This reminds me of a story when my Dad was young boy, 1938 or 1939 and some one gave him some peanuts to plant.. He told me that he took extra care of these exotic plants, here in Nor Cal, peanuts growing was unheard of... as the season past the Dad was at a lost on what he did wrong... Not one nut grew on the plants... After the plants died, my Grandfather made my Pop's spade up the garden.. A young boy with a spade discovered that all the care that he put into these dead plants paid off.... Pop's is 85 and still love peanuts....

This was a serendipitous upload! We harvested (BY HAND!) two 70-foot rows of Virginia Jumbos at the Itsy Farm today. Got about 45 pounds. Took about four hours. Lessons learned: 1.Next year, more rows 2.Next year, rows farther apart 3.Next year, plants farther apart 4.Next year, mechanical harvesting! We're in Meriwether County GA...just up the road from you.

Carver certainly did make an incredible contribution to agriculture with his research and application of the peanut. The world owes him a huge dept of gratitude.

i learned that they do not grow on trees. they grow easily in all kinds of soil. you turn them upside down...so the sun and wind DRY them. that animals eat the roots and plant left over for feed - and you get a lot of peanuts on each small plant. THANK YOU- kalan, 11

As a swede I feel that my language gave me a clear advantage over you English only speaking folks. In Swedish peanut is translated "jordnöt", jord meaning mud/ dirt/ earth.

I am growing them in Newfoundland Canada- zone 5 in my area. I started them indoors and planted out to the greenhouse in June. They are looking fabulous, and I'm hoping to harvest by end of Oct. They take a long time to grow- even longer in cooler regions, so I am glad my greenhouse has heat when I need for frosty nights :)...try some, if you haven't already- fascinating plant!
