The cook(Cuba Gooding Jr) that manned the anti-aircraft gun was a true story that happened in that battle.

One thing they got right with this film is that it really was a surprise attack. Whole battle sequence is also brutal.

I honestly like this movie. Yes it’s historically inaccurate, but really love the sound and visual effects. Pearl Harbor will never be forgotten.

The DoLittle Raid took place on April 18, 1942. About two weeks later the Battle of the Coral Sea. And a month later the Battle of Midway on June 4, 1942. In that 50 days the U.S. went from a purely defensive position in the Pacific to sinking 4 of Japans front line carriers and ending Japan's ambitions in the Pacific.

Doris (pronounced Dorie) Miller, the cook who manned the machine gun, now has an aircraft carrier named after him; U.S.S. Doris Miller. It's scheduled to be launched by the US Navy in 2029 and commissioned in 2032.

And the Doolittle Raid was actually quite the feat, and we were at war declared with the Japan at the time. They were caught unaware because we were genuinely out of range they totally did not think that we could get planes anywhere close to the mainland. Even though the bombers did you damage it wasn't all that devastating physically but it shook them to the Core especially in their morale. It showed Japan that we are coming. Doolittle would get the Congressional Medal of Honor for it and amazingly a great amount of our crews came home

The Japanese fighter plane y'all saw Danny and Rafe shooting at were called Zeros and in order for them to fly at over 350 mph they had to sacrifice a lot of armor so with a few well placed bullets from a 50 caliber AA gun or that BAR light machine gun y'all saw once the two pilots were up in the air the Zero would stand a pretty good chance of going down in flames. And in case y'all are wondering AA stands for Anti-Aircraft and BAR is short for Browning Automatic Rifle, the rifles the Japanese patrol men were carrying were Type 99 Arisaka bolt action rifles, the grenade you saw Gooz grab was a Type 99 Kiska, and the pistols being used by the downed bomber pilots were Browning M1911 which are still being used by American service men and women. And if anyone is curious about why I know so much about weaponry from WW2 I have a book on every infantry weapon, armored vehicle, tanks, aircraft, artillery, and ships used by both The Allies and The Axis

Fun fact: those who survived the attack have the option of being buried at sea alongside those who perished on the Arizona even those who weren’t on the ship

In the initial attack at Pearl Harbor, we lost about 3,000 people, which did not include wounded. A lot of what happened in the battle is accurate. We were able to get a couple p-40's in the air, and they were able to do damage, but not a lot. Cuba Gooding Jr. Actually plays Dory Miller, a cook, who manned a gun, was able to down zeros, and got the Navy Cross. A Medal of Honor winner was also depicted in the film Manning a gun, though I don't remember his name, but he was there the entire attack. Saw an interview with him in the 60th anniversary, and he was quite the character, old man still full of life.

As strange as this sounds, there are some movies that are generally speaking not very good, but are great for reaction videos. This is one of them.

Its so sad because they all woke up one day thinking it was just going to be another relax day... never knowing it would change the rest of their lives..

My grandpa’s college roommate was one of the Doolittle Raiders. He made it back fine. My grandpa saw him once at his return party. They wanted to make plans to meet sometime, but he was killed in a plane crash soon after.

U guys have to watch Midway too, it has more background and story towards World war2 and many more missions and also the time span of how long the war lasted, and this movie was first insight to how brutal the war was and how many lives were lost, and the bravery of all the soldiers who fought for their countries.

I saw this movie when it came out....and I've been in love with Kate Beckinsale ever since. LOL

The Doolittle bombers crash landed in China, but parts of it were occupied by Japanese forces.

This movie made me wear the A2 Leather jacket with the Doolittle Raiders and the Flying Tigers insignia along with the bloodchit.

Japanese Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, who planned the attack on Pearl Harbor would reportedly write in his diary: “I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve.” They did. And the Allies dropped two atomic bombs on Japan, which would finally end the war. But it also entered the world into the Nuclear Age.

Unpopular opinion, I absolutely love this film. Granted, I know it’s not historically accurate. But, it was one of the earliest mature films I remember watching & no matter how many times I watch it, I get emotional every single time. I finally got to visit Pearl Harbor this past Christmas & it was a completely overwhelming experience for me. Even still seeing bullet holes in the hangers. I couldn’t help but feel an indescribable amount of emotions.

Both of my grandparents were Pearl Harbor survivors. My grandfather was in the navy and heard the continuous ringing of a church bell that morning. He saw the planes in the sky and ran on foot to his navy ship. He said he ran through a large field and could see the pilots grinning at him while trying to shoot him because they were so close to the ground. My grandmother went with her two sons into an underground tunnel and witnessed the USS Arizona sinking before she went in the tunnel. My grandparents didn’t know if each other had survived for 6 weeks.

Kate Beckinsale is hands down my personal #1 actress. War is a horrific thing, I have 2 younger cousins serving. And when Russia attacked it completely scared me and I just kept praying for them, their ok now. And my grandpa from my mother's side he died of old age but he also served too. These war movies didn't really make cry but after he died now their are times I do cry. When I was little we would always greet each other with a little salute, at his funeral I gave him my final salute to him before going down in the ground.

My uncles ship was torpedoed in half by the japanese during the later stages of the war. His friends were eaten by sharks around him. He was a good man but deeply troubled, i remember him staring into space several times, i was only 7 or 8 but i respected him so much. I hope he knows I loved him.b

I actually met 2 Pearl Harbor survivors in high school when they came came to my world history class to speak. Saw them the moment I walked in the room and after putting my stuff down at my desk I walked over and chatted for a bit and shook their hands thanking them for their service to the country.

Michael Bay wanted to recreate Titanic in this film, Cameron did so well mixing the love story with the tragedy of the ship, that Bay wanted to do the same in Pearl Harbor. Several actors from this movie were later in the movie Black Hawk Down

i’ve watched this movie since i was little. i watched it with my grandpa that was in the korean war. his brothers were in WWII so i think it was more personal for him

38:15 fun fact this part is actually inaccurate. in fact the real one is even more depressing. in reality, they didn't even try to save them because of all the chemicals inside the water of the sinking ship have a huge risk of igniting killing more people than the ones trapped. so trying to pry open the metal and take them out was too dangerous... the only thing they heard was tapping from the hull for hours... until it stopped. :(

The Doolittle raid was done only once ... nobody had ever flown a bomber off a carrier, or ever did it again. The Japanese Army in China tortured and murdered 10,000 civilians in China searching for Doolittle's raiders. In a subsequent pacification campaign the Japanese killed 250,000 Chinese civilians and tested biological weapons on them. The reaction of the Japanese Navy to their failure to protect Tokyo led to the Battle of Midway, which was a great defeat for Japan.

Many Americans blamed Yamamoto for the Attack on Pearl Harbor He Opposed attacking Pearl Harbor. But he carried out the attack anyway because he had no other choice, even though he’s a High ranking Admiral He was still just a Soldier, If he stood up to Tojo or the Emperor himself he would’ve been Beheaded.

I think the reason they say "love hurts" is because love, in many cases, is denied. Either one person loves someone and the other person doesn't love him / her or they love each other and their family doesn't want them to be in love.

This is such an emotional movie. I wish people would just enjoy the story for what it is instead of constantly whining that, "It'S nOt HiStOrIcAlLy AcCuRaTe!" There are plenty of other movies that are more historically accurate or documentaries if you want more education instead of entertainment.

My dad volunteered for the Army Air Corps in August 1940, and learned how to fly in a biplane. By the time of Pearl Harbor, he was already "the old timer" at 20 years old.

The Japanese did not mean to sneak attack, that would have been against the Bushido code ingrained in them from the feudal times of the Samurai. Secretary Hull kept the Japanese Ambassador and staff waiting in his waiting room out of arrogance. A storm blocked the Navy radio network, and the Army and Navy were not allowed to use each other's Radio networks and the message had to go by Western Union from Alaska. Meanwhile, the Ambassador from Japan did not get to inform the USA that Japan had declared war and the attack that was to happen thirty minutes later was done a little late but still before Ambassador Nomura Could pass along Prime Minister Tojo's declaration of war. It was an accident caused by Hull.

There is so much that stemmed from WWII. The Nuclear bomb. The United Nations. The Cold War. The Ukrainian war, now. There is also much more peacetime comparatively to the eras before WWII. It's very fascinating to comprehend. Tragically, WW1 was supposed to be "the war to end all wars."

I think Danny was right about the whole situation. He left he behind to fight a battle he don’t need to fight. He chose to leave. And they both mourned the lost of the person that was closest to them. And the fell for each other. Nothing wrong or shitty about that.

My Great Grandfather was at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941. He was in the Mess Hall when the attack started, he ran out with his Marines and saw Zero’s fly by and remembers the detail of a Japanese Pilot turned and looked at him with a smile as he hit the pay load. My Great Grandfather was at Pearl Harbor, fought in almost every single damn battle including Guadalcanal, Iwo Jima in the First wave. He passed away last year at 98 year old. RIP Marine Sergeant Major William Braddock.

You can’t please everybody. I’ve heard several people (all guys) diss on the love story. Glad you liked it. A few historical notes: The Japanese did want and hope for peace, but they were preparing for the worst. Their declaration of war was intended to arrive just before the attack began. But they had reduced the staff at their embassy, that was to deliver it. By the time they had decoded the message, the attack had already happened. The explosion on the Arizona is thought to have killed over 1,000 people. I was bothered by the part where they couldn’t cut the guys out of the ship in time. I have learned, since then, that it didn’t happen. They were just able to get the men out in time at the one or two holes they made. According to one author, there were 9,834 ships sunk in WW2, including military and merchant. I completely agree with you about thousands dying due to other people’s ambitions.

Horrible what happened to those sailors trapped in the bottom of that ship. The Japanese lost a lot more in the end though.

last February I was on a family trip in Honolulu at the disney moana resort me and my brother visited the pearl harbor memorial to pay our respects...and took the tour it was something I will never forget, especially the memorial over the U.S.S Arizona and seeing the ship submerged just underneath the surface I never felt so much emotion of sadness, reading the list of the casualties that happened. I recommend to anyone who visits Honolulu should visit the pearl harbor memorial.

My dad (a veteran a HUGE history buff) actually was on set for this movie 🤭 I was soooo jealous and upset when he came home and told me bc he wasn’t stark struck 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ He was the fire chief at the base where they shot certain scenes so he met Ben & Cuba and some others but he I remember he told me “kiddo why am I impressed by people who make millions to play pretend all day??” 😂🤔 hmmm #dadwisdom

Saw this in theaters with my dad and we both loved it. I've seen Tora Tora Tora and Midway but this one is my favorite because it tells a story alongside the historical facts, and while the events may not be entirely accurate it still hits home the tragedy of the attack and the resulting strike back. I like that this story is told through the eyes of two childhood friends and the love story felt like a completely believable one. The love triangle was a direct result of war and not any of them being unfaithful; it's an all too common thing to have two people get together while trying to support one another with their grief over a shared loss. Seeing this happen in the movie makes me think of how many soldiers have gone through a similar situation throughout history. While these characters may be fictional, their story can easily represent hundreds or even thousands of people that history has forgotten.

It's very sad that we live in a world that's become filled with war/conflict and hate. I haven't seen this movie for a few years and this is a reminder of one of many conflicts that have happened throughout history and so many lost their lives. If they fought, or were on the sidelines it's still sad.

Visiting Pearl Harbor for me was beautiful and emotional. And, you can still see oil bubbles floating fast to the surface from the buried ship in the water.

One of the aspects of Pirl Harbor many mis is how lucky America was that the fleet was in port. Had they been at sea Every ship would have sunk to deep to be recovered and taken their entire crews with them. As it was, they had sunk in shallow water making salvage possible and crew members could swim ashore. On December 7th I had one Grandfather in a POW camp in Northern Ireland having been one of the survivors from the KM Bismarck and one was helping to design and build B-17s in Seattle Wa. and then in 42 joined and flew them from England till 45.

Leading up to the Attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan had been able to move about in the pacific and take much control but they were short on natural resources mainly oil. they divisive that a critical blow to the American fleet at Pearl would allow them 6 month to quickly move about the pacific and take what land they needed to win the war for them. the US only thinking that an attack could come by stealth and sabotage, decided to park the ships near each other to prevent that. instead the Japanese sailed northeast of Hawaii and launched their fighters so the US radar facilities would think they were Americans. Luckily our aircraft carriers(primary target) had sailed to sea just before the attack so the Japanese couldn't change their strategy.

Crazy how this movie came out two months before 9/11 so imagine going to the theatres to watch an historic disastrous event as a movie to only then seeing the biggest modern day attack just two months later crazy with ur own eyes

25:33 Crazy thing is, that's the same type of bomb that destroyed the USS Arizona. And it's not even a bomb at all, it's a freakin 16.1 inch Armored-Piercing Shell that the IJN Nagato battleship used, they just put fins on the sides and modified it with a propeller fuse to turn it into some sort of high-explosive armored-piercing bomb dropped from Kate Bombers at high altitude.

Some.P-40's were able to respond and score kills, but not like the scenario portrayed in the film. And yes, there was some actual footage used in the newsreels. They weren't expecting Dolittles attack. They encountered Japanese troops on mainland China.

one the MAJOR inaccuracies of this movie was the attacking of hospitals and civilian targets. in real life, it was revealed at one point that Admiral Yamamoto had given STRICT orders to not engage civilian targets or hospitals. it was great seeing Dorie Miller receiving the Navy Cross at the end of the movie. for a bit of context... the Navy Cross is the US Navy's 2nd highest award, ranking below only the Medal of Honor.

The bomb that hit the Arizona was 1 of 10 bombs. Shortly after 8am, at 10,000ft, the first 3 fell and caused only minor damage to the ship, while the 4th glanced off the corner of turret #2 and went through 5 decks into the powder room. The explosion in actuality killed 1749 people. Another 27 drowned as she sank, and the last one was shot from the ship's tower from a straffing attack. There's a clip of the actual explosion and you could see a bomb barely miss the ship right before the explosion occurs. Truly terrible day.

On the afternoon of December 10th (only two days after Pearl Harbour, due to being on the other side of the International Date Line), the British “Force Z” was attacked by Japanese torpedo bombers off the coast of Mayla (now Malaysia). The attack resulted in the loss of the battleship HMS Prince of Wales and the battlecruiser HMS Repulse along with 840 men.

The real person Cuba Gooding Jr. Was playing, was awarded the navy cross for what he did that day, he was the 1st African American to be awarded the navy cross. Sadly he was killed later in the war. His name was Doris Miller, the navy has named the newest Aircraft carrier in his honor.

Y'all should watch Midway then watch The Pacific series. I think you'll like it. One another note try watching Flags of our father (USA point of view) and Letters from Iwo Jima (Japan's point of view). Also watch Unbroken, a true story of an incredible American POW held in a camp near Tokyo.

I think Jon Voight (Angelina Jolies father) played such a good version of FDR in this film that he deserved gis own movie!!!! His role & performance was super underrated in this movie even tho most ppl hate this film cuz it kinda leached off of Titanic in alot of ways , it was still a great picture

I was stationed at Pearl Harbor. Where Rafe and Danny's jets were stored is Ford Island. I took classes on that island. The memorials are still there. You can walk over the memorial and see look at the ships 😪😓😩😫

The "slice of cake" cliffs are the south east coast of England. The so called White Cliffs of Dover. Royal Air Force Spitfires vs German Messerschmitt Bf109s. Most people think it's supposed to be the Battle of Britain, but not in that time line. It's 1941.

Only a few American planes survived and they did down a few Japanese planes. Japan sent 353 planes to attack Pearl Harbor completely by surprise.😪 And as horrible as the attack on Pearl Harbor was, September 11, 2001 (9-11) was worse.😪
