Peavey 6505 MH (Mini Head, HUGE Tones?)
What does the mini 6505 sound like? Can it deliver despite its small size? It's a 20 watt all valve/tube guitar amp with two channels.
The Peavey 6505 (the follow up to the 5150) has been around for ages. Originally designed by Eddie Van Halen, the name was changed from 5150 to 6505 when EVH and Peavey parted company. Today I try out the mini version of this guitar amp. Does it deliver big tones, despite the small size?

After EVH and Peavey parted ways in 2005, Peavey renamed the amp to 6505. 65 for 1965 the year Peavey started and 05 for 2005, the 40th anniversary of Peavey

Hi there! Can you share your experience from rehearsals/gigs with this amp? Is it loud enough without having to use to much pre amp gain to help with the overall volume output?

@@gabriel_santana_86 Hi man! I have played with 6505MH mostly at home (I use it mainly for recording with 2x12 cabinet). With 4x12 cab I have tried it in several rehearsals and it has been loud enough in 20W mode. All the gigs I have played in last 15 years I have had my cabinet miked so I believe I don't have "correct" answer for this. Smaller venues I think it does just fine without miking it up. If you are looking for an amp for loud rehearsing with band and gigging, I would consider the actual 120W 6505 head. You wouldn't have to swap tubes too often for head. I think that the 6505 can modified from 120W to 60W, at least my 5150 is running 60W - this can be done by removing two power amp tubes.

Yep, it's very good. To chime into the discussion here, another option would be the 50 watt 5150. I haven't tried it, but that would certainly be loud enough I'd imagine.

@@MrPolevaulter I haven't tried the 50W version myself either, but most likely that would be loud enough. At least my 50W Randall head is loud enough, even with 2x12 cab.

@@MrPolevaulter my 6505mh has developed a loud, super annoying intermittent hum (even without a guitar plugged in) the tubes are fine and it’s meaning me nuts ‘cause it Is not reliable. HELP!!!!!!

God bless EVH but thank you for not demoing this as solely a Van Halen player clone like almost everyone else does. I especially liked the early clean/bluesy tones. Most people tend to skip that channel. We all know it's a gain monster.

You may not believe it but back in the 80’s I was in a bar band, as we say in the US. But Peavey used to make 112 solid state amps that when brought through the PA, speakers . Those solid state tones were incredibly insane good. A single Bandit 65 watt solid state amp.

Sounds great bro, I have tried it and found it a little dark for my liking, but it sounds great! That Input jack is a pisser, but other than that it is almost comparable to one of your Marshall’s!!!!

I thought it sounds great. I think the 50 watt version of there is one would be even better. You're playing makes it sound good of course. The 5150 is a great amp and these have great features. I had a USA peavey classic 30 watt blues amp I loved, which was stolen sadly along with an Ibansz RG 550 with maple neck. 😥 It was a great amp too. Especially with an overdrive like the SD1 or a ratt pedal, etc, since it didn't have a ton of gain, but man did it sound great cranked. Anyway I think this amo sounds great, has great features, and sounds good for the price, but I would worry about it breaking down if I gigged it often, and I would for sure take a back up. Modeler or something.. Thanks for doing this review kind sir, and thanks for breaking out that Ibansez. Love it man!! Hope all are well and safe there !

@@MrPolevaulter Looking forward to this one. DSL1C could be a cheap amp killer, you get classic Marshall tones, a foot switch, reverb, 8" okay speaker for practice, 2 channels and an effects loop. Plug into your 4x12 stack and get ready for action! And nearly maintenance free because those valves will last years and years. Hurry up please.

It's a stacked single coil pickup set. So it's virtually a humbucker

Hi Elmo! Thanks for reviewing this. Been looking for a small format tube head but the ones I've found so far have been too expensive (like the Victory heads e.g). I have a question regarding headroom. Would you say that if you hooked this up to a 4x12 Marshall cab, the headroom would be enough for band practice next to a hard hitting drummer or not? Obviously with lots of gain on the amp it would be loud enough, but what if you wanted to use it as a pedal platform using the clean channel just before broken clean? It would be more versatile if it could work as a pedal platform amp as well as using the internal distortion. As usual, your chops are on fire. :-) Cheers!

Thought about a topic for another video I'd like to see you do. Palmer makes a closed back 212 Greenback cab that retails for just under 3700 SEK (link: www.thomann.de/se/palmer_cab_212_gbk.htm). The sound you always have in your videos are through Marshall cabs. It would be informative to have you compare the Palmer cab with your Marshall cabs. Maybe they are both cheap and good (or just cheap). :-) Cheers!

@@DrugMeToHell1 Hi, and thanks for the response. No, I've not made friends with Orange amps yet. Tried 100W-heads from Orange, but there's something about the tone in all Orange amps that doesn't sit well with me. What's your experience with these lunchbox heads? Cheers from Sweden! :-)

Hi Gabriel, I'm a bit unsure if it has the headroom. I would say probably. The good thing with Thomann is that you can try out the thing, and if it doesn't work, you can send it back. I might check out the Palmer. Thanks for the tip. And yeah, Orange amps have a very particular sound.

I have this amp with a Marshall 2x12 and I recently acquired a broken down 1968 fender vibrochamp so it’s being refurbished I’m gonna use my fender amp as a clean amp with a aby and then the peavey 6505 mh as my dirty amp you think that would be kool or no?

Love that amp. It just rules! And the features are just awesome! But it needs a gate, even with a ok cable. It would be nice if you do another video of that in 4CM, for instance with the Pod Go! ...all the beer from Portugal 🍺🤘

Sounds fantastic. Very good demo. Thank you! 2 Channels and lots of added perks. My question is reliability. I have had my ear on a Friedman Pink Taco for a while. A lot more expensive and very basic. From what I have listened to, the sound of the PT is the best I have herd. The reliability and sound on it seem to be top of the line. A fork in the road. Witch path to take? I do not have a lot of cash so this is a heavy weight decision. Leaning towards the PT....OUCH the cash sacrifice.

I bought this amp 2 weeks ago. WOW what an amp! Only when I play it on 20 watts do the TI-LED also play on red! Will change the EL 84 tubes and see what happens then! It's just a shame that the 120 watt 6505 has no reverb! That makes the MH more interesting.

Got same 6505 head but I use a Roland 1x8” cab .. works great , But .. that 1x12 surely sounds bigger & fuller than my 8” cab on my tv sound bar , maybe I’ll get one as well. Good video btw .. … this amp is so clean it will clean your teeth 🦷 s for you.

Just got mine today ...can NOT get a clean sound. sucks. - and can NOT get the footswicth to switch channels. seems like it esnt even working. I plugged it into the Channel input in the rear , the upper input.

Blimey , I liked this a lot which is very dangerous because I have no room for a head and cab :). Pity about the faulty jack but hey that's life and has happened many a time in the past on much more expensive equipment ( I take it it was the jack and not the lead ?). I hope your soldering skills are better than mine or it's burnt fingers all round :) .

There are 3 different evh lunchbox heads. The 3rd one is coming out in the next few weeks. They are called evh lbx. I've had the 2nd version one its killer! Tons of gain on tap, but the clean channel isn't the best. Overall though fantastic amp and priced great too.

Sorry for all the questions but I've been looking for a good amp that has a 1 watt mode and can go louder for a long time. Obviously the amp being able to get the EVH brown sound is a big attraction.

@@justice100forwin2 the original had 2 distortion channels only. The blue and red of the 5150. No clean. The lbx ii had a clean and distortion channel and the blue channel. The lbx iii has a clean and the red channel so its higher gain. Theres a demo by riff beards and gear on it that just came out. They have effects loops. They can be run at full 15watts or 3watts. Still pretty loud at 3watts though

I was considering this amp but heard it can't really do clean! I am not hearing this to be honest! I hear it sounds just fine! How does it take pedals? P.S : I ended up buying a used Peavey ValveKing MH 20 at a very good price, but I think that would have maybe been a better purchase :P

I have an original 5150 head and a Valveking combo... Both are amazing and versatile with unique voices that are quite impressive and useful. Both take pedals beautifully and offer plenty of headroom and power to spare. This head is quite interesting for the direct recording capabilities, as well as the brilliant tones that allow the character of each Guitar to shape the music being played.

I just watch this and I'm not sure how to feel about your demo. It just didn't put this little beast in its proper perspective. This is a killer metal amp and that's really its purpose in life. I use it with a Sonic Stomp as a boost and can tweak the hell out of it. I use this amp more then my FireBall. I'm listing on a good EV PA system and the sound quality just didn't do it justas.
