+ffjsb True, I'll agree, this department needs an engineer on these builds but all welders (to my knowledge) are required to read up and study engineering. The trailer tanker is set up to haul water as well as fuel. Those tanks are built with dividers (I forget the technical term) that break the sloshing that goes on in the tank. As I'm a welder myself and currently going for my certification in stick welding, I have to do a lot of reading to do on engineering, blueprints and such so I can build or repair stuff like this. As of this fall, I start firefighting 1, I will use this knowledge to help my department out.

If you weld something for the fire dept., do you have liability coverage in case something happens and someone gets killed or injured?? Designing equipment is best left to a PROFESSIONAL. And a fuel tanker's capabilities are quite different than a water tanker. There's a BIG difference in weight between the two liquids.

ffjsb I never said welding has anything to do with vehicle handling characteristics. Proper welding has everything to do with structures that need to be fused together. Welders need the knowledge and skills and a certification showing that we are more than capable of designing safely. Welders do a lot more designing of equipment and such, because its what we do. I'll say this now, I'm still a welder student and in the fall I'll be getting my welding certification and starting firefighter 1. The time I need the coverage is when I starting welding for a career. So, welding for the fire department, that all depends on what goes on.

The best welder in the world is not qualified to design a vehicle, just how the components are joined together as far as the welding is concerned. You may be able to weld a fantastically done tank, but if the tank itself doesn't fit in with the capabilities of the frame, suspension, brakes, center of gravity, etc., then your welding abilities really don't mean anything. Training as a welder in no way is going to qualify you to design a fire apparatus. Good luck with your welding career and FF1 though.
