Matthew Johnson was experimenting with pedal drive for boats well before the first Race To Alaska, R2AK, in 2015.
This interview is the first in a series in which I speak with and learn from the pioneers using pedal drive to propel their boats, sometimes in challenging conditions and for long distances.
The Northwest Maritime Center adventure races The R2AK, The Seventy48, and The WA360 have brought to prominence the utility of pedal drive for a variety of boats, strictly pedal driven and as alternative and supplementary propulsion for sailboats.
Matthew is one of the few people who chooses to go recreating with his pedal drive boat. He is one pioneer opening the door for more people to do so. In these times of heighten awareness of the environment, it is useful to know there are compelling options to get around on the water without fossil fuel combustion.
My intention is to get multiple perspectives on pedal drives for boats and to share these perspectives broadly all while I get to learn about them and these pioneers, too.
Thanks for joining us.
