These amps sound killer! The distortion sounds sweet to me, it may not give a heavily scooped metal tone , but there's just something about the first valvekings which makes it sound raw & dirty more marshally than the new ones. Perfect stoner rock amp.

1rst input is the normal or "Higain" input, the 2nd input is the "low gain"input what that does is attenuates the signal like -6 or -8bd

I have one of these and have the AB voicing knob (which is pretty much an attenuate knob set at about 9 or 10 o'clock and get very nice tones. You can also get better dirty tones because you can turn the volume up (post gain ) and turn the distortion down a little . I am a working musician and that ab setting was perfect for bar / club gigs ...

that's how good demo should be done. thank you. :)

The 2 inputs are for different types of guitars. I may be wrong but I believe input 1 is for hot guitars and input 2 is more for guitars with a lower or quieter signal

Picking one up for £150 next week. Don,t really play any metal with bands I'm in. Sounds pretty good to me

just so you know what its all about...two inputs on a guitar amp usually points to one being what they call "high gain" and one called " low gain". the significance is that high gain usually lets all your signal thru and the low gain will cut the over all signal by 15 decibels or something like that with the idea being it will drive the amp a little less and give you a little more headroom. Sometimes on these kinds of amps the break up a bit too early and this second input can help control that a bit. i just read the manual real quick.....on this model its a little bit different than you normally see. Pasted from the manual: HIGH GAIN INPUT Used for most electric guitars. It is 10 dB louder than Low Gain input. LOW GAIN INPUT Provided for instruments that have extremely high outputs, which can result in overdriving (distorting) the High Gain input. If both inputs are used simultaneously, the levels are the same (both are Low Gain).

Traditionally the HI-Gain input on an amp is used for HIGH IMPEDANCE - lOW LEVEL signals ie PASSIVE pickups whereas the LO-Gain input is used for LOW-IMPEDANCE HIGH-LEVELsignals ie ACTIVE pickups! Learning the difference between the two and adjusting your signal to noise ratio after it including the pedals that go BEFORE the preamp and BEFORE the fx-loop including an eventual noise gate pedal is molto importante!,- if the pedals aren´t buffered! Buffering the pedals preserves signal integrity even if it´s a passive pickup it just doesn´t boost it,- for that you would need a seperate boost pedal that CHANGES the impedance from high to low and raises the signal level from low to high! Thru-bypass in pedals means the signal is let through unaltered when the pedal isn´t engaged ie high impedance-low level if it´s a passive pickup like a strat. Misunderstanding this will result in a flawed signal line going into the preamp and ruin your tone with white noise from your guitar´s pickups, your pedals and your cables before you even hit the preamp! MOLTO IMPORTANTE!!!!!!!!! STUDY! LEARN! GET IT RIGHT!!!

It would seem that the vk is maybe the most versatile amp around. Able to do that alt clean and clean blues up to heavy metal.

I liked the overdrive sound when you had the crunch sound (not so much with the higher gain). If I got one I'd use it for clean on ch1 and breaking on ch2 with a tube screamer for heavier tones. Does it have a more drive type button on ch2 - and do you agree with one of the comments that its better than the mark 2 combo. Be interesting to see what it;s like with a 2 x12 ext cab added

Since they didn't answer I'll try to answer. The drive channel has a boost option so you could get 3 channel versatility out of this amp. And yes the old one is better than the mk2 because of the real spring reverb on the older one compared to the crap digital reverb on the newer ones. And yes it's very tube screamer friendly and the amp can push 2 Marshall 412 cabs or just use the built in speakers and one extra 412 cab to get more stage volume 😉Hope this helps.

I think you guys need different tubes or just a different Valveking...I've heard these amps sound much better in the distortion realm than I heard here. The Valveking amp head I tried in the shop recently had a roaring drive tone that was decent for metal...not as saturated as the VK2 or the 6505+ but a good ballsy drive tone.

It's the texture and dampening controls...if they aren't set properly then the amp can sound very different

Just picked one of these up earlier today, and I got great distorted overdrive. Did you maybe miss the boost gain and volume buttons? Those help immensely! I have yet to fine tune the A-AB knob, but I'm quite happy with it. I bought it because I played through the VK100 head version a few years back and was impressed and am far from disappointed.

Thanks for the comment. I'm just not keen on it. The clean channel is great, you can dial in some Fender like tones that sound amazing with a Strat. But that overdrive channel is just garbage in my opinion.

@@TheToneShed you are not doing it RIGHT ! THAT amp is capable of Metallica vintage tone right out the box, but maybe you need humbuckers !?!?

@@auntjenifer7774 The volume is on "1" and the gain on "11". Mine starts to "sing" with the gain half way and the volume around 5-7. Those 6L6s really do not like the volume at 1. Especially if the texture is set to "full power"

This is a blues, rock and hard rock amp. I would not play any metal. However, it can do anything else. BUt just because it is black, dudes always try to play metal on that thing. WTF?

these guys need their ears checked. sounds 10 times better than any fender or marshall amp in the same price range. problem with these amps is the cheaper parts that are used to build them

They really didn't know what they were doing, turn a bunch of knobs, and see what happens? They didn't try the A A/B knobs, and no boost gain. Pretty lazy and amateurish review.
