I think it’s even funnier, I don’t think in this interview but in another they were asked why yellow Ledbetter was an outtake from Ten and they argue for a minute and then Eddie just admits it’s because he couldn’t think of lyrics.
Anyone who’s recorded music, especially in a studio and a fairly unlimited time budget (by which I mean to include us home bedroom studio dudes with our Apogee interface and Bluebird mic lol he’ll we’re probably the worst since we truly have no time budget pressure lol essentially) knows exactly what he’s talking about lol the key is to go through and take the best parts from each tale because there’s almost no way one take with all best parts for a song.
The very first time I heard Evenflow, I was working as a sound engineer in a mobile truck, recording Lollapalooza in Seattle. Just before Pearl Jam was supposed to start, someone kicked a cable out of the splitter box on stage. So I had to run from behind the stage, up a ladder to the stage, and I found the unconnected cable and popped it in about 60 seconds before they launched into the song. I was about ten feet from the drum riser. I damn near forgot that I was working! 😂
Do you have any idea which line it was? Like was it an overhead mic for the drums, or Vedder's microphone? Probably could have gotten by not getting an overhead plugged in on time ;)
I remember that I heard Evenflow on my neighbors radio and wanted to jump up and yell”did everyone hear what I just heard”. It was the most amazing song and I still remember that moment to this day!
It was WAY cooler than the actual guys in the band are. Especially Vedder. The American Bono. But yeah, my old man and I had the exact same reaction hearing it on the radio. It was very different than the other stuff being played at the time. That sound was a refreshing change at that period of time.
It was in a distant early warning site bar run by the department of National defence on sites from the border between Canada and the U.S.A. In the high arctic. Fully licensed bars where a beer was $1:25 and a high ball was $1:50 per drink. Had so many foggy memories from my time working on the replacement to the Dewline which was called the north warning system. Made bid bucks first time I spent 11 months straight in camp.
10 to this day is one of the best albums to ever be recorded. The first I ever heard them was Alive on MtV. I fell in love and bought the album. On cassette of course, through Columbia. I did send my penny though and bought more cassettes.
First song that got me into Pearl Jam I resisted their popularity for a long time but I love Evenflow and now I love the entire catalog and the band as people and musicians

I stopped listening to their stuff after No Code (which wasn't a good record). Ten is a perfect record and it would be pretty much impossible for them to get anything that good recorded again, but maybe I should give the new one a chance.
Everyone's different. I liked no code and definitely yield. It's funny Ten being most peoples favorite is the bands least favorite. My wife and I just saw them for the 30th time in LA and they are still an awesome live band. I can respect what you like and dislike, we all have different taste. I happen to love all their music. I feel ya hard on that one. I miss the 90s so much. Including the music. I wasn't even a teenager. I was in my late 20s into my 30s. That decade beats my teen years by far.
One of my favorite songs 1992 in the summer. Play that on the radio again and again could not get enough of it going to the beach, read surf and then heading back to the house to have some suds and some good dinner.
Its clear shows that stone is a life for this band. He is one of the greatest song writer and composer besides eddie, mike n jeff. Just look at all their songs, so brilliant n nvr will be a band like pearl jam anymore, music in their blood and soul. All the lyrics are out of this world for instance indifference, garden, black and deep.
I still love that album. These guys woke me up to the i to vi chord change (or variations) which is such a great sound and all over Ten. Even Flow (E to C), Jeremy (A to F), Alive (A to F), Black (E to C), etc.
Crazy to think that I grew up with their music since the early '90's. Seeing them here takes me back to being a sophomore in high school. Makes me feel like a teenager again even though they're just a few years older than me.
I always used to imagine how amazing it must've been to witness the beginning of like, The Doors, or Zepplin. Then i realized that i had the honor of growing up to bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana. It's all perspective. It just took me about 20 years to know it.
You're in for quite a show mate. I saw them a few years ago and it's a great experience. Eddie's voice is flawless and they sound just like the records.
This is the greatest MTV unplugged live performance I have ever seen. Eddie’s voice and performance is just unfreaking believable. The whole band as a matter of fact! That’s some insane drumming
I forgot about that. Who played on the album version? Jack Irons? By the way, the live version with Dave A is the best version. I like Matt Cameron, but he's a soulless metronome compared to Dave.
I can remember my plan and a great and grand plan it was for a very long time. My plan was for Pearl Jam to forever be my new favorite group and i would just stay in there some where. No matter where or when i always answered my new favorite band is Pearl Jam and they would be like you know they have been around for 5 years then 10 then 20 and it was great while it lasted but in all honesty they were my last new favorite until about six months ago i found this amazing band from Chicago named smashing pumpkins, they are really cool and if you never heard them you should check them out
Pro tip: you can tour the studio where they recorded Ten, Temple of the Dog, Dirt, and countless other records. Even in 2024 (assuming it's an off day with no scheduled sessions) it's super low-key. "Oh yeah, Eddie and Chris recorded the vocals for Hunger Strike right where you're standing. Wanna hear an outtake track of Andy Wood playing that piano right over there on Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns?" Surreal.

So much of what made Pearl Jams music unforgettable early on was their drummer. When they fired Dave, their sound totally changed, for the worse. 10 was a masterpiece, Animals was ok, at best. The rest of their work is barely average.
I always think of the Adam Sandler impersonation whenever I hear this song. 😂 But seriously, I may not be into Pearl Jam's music, but I respect the hell out of them for at least trying to stand up to Ticketmaster. 🤘
Yeah, they used to be really hard on themselves & eachother back in the day. ..You can hear Dave A. throw his sticks across the room at the end of "Rearviewmirror" on the VS album. & those are just a few examples..
