Fiji deflate run number 3
September 12 2024
This about sums it up! Beautiful warm blue ocean and dreamy bumps! What else? It's like this every day!
Besides that amazing sentence, this is a typical run. Being one of my first here, I'm taking it easy... That means gear that works, and conservative tactics. I'm winging out about 2.5km for these deflates and it seems the perfect amount for now. It does leave me wanting a touch as far as distance but that leaves me in a state of psyched! In the future it also means I can ride harder knowing it doesn't have to be too sustainable. It is also allowing me to test a higher volume of foils and setups.
For these first runs though the Axis 1201 is just perfect for me. It's a safe foil in that it can handle most anything I'm likely to face in this environment or any environment really. It a 1318cm2 foil, although Axis endearingly calls it the 1201ArtPro due to calling all their foils by the wingspan... Im used to it and personally like it as the wing span for me is what I'm focussed on. For most of us though, the area is the normal currency.
Why am I interested in wing span? On water stability! I notice a radical change in stability when I drop down in span, area not so much. I think it is to do with the roll of the board being dampened via span... Forward or pitch drag doesn't end up being as much of a factor for me.
My main goal for these runs has been to get on foil, and that means being able to stand on my board in unknown conditions. Dont get me wrong I love a fast turny foil as much as the next winger! but I also know the consequences if I end up underfoiled! I don't have unlimited energy for multiple failed paddle ups, or even for short links on foil... My bread and butter is getting on foil and staying up there!
Anyway enjoy the video! Be good, be kind, and most important of all keep sending it!! Yew!!!
