Damn, even without the cultural symbolism, exchanging a THOUSAND year old family heirloom with a fullly recorded history that precise would be a massive gift, even if just a plain sword. I was expecting that kind of reaction from the Ambassador. An excellent read.

Nice story, reminds me of the lost arts. When I lived in California the paper had a story about a home invasion, and the father and eldest son about 18 fought off the 4 attackers. Both had taken self defense classes together for years.

Sitting here looking at a confederate copy of an 1853 British Enfield sword, except longer and wooden scales with the correct rivet pattern and of course much more course. Maybe it has a future. Unlike the Brit examples this is sharp with a skill no one but a smith could have done. No markings I can find, so a "maybe" that I believe in.
