assuming they demonstrate pro level abilities?
@markhargrove
@markhargrove 9 лет назад
The Lowmein I do believe their general practice is to primarily hire current, retired, or senior ATC students. I also believe they have one or two controllers on staff who have been trained-up within the company -- but almost everybody is a professional controller.
