I travelled in India for a month with a XD Design Bobby Bizz for daily carry and a Tortuga Setout Divide (26-34l) for clothes and to leave stuff I didn't want to carry around site seeing such as my 8" tablet. I used a cheap packable duffel to protect the backpack in cargo and to hold the extra stuff I was taking as gifts and the jacket I purchased there. For internal flights the limit of 5-7 kg for carry on was only enough for the tech gear (camera, phone, tablet, shaver, toothbrush etc.) so two bag are needed.
Pack Hacker, just wanted to tell you how much I DESPISE you......How dare you give me great information and get me hooked onto the travel bag game How dare you give honest reviews beyond listing specs like you know it all. How dare you talk me into buying not two but THREE bags based on your recommendation. You sir, are something else. Seriously though, thank you for everything! I bought this Peak Design bag, and made my own RU-vid video to try and help prospective buyers. I love this bag, but it's not without fault!
The fact that they offer a backpack mode should be considered a pro, of course it’s not gonna be a great backpack... it’s not supposed to be! But the fact they went out of their way to just offer that possibility is definitely something to praise and applaud, NOT CRITIC!
Awesome bag. 2lb/.9 kg! That speaks to my heart. It makes it ideal for one bag travel when dealing with 7kg weight allowance. It seems to me that outside of the US they are quite keen to weigh bags. It rarely happened to me in the US, but since moving to Australia my bag is weighed EVERY time I approach a ticket counter. Even on domestic flights here! So thanks PD for a truly LIGHT one bag travel bag!
Hey Jeffrey - thanks for sharing your experience with us! Glad you're digging this duffel. What's your go-to pack? We'd love to hear what works for you! 😊🙌 - Rebecca
@@PackHacker My go to pack has been the Tom Bihn Brain Bag. Fantastic bag for one bag travel and weighs 2lbs , 15oz. Asides from great functionality, it is light. However, I am going to try to use this PD duffel in its place. Primarily because I can save that 15 ounces! The PD duffel seems to have the right organizational peices and a very open and packable interior. It may be my new one bag travel go to. This is uncertain as I dont generally like duffels and I LOVE the Brain Bag. But I am going to give the PD an honest try. Weight, and the 7kg limit for carry opn, is often missed in your (and other) reviews. For example, I love the PD backpack, just like you. But there is no way I could take on the additional weight of that pack. I would love to see you start using some sort of formula in your bag ratings that considers the % of the 7kg weight limit used by a bag. That helps tell the story of what you can pack. I love all the features, but would I sacrifice a pair of pants for them?
Great review, as always. I can always trust you guys to give your honest impressions on products. The one thing that surprised me was the 8.1 score on this; it seemed like you were singing its praises with the exception of a few small details, I guessed it'd be an 8.5 or something higher than that, to be honest. Comparing it to the Aer Duffle (8.3), the cons are basically "the extra details peak added weren't amazing"; but they didn't really need to include an id pocket, magnets, or backpack mode. Meanwhile the complaints on the (more expensive by 40 dollars) AER duffle was that it's uncomfortable and its quick grab pocket is deficient.
Hey Praxis-Cat - glad you're digging the review. We recommend checking out our Rating System here packhacker.com/about/rating-system/ to see how we rate these products. Hope this helps! 😊 - Rebecca
Hey shahmi ss! In testing, we had this concern initially, but in actual use things stay fastened nicely - especially the plastic buckles on the shoulder strap - those stay really locked in. - Tom
When I was younger, I have travelled with duffels. Later on I've switched to a suitcase with wheels, but never was too comfortable with it nor the backpacks for other than daily or touristic purposes. I am thinking of getting back to duffels, mainly because they are usually much lighter than (PD) travel backpacks. This duffel looks realy nice, the only thing I dislike about its aesthetics is, that it is way too wide. It should not be imo designed for the photography cubes in mind and should be taller instead. Looks weird when carrying over the shoulder and what I really hate is often suggested vertical carry-on, which ruins the overal aesthetics even more ... Most probably going to get it anyway, well, because that's what a PD addict does :-)
I love the new shirt. I’m guessing the duffel is significantly lighter than their really nice, but slightly overweight travel pack? Hopefully it’s also significantly less than $300. I’d have to try it in person, but I feel like the wide squat design would be really cumbersome to shoulder carry, and the slit style main opening would be less than ideal for accessing the bag (I mean the side pockets are horseshoe but not the main??)
Hey blondre3000 - thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! The Peak Design Travel Duffel packhacker.com/travel-gear/peak-design/travel-duffel-35l/ weighs in at 2lbs and the Peak Design Travel Backpack packhacker.com/travel-gear/peak-design/travel-backpack/ is 4.55lbs. 😊👍 - Rebecca
I love everything about this bag except for its wideness. 3 years later and I'm still waiting for Peak to release a slimmer duffel. My bag is due for replacement soon!
does this bag fit under the seat of an airplane? Also, can you fit items on top of the packing cubes? It looks like there's some space on the top part of the bag. Great video!
Hey Caleb - there's a lot of room on top of the packing cubes and depending on the airline you're flying with, if you only packed one level of packing cubes it could fit under the seat of an airplane. However, we do recommend checking with your individual airline before you fly, because size specifications do differ. Hope this helps! 😊👍 - Rebecca
No way in hell this thing is going under the seat if its more than 50% packed. This is a really wide duffel. Notice how it has more of a trash bag shape than your typical cylinder duffel design.
Hey Yamil - we have no plans to review this pack in the immediate pipeline, but we're currently testing the WANDRD HEXAD Carryall Duffel, you can see our initial thoughts here packhacker.com/travel-gear/wandrd/hexad-carryall-duffel/ 👍 - Rebecca
Which one would you recommend between this and the Patagonia Black Hole 40L? Looks like this has better pockets but maybe smaller overall space. Thanks!
ENB90 Agreed, Chase Reeves pointed this out also. I ordered the Black colorway and I couldn’t get over how the handles felt. Not sure if the leather on the green colorway feels better. The shoulder strap also didn’t have a lot of grip and slips pretty easily.
@@l3mnhead I feel like they could've done a dedicated hand carry strap that had an interlocking mechanism similar to Pacsafe and how they have their locks connect to each other on their venturesafe packs. As for a backpack strap, potentially have one that has more padding where our shoulders would be placed. I still like the overall design and look of the back, but for perhaps $15-20 more I'd like to have better straps(could be one strap or 2 dedicated ones)
I know this is an old video but the shot from the front is too tight. I recommend zooming out on the camera a tad just to see the bag a little bit more.
Hey Alexander - you can check out our initial thoughts on the Patagonia Black Hole MLC here packhacker.com/travel-gear/patagonia/black-hole-mlc/ - stay tuned for the full review! 😊 - Rebecca
No designated laptop/tablet pocket? T T It looks much much better looking than the tortuga setout duffle, but in terms of organization pd’s is way behind
I could increase the size from a 35L to 70L by just making the zipper higher, and when the extra space is not needed, just fold it down. Simple tnx EdA
Dude can you guys help me out here. I’ve bought multiple products from you since the gecko. SF resident. Your plastic clips on your main strap keep breaking. First one lasted maybe a week second one through warranty literally didn’t last 5 mins. No joke bag was empty only had your tech pouch & wash pouch inside it. As soon as I put the strap over my head buckle snapped before it hit my shoulder. Please help me out
Hey! From our experience, we've found that this can really depend on the airline you're flying with, so we always recommend checking with your individual airline before you fly. We also have a new carry-on compliance feature on all of our full reviews. And, even though this is a guideline for carry-on compliance rather than for personal items, if it's not carry-on compliant, chances are it's not going to be compliant for a personal item either. packhacker.com/travel-gear/category/bags-and-luggage/travel-backpacks/ packhacker.com/travel-gear/category/bags-and-luggage/daypacks/ Hope this helps! 😊 - Rebecca
Hi Suresh! You can find buying links on our website. I'm not sure which companies ship to India, but our written review would be a good starting point to see where it is sold. - Austin packhacker.com/travel-gear/peak-design/travel-duffel-35l/
outrageous, what do you mean by saying that if the zip fails the bag is still 'functional'...?? this statement is ridiculous for someone that claims to be reviewing bags instead of a manufacturer influencer.. enough said..
Is there an inside?? Since you didn't show an inside I guess there is no inside. But sure is swell it is 100% recycled and has neet-o leather accents. You lost me. I am needing specific interior dimensions. As I am not carrying water, the number of liters is a useless spec. May or may not catch you on the next product I'm looking for.
