I'm a 60 year old black man but I know good music when I hear this is one of the greatest rock and roll song of all time let's rock in this free world love everyone
Neil just saunters on ... and the whole arena explodes! All the smiles in the band. So great! God, there's nothing greater than a great band in full flight.

In the summer of ‘93 Soundgarden and Pearl Jam opened for Neil Young at Exhibition stadium in Toronto. The friends I was with were all able to sneak onto the floor but I stayed put when I noticed a security guy had eye-lock on me. I watched the show by myself at the back end of the stadium. When Neil Young was done his set, I kept telling those around me not to leave. Then Neil came back onstage with both opening bands for an encore that included this song. It was truly amazing.
young is one of those artists who can transcend different sub genres in rock...blues,bluegrass, grunge, hard rock, metal, folk and even country,a true legend
+Hunter bermard Correct, and his voice is still as pure and distinctive as ever. Unlike Bob Dylan, for whom I paid a gross amount of money to see last year and he turned out to be an embarrassment.
WOW. That was already very solid then "Uncle Neil" walks on to the stage and the whole band gravitates to him and he lifts them to a new level. This is a guy that was already a star before they were even born, yet you can tell how much of an absolutely fat time they were all having. Legends never die!
That was hands down the best live version that I have ever seen - nothing that I've previously seen comes close. I was blown away by Pearl Jam's guitarists (sorry I don't know their names) getting down with Neil Young. Eddie Vedder seemed blown away it all..... The drummer was incredible throughout!. I might listen to this rendition 10 more times before going to sleep tonight!
Vedder is like classic rock's #1 fan. He loves to play with the legends. I heard Vedder in an interview say the best thing about being a rock star is that you get to meet rock stars.
Even in these times of the zombie apocalypse, there can be rare and wonderous moments of unifying, soul uplifting joy. When tough old rockers can bop around a stage with their buddies and just crank out a mob favorite, all is right with the world. Keep bopping, Uncle Neil.
Totally choked me up when Neil Young came onstage! Obvious delight and respect from Eddie and the band for his venerable bad assedness. Truly a legend! I get goosebumps!
That was so bad-ass. I was there that night. As Tom Waits would say: "That too is a lie". I was raised to not like Neil Young. You know the Skynyrd thing, and a lot of guys hated his guitar playing and singing. I went to see Social Distortion open for Neil at the Long Beach Arena in 1992. I was gonna leave After Social D. I stayed and was blown away. Neil was so loud and distorted and loud I became converted. I bought 15 of his albums the next day. If you can't change your mind, you can't change anything.
@@sunsync Thanks sunsync; that conflict was way overblown. I think some people were very offended by Neil's lyrics, even though they may not have thought it through far enough. I've heard a lot of disparaging remarks against people from So Ca. Sometimes they're accurate, and sometimes they don't apply to me.
@@number7717 Thanks number7; I've never heard/did not know it existed. I'm going to take back some of the bad things I've been saying about you. Ha. Now I'll tell 'em you are the best All-Time! Thanks again.
The energy that pulsates from Mr. Neil Young is that of a young Rocker, taking the stage for the first time. Impressive! He infects everyone on stage! This is the true spirit of Rock.
Wow. All these years I thought Neil was trying to intimidate other musicians he played with on stage, but now I see that he was challenging them to their best performance. ...whoa dude.
Most artists simply respect other artists when you get to this level of mastery because visual artists AND elite athletes know that there is no substitute for sweat equity and putting in the 10,000 hrs min for mastery. (10-15 yrs of training-just training-it's not what this generation wants to hear.) There are no shortcuts and no brush that will magically help you compose a still life. And at the end of this performance there will be no oil painting that can capture this fleeting moment in time. I think music captures life a little differently every time you hear a great classic. Such an ephemeral experience-12:34 mins in length of an epiphany! Cheers, from Toronto Stay safe and SANE America ☮
Above I commented that I think he missed a couple chances to do some improvisational drum soloing, when Neil gave him a chance, TWICE, but yes, you are correct, that it was a feat of endurance to drum like that for so long. Major props to him.
O.K. . I cannot keep quiet any longer. I was born in 1950 and after seeing Paul McCartney on bass on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 . well I've been playing ever since and still am. You young players ---- listen to those who have traveled your path before you --- but always listen to your heart --- rock and roll will never die.
+Steve Hilliard I was born in 51 so you got me by a year. I just wished Neil would just finish a song! His false stops get boring after 3 or 4 times that you think it's over....
+rockinran This is not a song, this is music and real music has no beginning or end. It's the sound of creation that filled the void before the dawn of time and will still sound when all else has faded into nothing.
When musicians keep ending a song like that it's because they are stoked and feel so much crowd energy that it's a lot like the end finale of a fireworks show.
I just can't say how exuberant this is!!! Watching Neil take over, how gracefully Eddie just grooves with it - and how Neil just KICKS ASS. Love you NEIL, Love you EDDIE!!
This is an incredible video. First off, whomever edited this, thank you. The visuals are insane. The cuts from the different perspectives is perfectly put together. The audio quality is fantastic as well. There is a reason this has so many views. Great job!
Just stumbled upon this by mistake and boy am I glad I did, Pearl Jams rendition was outstanding to begin with then Neil Youngs appearance just raised it to a whole new level, I’d love to have been at this gig...kudos Canada, you Rock!
I love that moment at 4:04 when Eddie is just overwhelmed by the atmosphere of the whole song and by the fact he is playing with Neil fucking Young on one stage.
Pure joy on stage! You can feel the hapiness of each musician...and that is one of my favourites rock song ever! with the appearance of Neil ( the great one), this jam is a real pearl!
Neil Young has literally been playing professionally as long as I have been alive! An amazing musician and force of nature that is still relevant in 2020! Eddie Vedder is incredible as always!
But you get it? Right. So anyone who disagrees is wrong, si that it? I don't know whether to laugh or cry at that sort of megalomania and self-entitlement. Either way you're a terrible person.
was lucky to be there. had a great seat for this. was also in toledo for the vfc tour where ed didn't seem into it and neil played with pj for 45 mins. pure magic.
He went to the bass player right away. Because that is what you wold do in order to get your sea legs. Then you get in the groove and you play with the band.
Just found this. Major respect to Mike McCready for giving up his guitar to Neil Young! Although I can't quite believe Pearl didn't have a spare radio jack for Mike. It is so good to see this ace band pay so much respect to their heritage.
He's got something for everybody. U like country? Neil's got u. U like blues? Neil can do it. U like nasty garage rock? Smell the Horse! If ur like me and like em all he's one of ur favorite artists
To have been there was truly indescribable. I've seen over 50 concerts in that venue, it was the only one where the ground was physically shaking. When Uncle Neil walked up those steps I thought the roof was gonna cave in!
I was there. First time I've ever could say that on RU-vid, feels good. I can see why people have to post that comment now. Stupid COVID cancled the 2020 PJ Tour, but they will honour our tickets. Stay rock'n everyone!
